Post by: wannalivethetruth on April 12, 2010, 06:18:20 PM
What doctor should i look for? I heard a psychiatrist? Psychologist? (SO MANY P WORDS! ???)

After that, do i call them? what do i say? If i make an appointment what should i say at the appointment, just hand him/her the letter?

if you want to be straight up, ask for transgender healthcare services (they don't need to know you have a letter of recommendation yet)

for the run around, ask for care related to hormones (or the ambiguous "meds check")

It depends on what's available to you locally, as well as the condition of your over all health. My HRT is under the care of a Family Medicine doctor who has experience with trans patients.

If you have a relationship with a general/family practice doctor already, you may want to start there, as this will be somebody who knows you and your family medical history.

But I certainly wouldn't expect anyone to argue against an endocrinologist, either, at least for periodic evaluation.

What exactly are you after at this point? Starting HRT? Something else?

I'd say ask her if she knows of any endo who will work with you. If not then perhaps the nearest support group may have an answer.

Okay, do a search for transgender health services... An endo. would be a major score

But other doctors can prescribe HRT as well... Family practitioner, Psychiatrist

It is best to go in person if possible, but you can also call and/or fax them

In the past I have self administered hormones (I know there will be many disapproving voices amongst forum members but what is a girl to do).   Several times I chickened out of contacting my GP.   Today, I finally had the strength to post a letter to my Doctor with a request to see a gender therapist.   I await their response.   I am part terrified, part highly exited.  I hope it goes as well as the other steps I have so far taken from going out in public to laser hair removal where my initial fears have been unfounded.   Wish me luck.
