Title: Your name and why you chose it
Post by: MRH on April 27, 2010, 04:05:47 PM
I thought it would be fun if people discussed the name they chose for their prefered gender

For me its quite personal. Now, im gonna sound like a complete nutter lol. Basically I suffer from hallucinations and one of my "imagenary friends" is called Scott and ive come to realise he is everything I want to be and could be if I did transistion. He looks how I want to look, acts how I want to act and so I've decided I want that to be my name.

So please comment even if its quite a simple choice or something as wacky as mine :)

For the time being, I identify as an androgyne but I'm beginning to think that I might be more MtF.

So, I was thinking of a way to choose an androgynous name that would keep the meanings of my given names (David = beloved, William = Protector). I found many possibilities, but few I liked.

So, I began thinking of words that hold special meanings for me.

September (I was born and married in September)
Virgo (both my wife and I are Virgos, and were married during Virgo "season")
Willow, Cypress (trees near where my family had our first apartment)

My wife suggested a new first name of Dana. I then added Willow as the middle name. So, when I legally change my name (which I'll be doing in the next year or so), I will be Dana Willow M______. This way, I can keep my initials (DWM) and my email addresses, which are based on my initials.

I chose Rhiannon because, I've known a couple of Rhi's in my lifetime and both of them were upbeat, funny and sometimes downright wacky, their name fit them. I thought I represented those traits and I sorta look like a Rhiannon so I've stuck with it throughout the years.

I harvested this from an old bloger entry I made about this very subject. Moderatly edited to clarify.

My first name is Cynthia. To the distaste of some of my very close family. I find that it IS my name regardless of what I thought. Cynthia was the name I chose at about 5. This was my greatest secret. That I had a female identity. The name would leave my conscience for years then come back. Stronger each time. An aware mind can not sustain living a lie. My name is Cynthia. Cynthia was also the name of one of my first girlfriends. She was really the kind of chick I wanted to be at the time. Not the best choice of names I thought but it stuck. I looked up what Cynthia means recently and I am very pleased.....

From Wiki:

Cynthia is a feminine personal name of Greek origin: Κυνθία, Kynthía, "from Mount Cynthus" on Delos island. It can be abbreviated as Cindy.

Cynthia was originally an epithet of the Greek goddess of the moon, Artemis, who was sometimes called "Cynthia" because, according to legend, the goddess was born on Mount Cynthus.

From UrbanDictionary

Cynthia's are often shy people, but once your get to know a Cynthia they are one of the most loyal and friendly type of people you would ever be lucky enough to meet. Cynthia's love to talk but are often quiet to listen to their friend's problems. Cynthia's do not like sports, and are often too worried about life once but once you get to know a Cynthia you will see little by little that they let loose and have fun. Cynthia' s are often known by there sad looking eyes and that gloomy look on there face, often they have dark hair and a pale dead like face because they are after all named after the goddess of the moon, and like the moon you will soon see their pale beauty and mysterious personalty, know as the invisible girl, a Cynthia can be a great leader, but is always ready to be a team player

So it is my name. I like it and I also like Cindy which I readily respond to. Which is a relief as I worried I wouldn't respond to my name due to years of being conditioned to be Pete.

I'm a bit of an oddball. I chose my name a long time ago, but not because of my gender. As such, despite the fact that my name is chosen and I'm really quite happy with it, it... technically still doesn't fit my gender. x3 I identify as androgyne, yet my name is Diane. Which, when I first started figuring out the gender thing, felt kind of odd-- I had become so attached to Diane as my name, yet now here I was finding myself no longer identifying as a girl.

The solution ended up being quite simple, though, after I settled down and reaccquainted myself with my identity: Instead of making my name fit society's conception of gender, I rearranged my own concerptions of names and genders to encompass who I clearly feel I am. If I want Diane to be androgynous, the gosh darn it, it IS androgynous. (Heck, I think if I identified as a guy, I would still hang onto my silly name.)

I could come up with some brilliant tale of how I chose my name and how it fits me as an androgyne and all that, but I'd just be making things up. The name "Diane" latched onto me during a roleplaying game with my brother in 6th grade-- heaven only knows how it, of all names, stuck. More or less, I created a character named Diane who, in all my 10-year-old ingenuity, I forgot to gave a personality, so she just became me over time. I'm an androgyne running around with a clearly female name that was derived from a preteen roleplaying faux pas... and I really wouldn't have it any other way.

