Title: Hormones and Lactating??? Or wtf was that?
Post by: DaddyofGrrrl on March 25, 2010, 01:34:05 PM
Sorry if this sounds like I'm upset, cause I'm not. Just very curious! And intrigued. And I have to admit a little squicked. My partner is transitioning and has only been on hormones 5 weeks. We've already started to notice some breast development which is awesome for her and last night for the first time there was a clear fluid coming out from her nipples when she pinched one.  I told her to stop cause we didn't know what it was and I thought it actually might be in there for a reason and shouldn't be squeezed out.

Anyone else have this happen?

I have been on HRT for close to a year and never noticed that. Is she taking progesterone?

Nope, she wishes she were but as of now only estrogen (estradiol, right?) and spiro (anti androgen.)

Should we be concerned?

get prolactin levels checked, should be nothing to worry about, but as a just in case there is pituitary problems.

My breasts have the same discharge. I am just 5 months into HRT. It started around the second month I guess.
I was worried for a little bit then I talked to the women in my family and it turns out that over half of my natal female family members have always had some level of continuous or spontanious lactation. My cousin has been lactating since her first child 10 years ago and my sister tells me she has had leaky boobs since she started puberty. My mother can not be in a place with an infant for longer than 3 days or she will go into complete production mode.
It seems to come and go, with me. When it happens I find that I get very giddy and excited. Sorta like see see they are boobs, only boobs make milk.
It is not as uncomon as I thought at first.
Maybe getting prolactin levels checked is a good plan but I wouldn't worry.
Boobs make milk some just do it at the drop of a hat.

Thanks, I'll recommend she gets checked. But to be clear, it's not milk, but a clear, thin discharge. Is yours the same? Or is that what breastmilk looks like? I have no clue. Got the dang boobies and don't want 'em.

It will be because her prolactin levels are high. Worth getting a check up I think.

Breast milk is white but you get different kinds of milk, like the thinner fore milk, and thicker creamier hind milk. Plus in the beginning it could be like colostrum which is a clear color. Keep in mind she probably does not have a lot in the way of milk producing glands yet anyway, but still able to produce some goodies, like a componant of milk.

Did you know milk is a blood product? Weird.

Thanks for the info.

And yep, I did know that! Used to do HIV prevention education in high school and the fluids you have to worry about are of course, "blood, semen, vaginal secretions, breastmilk."

My discharge is clear like clostrum. Not very much of it either.

Then that sounds exactly the same. Thanks.
