Well, it seems to me we have quite a few gamers 'round this place, and of course I couldn't resist putting up a 'battle of the consoles' poll. ;)
Added the most recent ones from the 6th generation and added an 'other' option for older ones or some I might have missed.
So, bring it on; what's your favourite thing to game on? 8)
My personal favourite is the PC; mmorpg history and all-that and my hand is on auto-wasd by now. However, I also own a PS3, nice for dvd's/blu-ray's and the occasional exclusive title, also prefer playing sports games on a console for some reason...
my heart says PC but the ps3 is winning me over (cost to gaming ratio as well as the controller, keyboard/mouse may be precise for fps games, but the gyro in the ps3 controller has potential)
Steam4Life
Besides, you can't mod for games on a console ;)
PC only!
PS3! I've loved Sony Playstations since PS1.
Xbox 360 is great too, though.
Due to the ability to constantly upgrade components, the PC will kick the crap out of any console. Once a console is released, the hardware becomes static and is only 'upgraded' when you buy a new unit - which you have to wait for the manufacturers to produce (anyone else remember the wait for the N64?)
My current PC is far more powerful than my PS3 - and console games suffer from being 'dumbed down' to work on them. Farcry, for example, had killer AI on the PC, but on the consoles the AI couldn't figure its elbow from it's ->-bleeped-<-.
In general I lean towards PC, but certain games with amazing graphics (cough, FFXIII, cough) look
incredible on my PS3/TV. I'm going to have to get off my butt and hook the TV up as a monitor for Starcraft 2. *melts*

That's a given, but upgrading a PC tends to be quite a bit more expensive too.

About the same, actually, considering that the brand new consoles are so expensive. My last four PC upgrades have only involved the graphics card, which are much cheaper than a full PS3 unit.

Agreed. FFXIII on a large, full-hd tele... I nearly humped it. 8)
I am another "Other". I have an Xbox, that I played and I like PC games.
The PC, Even though I use Linux, a combination of Wine and console emulation does a bit more for me then my X-box 360, Wii or PS2 does.
I do want to get FF XIII for my 360 and Dynasty Warriors Gundam 2 (I know it came out in 2008, but I don't play games that often to justify the purchase) for the 360 as well. For the PC I might start playing Eve Online again, but otherwise I suppose I am looking forward more to console titles.
I like Xbox 360 for the multiplayer (call me crazy, but I find even the ->-bleeped-<-s on Xbox Live kind of funny). Sadly the fan recently died on my 360 after a good 3 1/2 years without problems. I'm debating if it might just be cheaper to buy a new one with a better HDD rather than try to get the old one fixed.
But I still get some games for PC if they're not really multiplayer-centric.
I sadly cannot afford a gaming console for myself right now. I have an old Gamecube that I'll drag out from time to time so my niece and nephew can play some Zelda, Metroid, or Spongebob (I got this game specifically for them). I started playing Assassins Creed on my brothers 360 but it got the RROD and he sent it back in for repair :-\
It should be back next week! We also have a new 1080p LCD television now so I'm really really hoping to get some Final Fantasy going real soon! I've played a couple of them and was hooked! :)
I will always love the classics. Atari, Ninetendo, Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis.... 8)
I love my wii, its great fun, a family console where my 3 year old god son can beat me in almost everything..... LOL
Lately I've been playing the 360 since it's my newest console. And SoulSilver/Diamond (DS.)
The 360 would be great if it didn't malfunction all the damn time.
Super Nintendo Entertainment System
Say what you will about the PC and its ability to do anything and everything. But the fact remains that the SNES had the best linup of games ever made.
LONG LIVE METROID 3
my trust ps2 and sega genesis
A table and a deck of cards, or a pool table. Both can be played with other people, and frequently with people who will give you money for playing well. Winning money - cold, hard cash - beats 'welcome to the next level' every time.
I voted PS3 because I like to think about the present, but I have to say that the SNES is the greatest of all time.