(I alternatively go by Crow, which is more recently added and definitely androgynous. However, the only people who really seem to call me crow are my students/kids I work with. Most of the rest of the world seems to call me Diane or some derivative thereof. Really, either is fine by me. As long as people don't call me by my birth-name, I'm happy as a clam.)

Mine is very boring. When I was about 5 I started exhibiting strong cross gender behaviour and my mother helpfully feminised my male names on the basis that if I was out with her in public wearing a frock she didn't want to be calling out "James come here" - so she suggested Jaimie - which I hated - and eventually we compromised on Jenny after my second cousin.

So James Patrick Henry became Jenny Patricia Harriet for at least part of the time.

Niether my mother nor I liked Henrietta so I became Harriet.

So Jenny Patricia Harriet - I have been officially since the early 1980's but unofficially since about 1965, and in view of my ongoing transition my schools helpfully issued all my exam certificates in intials and surname form so I have never had to get them altered either.

I now uderstand that some people change their first and indeed last names to emphasise a break with a painful past. But mine was actually mostly pretty wonderful. So I positively wanted continuity as I had an exceptionally happy childhood.

Well despite being named James...i've always been known as Jamie (apart from about 6 years at secondry school where I was James...then Jack...then Jez). Despite Jamie being feminine the problem for me is that it's my boy name...I'd just confuse myself and everyone else. I know the name i;d have been given if i'd been born as I should have been, and that was Arwen Eleanor. However no matter how I tried it I couldn't think of it as my name. In the end the decision was made for me, when Heidi and Marianne (two of my house mates) told me that they thought I looked like a Helen. after a bit of thought and tweaking things slightly, I decided I liked Helen, tho I was going to do things my way and be called Helena as it had a small nod towards Eleanor. I'm using Jamie as my middle name as that gives me a link with who I've always been...if that makes sense.

I chose Elena, derived from Helena, due to its connection to greek mitology (Which I've always liked).
It' s the name of Helen of Troy, who in mitology; was the most femenine and beautiful woman in ancient Greece.

I've had Strife as a surname for years, I never liked my original surname and I'm a big nerd and wanted to rob a video characters name :P

Nick came about by complete accident, my sister mistakenly called me it one day out of the blue and we were both like "wow that just seems to fit" - and it's stuck since.

Adan was originally a roleplaying character of mine. He was for a long time the only way I had of being me and while I was being home schooled in high school the only thing that kept me sane. Even though I was still stuck in the house all day with my erm 'lovely' family when I was roleplaying as Adan I could be anywhere and I could be me, so it was a name I became attached to. I haven't totally decided on a middle name yet but I'm thinking of using my father's name Michael so when I do finally get my name changed Tara Ann Kelley (Insert equally as silly sounding last name here) will be something along the lines of Adan Michael (insert silly sounding last name again.) This is assuming of course my dad doesn't freak when he finds out I'm trans and try to disown me like some other members of my family.  I don't think he will, but I'm paranoid.

My partner, who was instrumental in finally helping me to come out, began calling me by this name before I even began my transition, and it just sort of stuck. When I legally changed my name, I feminized my old first name to become my middle name, and I took my partner's last name. To me, that means I was named by and for someone who loved me enough to see how much I was hurting and set me on the path that has led me to where I am now.

I am one of those that Jenny mentioned who changed all my names to make a clean break from a very troubled and abusive childhood. It's been a long road and I'm proud of who I have become, and of my new name that symbolizes all those things to me.

Well, I'm a long way off from being able to change my name, but I thought I'd add my thoughts.

Right now I'm thinking I like the name Will, although William doesn't really suit me. I like Will because it gives me the idea of 'the will to live'. Lately I've been realizing just how much will power I have to get through all this crap, and I thought the name would be an appropriate choice. Of course, I'm really indecisive, so who knows what my name will end up being!

My birth name is Sebastian, so I feminized it into Sebastina, but I figured I could just shorten it into Tina, and that's how I came to the name Tina. :) At the moment I am unsure if I want my name legally changed to Sebastina and have Tina as a nickname or to legally change it to Tina.

