Post by: Rock_chick on April 26, 2010, 01:24:51 PM
They are fast becoming the bane of my life, because no matter how much I exfoliate i get loads...especially on my legs. does anybody have some top secret tips for dealing with the pesky blighters?

How are you removing them?  If shaving go against the grain.

epillator and waxing...tho it's mainly my bloody legs that are the problem. arms and everywhere else are ok.

Are you wearing slacks or jeans?  And what are you using to moisturize?

I usually wear skinny jeans for casual and trousers for work. moisturiser is somehing called dream cream...organic, vegan and packed with essential oils.

The reason I am asking is because if you are exfoliating on a regular basis, as the hair regrows it should not get hung up on the skin cells. The jeans might be allowing the hair to turn towards the skin as it regrows.  How often do you exfoliate?

Every day really, sometimes twice. Could well be the jeans...though a lot of the hairs aren't properly ingrown, just kind hiding under the surface. It's just annoying, tho my arms are a lot better and I've been epilating them longer...maybe it just takes time. grrrrrr

Very well could be the jeans and time.  If they are just under the skin, I have picked them out with a needle as they are generally just needing a nudge.  ;D

I shave so I don't get them, but when I waxed my arms I got them too.

It's a trial *rolls eyes* but still infinitely preferable to the monkey socks I sported until recently

I get them bad on my face and sometimes on my chest, continually amazing my electrologist when she pulls a 1.5+ inch hair from beneath my skin... >:(

I've spent way too much on Tend Skin, it doesn't work 100% to prevent them but it does work better than anything else I've tried.  It's wicked expensive though, so I wouldn't recommend buying it.  You can make your own version with almost identical active ingredients pretty easily and way cheaper, her recipe seems to work well for me:

Quote3 TBS. Witch hazel and 4 crushed tabs of uncoated aspirin
(COMBINE)

1/3 cup 70% Rubbing alcohol and 9 crushed tabs of uncoated aspirin
(COMBINE)

Combine the mixtures.
The biggest downside is probably that it smells completely horrible, but that fades not too long after you apply it.  Some of the other DIY tendskin recipes use thicker bases (jojoba oil, honey, etc) with generally the same crushed aspirin proportions or a little stronger.  I've used the jojoba base and a jojoba/honey mixture but couldn't stand either of those, but if you have really dry skin the alcohol & witch hazel (or actual tend skin) can cause problems drying you out even more.

I changed from ordinary multi-blade razors to women's razors with the soap  lubricating blocks on them.
With these and shaving in the direction of hair growth,( bit of a nuisance on the back of the leg where it grows in several directions), I have pretty much eliminated the problem.
I have used "Nair for Men" too, but you have to be careful that it doesn't burn more sensitive areas of skin, like above the collar bone.

Nair does fairly well on arms and legs tho.