How is it that you can be so cynical and so right as often as you are? Board games aren't bad either. My kids called monopoly family game.
I've always loved Nintendo, so I had to vote Wii. I love it! Bring on the Zelda, Mario and Metriod!! Although these days, it's all about Guitar Hero. :D
Actually yeah, Tekla. I play lots of video games, I've always had the odd poker game, and sometimes if I feel like spending eight hours and losing friends, I'll play a board game.
Risk is always a great time. Sure, I'm terrible and make the worst strategic decisions of all time, but still.
Most people are going new, new, new!
While the moniority is claiming the REAL consoles. NES, SNES, N64, Gameboy, Gameboy Color, Sega Genesis, etc. These are naming the few that I truly adore, but there are many other systems out there to be recognized pre-2000.
So I chose "Other" to represent that.
I feel like I'm turning into James with my adoration of the Nintendo lineage. :P :D

Risk is always a great time.
Haha, yeah. It's fun. But I've never finished a game of Risk.
The last game I played, it was a power struggle between me and my friend, with my brother very quickly dying, and my girlfriend doing suspiciously nothing. I had an alliance with my friend, but my girlfriend convinced me that I had the strength to take him out, and I really wanted North America. While we waged a war of attrition with rapidly dwindling forces, my girlfriend came out of New Zealand, where she had been amassing bonuses for having all of Oceania and swept the board clean.
I found out after the game that she played Risk all the time and was an absolute pro.
I voted other, as a child of the 1980's I was brought up on the Commodore Amiga. Still have every one of them I ever had apart from the A600 which broke.
Got: A1200, A1500, A2000HD, A2500, A4000 EC/030. Could sell them for a mint but they mean more to me to keep em, plus I love the classics like Zool, Dennis, Team Yankee, Desert Strike etc
Although I do also have: PS1 (2 of), PS2 (2 of), PS3 (2 of, one 80GB and one 250GB slim), PSP3000 (2 of). The PS3 is a very good games console but I don't play it as much as I played my PS1, I use the PS3's mainly for blu-ray and for Playstation Home, it's like a virtual world and you can make a 3D version of yourself, mine is very much a woman and has BRIGHT red hair xD
My god you have a lot of systems.....
Oooh I was thinking only of current consoles when I answered. My favorite will always be SNES because of all the great RPGs back then. 7th Saga, Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana, Earthbound, Final Fantasy 4/6 (2/3 USA), Breath of Fire 1/2, and more. I keep an emulator on my PC to play them when I'm feeling nostalgic.
Call me odd, but I like massive pixels and sidescrollers. :P Can't be dealing with this 360-degree view!
I suppose my favourite console I've ever played on is the Sega Megadrive, then, because I'm too young to have encountered any of the proper old-school Atari or Commodore systems or whatever. Which is a shame. Maybe one day... Alexis6, can I come to your house? :D
Were stuck about 10 years the past in my house, between my PS1 and my brothers Nintendo 64. I've been playing a lot of FF8 and Crash Bandicoot lately. A PS3 is on the list of things I want as soon as I have money though, although its going to be a while.
SEGA DREAMCAST ;D
sadly due to it being 2AM and my own stupidity i clicked xbox 360 instead of 'other'.
Still i love the 360 its my 2nd favourite at least.
Megaman 8 bit represent.
Well, I had an N64 (Great console back in the day!), but I had to sell it, so meh. I have a PS2 and my gaming rig.
Definitely I <3 PC gaming, but the problem us PC gamers are facing right now is that most of the released games are just console ports that don't even have the quality a PC game deserves (e.g. Grand Theft Auto 4, NFS Shift, NFS Undercover, etc.) or the developers add too much DRM, therefore, turning something we enjoy, into a nightmare (Like Ubisoft and their latest online-based DRM system in Assassin's Creed II) so the main problem with PC gaming is, that we're spending just too much on our rigs, and we're getting the same gaming experience as a console gamer, which means that we'd be better if we only played in consoles like the Xbox 360.
I don't know, maybe with my transition I'll have to say goodbye to PC gaming and focus on other things so w/e. However, I can't deny that I love videogames so, maybe when I'm done with this I'll build a new high end computer :P
Bah so many mods are reaching the same levels of game play and visuals of full retail games, Black Mesa Source, Lost Hope, and Raindrop on the Source engine alone, not counting all the Cry2, unity and UDK mods. That alone makes the PC worth it I think. Then you have GOOD games being put out by studios like Valve, Bioware, Blizzard and smaller places like Telltale Games (Sam & Max) Raven (Wolfenstien, Upcoming title Singularity) and many, many more.
What I complain about is, that these big developers have the money to make quality productions, that can become great games and they just don't deliver, whether it's on PC or any other platform... and it's becoming more obvious these days...
I mean, look at MW2... the storyline didn't make ANY sense at all! and Activision had billionaire sales! they didn't even add dedicated servers on PC and activision fired many of the developers of the game >.<