I always wanted to be called Adam, but I wasn't out to my parents and really badly needed to change my birth name because I hated it. I was (and still am) way too scared to come out to my parents so decided it would be best to pick a gender neutral name as I would be able to change it there and then. That's why I chose Addison, it means 'son of Adam', so it is originally a boys name anyway but because of recent 'trends' it's a girls name as well, so I got away with that haha.

In my teens I would sometimes (jokingly (?)) feminize my male name by adding an A at the end, but when I was writing my application to the local trans group, I got a bit stuck when I came to the box labeled "Preferred name".
I thought about it for a while and found that Emma sounded like the kind of person I felt like. To me it sounds like an uncomplicated person. I didn't go to school with any Emmas, but looking at those around five years younger than me, Emma is a more common name. And why not pretend I'm a few years younger?  ;)

(Someone once thought I was younger than my sister, who is four years younger than me) :)

My boy name is not able to be feminized at all. :( So I decided when I started picking my girl name that I would keep my initials, but go with something that likewise couldn't be masculinized (is that even a word? :P). I narrowed it down to a few names that started with J and, well... I think it's obvious which one I picked! :D I've been Jasmine for years now, I couldn't imagine being anything but!

My 6 year old niece had an imaginary playmate she called Bombi. One day I told her about my old imaginary friend named Freddie and my experiences with him. She was quiet for a while and then said that I looked like her friend, Bombi. I asked her how. She said that sometimes Bombi looked like a girl and sometimes a girl, like you. My SO overheard the conversation and started calling me Bombi and it stuck.
What was funny was I was working in Puerto Rico a few years later in a factory working at health and safety and had a lot of interaction with the fire dept. (bombaderos) (sp) and I constantly mispronounced it (bad Spanish with a Boston accent) as Bombideros. My co-workers started calling me Bombi behind my back. It slipped out one day and the woman was embarrassed so I told her it was fine no offense taken. It spread amoungst my family and became used a lot.
I moved here and just told people my name is Bombi. Everyone here has a nickname in the VI. It's kind of a sign of acceptance in this afro-caribbean culture.

I tried to figure out a name that was similar to my birth-name, but all I could come up with from Miranda was Randy, and I'm not a Randy.  Then I decided to try my middle name, Kate, instead. I started looking through baby name books and found Kyle. Its still 1 syllable, 4 letters, starts with K, ends with E, and it kinda stuck.  My mom told me that my name would have been Lawrence If I was a born a boy, so I took that as my middle name.

bonus points to anyone who can figure out the literary/ theatre connection to Miranda Kate.

My dad called me 'Timothy' or 'Tiger Tim' as a nickname when i was little and i always really liked it. However in my head i always called myself 'Tom' after Tom and Jerry (i was 5 lol). Later i learned my great grandad was called Thomas so i chose that.

My dad also mentioned he liked the name Ethan. I like it too so i took both of them.

Thomas Ethan...Tom for short.

At first it was Liam, but I disliked that "am" sound at the end. I switched to Rowan before anyone got a chance to get Liam into their minds correctly, so that was nice. Though I was LaaaaaaRowan for a few months. (Birth name Laura) It was sweet that everyone was trying so hard. That they would catch themselves mid thought and then blurt out the right name.

I don't know how Rowan got into my head even. Just standing in the bathroom one day after deciding Liam didn't sound right. I said Rowan at myself out of the blue and there it was. Of course other people were wishy washy, so I made lists and had a couple online polls just to poke at it. Despite everyone saying they didn't like Rowan, it still came out on top. Ha! Mine.

Only ever knew of Rowan Atkinson, who I completely forgot about when I named myself. And a cat my man and I almost adopted... also named Rowan.

Middle name Murray I covered in a different thread. Short version: I didn't like the middle name I picked for myself so I just had it in a state of constant flux. I saw an episode of Scrubs. The one with Matthew Perry guest starring. His name was Murray. I liked it despite the old mannyness of it. It fit so well that I shouted it... at three in the morning... and woke up the man.

I like how all it all rolls off my tongue. Rowan Murray A_____.

Fantastic.

MRH,  :)

I don't think you're a nutter or wacky.  It sounds as if "Scott" just came naturally--
so what could be more "natural" than calling yourself Scott!

I think someone else (tho I can't find the post now!?) used the male name that their
mom would have called them if they had been born male.  Mine is just the opposite.
My mother once told me that she had been thinking about calling me Sandra if she
should have a girl.  So my parents gave me both my legal name and my girl name!

