(CBS)  The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) is seeking a court order to force a Mississippi high school to hold its senior prom. On Wednesday, school officials cancelled the event after a female student asked to bring her girlfriend and wear a tuxedo.

CBS News correspondent Mark Strassmann reports that, in Fulton, Miss., charges of discrimination and violation of a teenager's rights have derailed the prom plans.

Senior Constance McMillen, 18, was ready for the prom. She even had a date. But the problem at Itawamba County Agricultural High School, says Strassmann, was her sophomore -- girlfriend.

FULTON, Miss. – The Constance McMillen story has gone viral.

The teenage lesbian who just wanted to bring her girlfriend to her prom is now the poster child around the world for gay rights.

Since the story broke this week that school officials at Itawamba Agricultural High School have canceled prom for all students rather than allow Constance to bring her same-sex date, the American Civil Liberties Union has sued the school district and the outrage has gone global.

Constance has been friended this week on Facebook by 100,000 strangers who support her cause. And the number keeps growing by the hour.

ITAWAMBA COUNTY, MS (WLBT) - The offers are pouring in to help a North Mississippi School have a prom after theirs was canceled.

Constance McMillen, a senior at Itawamba Agricultural High School in Fulton, wanted to take her girlfriend to the prom. The district denied the request, then decided to cancel the prom altogether, saying it would be a distraction.

The Mississippi Safe Schools Coalition says it is leading efforts to organize a prom for all students  and a hotel owner in New Orleans has offered to hold an alternate senior prom. He says he'll provide transportation and hotel accommodations.

I really feel for the poor kid.
All she wanted to do was have a good time like all the other students.
Did anyone think to ask what they  thought about the situation, seeing they probably all knew about her orientation?