good luck to them...
Activision has some good lawyers... and tons of money

The law suites will fail, just pointless arm waving for investors.
The lack of dedicated servers was intentional. A deal was signed with Steam to let them host the multiplayer aspect of the game. Steam did not put in support for dedicated servers.
Yet one more reason Steam was the worst thing to ever happen to the PC.
wait... now that I think about it, isn't the multiplayer system in MW2 exactly the same as the one in Left 4 Dead? i don't know if anyone else have noticed this, but I wasn't sure until I played online with some friends last night...
PC + Emulation + Open Source + Abadonware = All you need in a console. So yes, PC.
Pee-See, although not by much choice.
It just occurred to me, I still have to finish Super Mario, the NES power thing melted at level 8-something.
Princess is in another castle... :D © ƃuıxǝʌ
My favorite console is Xbox 360, but I'd prefer PC to that any day :3
I am surprised 'Other' Is ahead in the polls right now aside from emulate 360 or ps3 games well what can't a PC do?
My PC is only of modest spec:
Phenom x3, 2gb ram, Ati Radeon hd2600 512mb, X-box 360 controller
running on Ubuntu 9.10 built from minimal (Running KDE 4.4.3 default these days) as default and occasionally Win XP x64 or 32 SP3
I can play Castlevania: SOTN (via PCSX-Reloaded), and when I tire of a platformer, I can play Chronotrigger (Zsnes) and when I need senseless button mashing, I can Dynasty Warriors 6 (Windows) and then play a bit of Crusin' USA (mupen 64) and when I bore of cars, I can fire up Dune2 (DOSemu) and play at a bit of strategy. That and when I am playing Final Fantasy VIII I can save state right in the middle of battle, no need to finish my boss fight in one sitting.
The only problem with the PC as a gaming platform is that the triggers work funny on the X-box 360 controller, who on earth decided those things would be such a bizarre axis rather than buttons really needs to be shot.
My favorites have always been the Nintendo portables (Gameboys, and now the DS), primarily because I'm a Pokemon addict, but also because I rarely play video games unless I'm bored out of my skull, and one of my most common places to play games happens to be in the car (because it's difficult to read and near impossible to draw or write while in a moving vehicle). For that matter, vacations in general are my biggest gaming-time of the year, and I can't really be bothered to lug my entire Gamecube with me on vacation. it's just not worth the trouble. x3;
...as far as non-portable consoles go, though, Gamecube is my console of choice, at least until they decide to release something noteworthily Pokemon-related for the Wii-- i.e. unless they release a sequal to Pokemon Snap or a really good 3D rpg to teh effect if XD Gale of Darkness, I'm just sticking with my good ol' Gamecube. I have Pokemon games and a representative handful of Sonic the Hedgehog for when I'm in the mood for some fast-paced stress relief. That's sufficient for my video game needs. |D
I play alot on my NDS lately, before then, I went through a PSP phase, but altogether I own TOO many consoles of different types:
Classic Gameboy
Gameboy Advance
Gameboy Advance SP [limited edition Zelda gold edition]
Nintendo DS Lite [gave my original NDS to my mum xD]
PSone
PS2
PS3
PSP
Sega Master System
Sega Mega Drive
and of course, my trusty PC. :D
Could be more, I dont remember, alot of the oldies are collecting dust, unfortunately, although, I do revisit them from time to time to keep them ticking over. xD
Definitely the Wii. I never could get past all the buttons on anything more than the original nintendo.