It's interesting to read all the stories!

Thanks for the idea!

My initial screen name here was Chaunte - a morph of my male name created by my hairdresser Sue that now infamous Halloween 2003.  I wore this name for a number of years.  However, I remember the advice a secretary gave me back in the Eastman Kodak days as we were expecting our first child.  That was to say the name 100 time aloud and proud.  If you can't shout it 100 times, better look for something else.

After about the 13th time, it started to not fit me anymore.  It was like a dress that you bought at the store, brought it home and found that it really wasn't you.

What seemed more appropriate was a simpler morph of my birth name, and thus I became Shauna Marie.  Almost right away, it fit like a glove and I have yet to cringe at the saying or hearing of my name.

I do not remember adopting a female name for many years. I guess unimaginative me coould not get beyond "Hey me!" Years ago Susan just surreptitiously started showing up. Last year, while getting serious about this, I started a list of female names I like enough that I would name myself them at new birth. I tried a bunch, picked middle names, even names using my male initials, thinking I might backdoor the name transition by switching to using first and second initials, sort of from Bill Adam Smith to B. A. Smith to Betty Arlene Smith, or whatever.

Nothing sounded as good to me, for me, then Susan. Kay is a commonly used middle name. Nothing exotic here, including me.

Not really sure how or exactly when I came up with the name. I started using Laura a few years back when signing up for forums online. I've always liked the name. I've been trying to figure out what I would use as my middle name for a while now and have come up with Emily. Again, it seems to have come from out of "nowhere". For my last name, it's sort of a tribute to my mom. I've chosen to use her maiden name of Vincent. Thank you for starting this topic. It's been really interesting reading about everyone's experiences.

I picked mine early on. When I was 12 or so I asked my parents what they would've named me if I had been born a boy and they mentioned the name "Jesse". Ever since then I've felt that Jesse fit so much more than my given name. When it came time for me to pick, I immediately jumped on Jesse. It just had too much of a connection by that point not to be my name even though there were tons of other names out there to choose from.

My advice is, pick something that feels right. Just go by feel, not necessarily what you just think is a cool name. I'm really glad I did. I transitioned to the new name almost flawlessly.

It wasn't that long ago that I picked my name.
My favorite name in the world is Nathan, and for the longest time I thought it was going to be my name. I really loved it, and it was similar to my birth name (Natalie. Bleh :P), so i thought it was perfect. But then I realized, if I were to ever have a son, Nathan is the name I would want for him, not for me. After mulling that over for a while, I figured out that it didn't really fit me anyway. So the search for the right name continued.

So one day, a while after coming out, I was having a conversation about my transition with my best friend. She asked me what my name would be, and when I told her I didn't know, we started listing of names together. Since I'm horrible with coming up with names, I stole all of mine from TV shows. So I started listing names from Glee. Finn, Kurt, Will, Artie...
And then, there it was. Noah Puckerman. Noah. It's perfect. We both loved it. And so my name is Noah.

My middle name was much easier. Robert is my brother's name, my dad's name, my grandpa's name, my great-grandpa's name...I wanted to honor them all, so that's my middle name. Similarly, I wanted to keep my last name.

Noah Robert. It makes me happy just thinking about it.

And that was my long-winded and unnecessary explanation. XD

Too bad i'll never get to use it, but it is a nice thing to have.

Refering to Teknoir  up top with Dante: I love it. My Dad wanted to name me Wolfgang after Mozart but my mom shot it down....I was like that would be so bad a**! Instead I got stuck with John. Like my dad and 7 other men with the same first and last names as me in my town.  :-\

I chose Oliver, because it's the masculine form of my birth name and I wanted to keep my same initials, which is why I also took a male relative's name, Roger, for my middle name. Whenever my parents or people who knew me were gone, before transition, I would tell people my name was Oliver and I was just stuck, in my head. It fit so much better than my birth name and I respond to it like it's been mine for the past eighteen years.

