I'm doing an associate's online and will transfer to another school's online program to finish my bachelor's this winter. My current school knows about the name change but I would prefer the new school doesn't know. How do I handle this with regard to the financial aid process? Being over 26, I have to deal with selective service and all that. Will my new school be privy to that info?
Have you changed your name? and will it be reflected in your school when you send transcripts and stuff?
And also, did you change your SSN card for gender? (assuming you can I forgot what state your in).
If not there might be an anomaly somewhere in the application process.
SSN is federal, state doesn't matter for that
I have seen a stealth transition in the sciences, with the professors aware and protectively silent. The arts, however, have a significantly different culture, and you would do well to protect yourself.
In the United States, the registrar and financial offices will not share your records with the professors.

whoops!
I just assumed it would be because you have to fill out SSN on your college applications and a lot of college related stuff (at least where I live)
If I understand correctly, anything on your FAFSA is information the school can have, however the administration would have it. and your professors/fellow students shouldn't know anything unless someone talks when they shouldn't.
I am no expert on this however.