You sound like my dad! xD He struggles with all the buttons. xD For ages, he was only able to use a joystick for the Sega Master System xD
My favorite modern platform is the Wii. When it comes to vintage models my favorites are the Atari I had when I was a kid (playing games like Pong and Frogger), the The Sega Gensis when I was a little older especially playing Sonic the Hedgehog, Super Nintendo and being addicted to Super Mario Brothers and Legend of Zelda.

Well I really like the Sega Genesis (my first system and all), but I think PS2 takes the cake, mainly cause most of my games I have are on there.
I've been through quite a few different gaming consoles, (Playstation, Gameboy, Gameboy Advanced, Nintendo DS, Playstation 2, Xbox 360), so far my favourite is the XBox 360. It has plenty of good games, and I love it's capabilities.
PC - More versatile in every single aspect than any gaming console can dream to be.
Not to mention, I can do more than just game on it.
PC. Nowadays I pretty much only play the stuff put out by Bethesda and Bioware, and since I already have a decent computer, I don't feel any great need to buy a console. I do own a Wii, but it hasn't seen any play lately.
Of course, any game that doesn't involve pencils, paper and dice is hardly worth the name at all ;D .
As someone who knows basically everything there is to know about games, I can easily say the.. Dreamcast.
The Dreamcast was just.. So... Awesome. A lot of the good games were JPN only though
I heard that a good number of Dreamcast games are going to be rereleased on a combo disc for xbox360, and maybe another format that I can't remember at the moment...
I try to collect game consoles and the Dreamcast is on my list since it's rare and supposedly a good system. I just don't have the cash whenever I spot one of kijiji though.

What's the earliest gen gaming platform you've played on?
I choose you PS3! At least for this generation. I'm pretty much a gamer though, so if something can play games...I'm going to use it!
I mostly play on the 360, though I also have a Wii and a PC.
I'm pretty much all PC now. I still have a PS2 but I only really use it as a DVD player. I like being able to make my own characters in games instead of playing someone else's.
My PS2 is my favorite, but I also play my NES and SNES on a regular basis. Can't beat the classics
Playstation 3 because I grew up with Playstations.
I've recently become surgically attached to my iPod4, complete with a wide array of games... Like Undercroft... >_>
Currently it is the PS3 but my favorite game system is PS1. PS2 is great too. I still have one. The best handheld video game in my opinion is the GBA SP. I'm surprised the PSP wasn't even picked once. Then again I can kind of see why.
Anyways I am a Sony Man through and through
Nintendo 64, GameBoy Advance and GameCube. :D I like playing GameBoy games fullscreen on my computer! ;D
PS2, I grew up around the PS1 era so I am found of the PS2 since it's fully compatible and I just love the PS1/PS2 era RPG games. I still buy PS2 games x3 I got 3 the other day.
I can't really say I have a favourite. I've had lots of them at one time or another, but usually because of specific games. For example, I had a Gamecube primarily to play the Lost Kingdoms RPG's, a PS1 for the Final Fantasy RPG's, a PS2 for the Final Fantasy, Shadow Hearts and Shin Megami Tensei games... I even had a Dreamcast purely because of one game: The Nomad Soul (how I wish they'd make a sequel to that).
I guess the one I had the biggest library for was the PS2, purely because of the staggering number of RPG's available to it, but some of my fondest memories are of the original Playstation, and playing through games like Parasite Eve 2, Vagrant Story and Final Fantasy VII for the first time.
I still think the Dreamcast was the best they made so many unique games for that console it was ace. Which reminds me I still need to fork out for space channel 5. I want mortal kombat gold too but it's pretty expensive. *sigh*
On the other hand I'm waiting for my PS1 I just bought to be delivered and after much searching I found my Spyro and my Croc games! Hoorah! I never throw anything related to games away.
I do love my psp to death because I play persona 3 and harvest moon games on it. Plus it's really good for keeping me entertained on long trips.
I don't really like the Wii....I have it and I just think its ridiculous how well it's done when my dreamcast looks like it has better graphics not to mention the mountain of cr*p games that come with it.
It's gotta be the PS3 for me, though I do like some older consoles than what are on the list, too.