Wonderful stories from everyone on name selection.  Some MtF women will adopt the feminized version of their birth name, ie Robert becomes Roberta, Sam/Samuel becomes Samantha, etc. I wasn't fond of the fem'ed version of my male name, and wanted a name that would help me keep focused on my womanhood [if that makes sense]. I also wanted one that sounded a little 'frisky' [to me anyway :)], and ever-so-exotic without being so far off the wall that it became an embarrassment in public. So I chose 'jannelle simone ____ ' - actually, my 30 yr old step-daughter helped me choose my middle name, 'simone' :). FWIW, only the last initial remains.
     Hugs,
jannelle

Right now I'm going by the name Rolf

I chose it because.....well...it's a little embarrassing. Too embarrassing to really explain it

I'll say this though. I heard the name when I was around 11 and first thought the name wasn't actually a real name. I thought it was made up just for that one part. I looked it up a couple days ago and found out it actually exists. So I'm giving it a try

mine is easy ... I've just always loved the name Jennifer Elizabeth since as far back as I can remember and it's the name I've chosen for myself.  I am keeping my last name as an honor to my family heritage no matter the future happenings with my family in regards to full disclosure or coming out ... just a side note, they do partial know that I am cross-dresser and trans, but not the full extent of my planning to fully transition to a woman in the future.

My wife and I are becoming increasingly more spiritual with a strong belief in the feminine principle and that we are here primarily as a learning experience for ourselves.  Through some personal exploration I have come to discover that on the other side I am a female entity named Amy.  I couldn't see any reason to change that.  I liked it and it feels right and so Amy it is.   :)

Ahhh this is a fun topic. I still haven't really got anything definitive, though I've been thinking about it for a while. My first thought was Jack or Jacky, which I'm currently using as my screenname for lack of anything better, since it's a nickname I've been using for nearly four years. But, while I like the name and I'm quite attached to it, I'm not entirely sure about using it as my real name, it doesn't seem quite right somehow. Also, I already have a cousin named Jack.
My middle name actually Martin, which I love, and I've been thinking of using that as a first name, since it's a name I like, and was my grandad's name. If I don't use it as a first name, I'll almost definitely keep it as my middle.
Other options are Daniel, which I quite like, or Laurence, which is a male long form of my birth name. (Laurie.) It just seems a little... over the top. Or something.
Bottom line, I'm still undecided.  ;) Hopefully I'll actually be out to my parents and friends soon, because I really want some input from my parents and I think it'd help me decide.

When I came out I had no idea what my name would be. I mean, I had only been thinking about it for 30 years. So after my spouse had some time to get used to the news I asked her if she would help me find my name. We then spent many hours over the next few weeks looking at almost every female name on a baby name website, making a list of all the ones that seemed possible. As we got towards the end I would look at the short list and most of them really didn't ring true, and two that seemed close, Kyra and Veronica. And then, about a dozen or so names from the end, there was Valerie. It just clicked. That's who I was. Kyra became my middle name because Valerie Kyra just works for me (and because I really didn't like the sound of Valerie Veronica.).

The last name was changed because my spouse and I both wanted new last names and we looked around a little together and found what we wanted pretty quick.

Such a fun topic! I've been calling myself Jill for at least a decade, probably longer.  At this point, I have no idea where it came from.  I do know that when I was thinking about names I wanted to keep the J initial from my male name, and that I didn't like the name my parents picked out if I was a girl (Jennifer).  It is kind of odd to think that I've been responding to two first names for that long, and the number of times it's almost gotten me in trouble.

Carolyn is a female name in English speaking countries, originally an alteration of the more ancient name Caroline. Caroline itself is one of the feminine forms of Charles, which goes back to a Germanic word that meant "free man". Another spelling is "Karolyn"

A girl (or guy, but trust me, they're pretty rare) who is very funny, caring, extremely intelligent, talented, and not to mention absolutely beautiful.

In short, she is just perfect.

A Carolyn will get along with nearly anyone and always knows what to say to cheer you up. She is a great friend and would never ever betray you. She would care for you no matter what.

The name Carolyn translates to "song of happiness" (from the word "Carol".) It is also commonly confused with the name Caroline. A Carolyn is the kind of girl who, once you meet her, she will always be in your heart.

So yea that's me.

Repost: I have chosen Mark E____ C________

First name isn't too special, just don't like my female name. It outs me too, which is probably why I dislike it. Sort of an unremarkable but definitely male name. It's short, simple and I think it suits me.

Middle name is my mother's maiden name, I have no problem with it and she deserves for me to at least try to honor her. No reason a good name should go to waste. It's Mexican although it ends with an "a" so might be perceived as feminine. But most probably won't even be able to figure out how to pronounce it. It's more like another last name than a second first name.

Last name is my old, I think it's German and I like it. No reason to change it. Nobody can spell it either. At least my first name is easy to read/write

I have a weird perspective on this...

See, my first name is Leslie, and although that's technically a unisex name, it's old-fashioned, and most people think it's pretty feminine.  So I always kind of resented it.

So... and I know this is gonna sound bad... despite all the enormous, overwhelming downsides to being transexual, I always envied the ability of being able to pick your own name.

One of the few pleasures of being trans is that we ussualy get to name ourselves.

Choosing my own name was more than slightly fun for me, Cynthialee. :p

I chose the name Alyssa for myself, mostly because it just rings true to who I am. There's no inherent meaning or symbolism behind it...I've always liked the name, and the two nicknames (Aly and Lyssa) are both very appealing to me as well.

I did originally want to change my name to Jack as an androgynous name. Unfortunately, there's already a Jacqueline in the family, and I wouldn't want to cause confusion. I think Alyssa's prettier for me anyway. =o

I chose Denise because she was the first girl I ever thought of as hot, way back in fifth grade.  My best friend and I, while Bob Scouts out camping, had an all-night discussion about girls.  We both agreed that Joan was the one we would marry...very smart and practical...and Denise was the one we wanted to kiss (these were the innocent old days when elementary school kids didn't even know what sex was).  I wonder where she is and what her life was like, as we moved soon thereafter, so I never even knew her in junior high...the age when I started noticing other girls.

I Remember wanting the name after reading Lord of the Rings when I was 16 or something.

I'm kinda frustrated because I have 3 names that are good choices and bad choices for different reasons.

Amy A name I gave myself when I was 10.
+ Some pepole online already know for years me as Amy.
- it feels odd picking your own name.
+ There's no reason why not
- I don't know if I like the name anymore.

Ellie a hypothetical female name from my mother
+ Given by a parent
+ I like the name
- Mother made clear she dosen't want to name me.
- Same initials as my sister makes post awkward.

Helen Hypothetical girls name from my father
+ Given by a parent
+ It's a nice name
- things are awkward with my dad.
- I know like 6 helens

It's so awkward I'm almost willing to ditch all three and just pick a new one completely at random XD

Unlike some trans I can look backwards at my former self with happiness. Heitor was a good boy to have come from, when I began to cross-dress I adopted Sandy as a full alter-ego. After high school there was some destructive behavior on my part and by my early twenties I decided that it was time for Sandy to go. Part of the new better me would come a full name that reflected my Portuguese-Brazilian heritage

(great, now I need FOUR new names)

Carletta is a lovely Portuguese girl's name that actually means "Beautiful Boy," this always carry's special meaning for me when I introduce myself to others. My new full name is ...

Beautiful Boy -- Wonderful News -- Circle of Flowers -- Near the Water.

I chose Allen Michael R___ because 1) I could keep my initials AMR and 2) I remembered one time when I was little my mom was talking about how she wanted to give my brothers and I sensible names that would sound professional no matter what career we chose. At the same time she didn't want our names to sound to old-fashioned or dated. I though Allen would fit in very well with my brothers names, Benjamin and Philip.

I tend to get lots of compliments about it. I will say, people did not often ask how to spell my old name (Jeremy) but they ALWAYS ask how Jerica is spelled. So that's kind of new for me haha.

My middle name Audry~ was chosen recently and I picked it because it is a very feminine name and I like the sound, but I don't know if that will be my final choice when I get my name changed, I will keep you informed. ^^

Josko, or as I later found out is correctly spelled, Joško, was just a random old Slovenian name I came across, my family being Slovenian with Slovenian names. It had double-O's, which struck me as very masculine, and so I chose it hastily.

It's supposed to be pronounced Yash-ko. But I prefer Yah-sko. Even still. It's really eccentric and I regret my rush. I mostly introduce myself as Joey because trying to correctly convey, spell, and explain "Josko" with every encounter is a bother.

Well, I put this elsewhere but...

I chose "Gabriel" as my name.  I love Christopher Walken and I love The Prophecy.  When I saw Christopher Walken playing Gabriel (the archangel) as a kid, I just feel in love with the name and with the actor.  Gabriel felt right to me, and I would later name a few characters Gabriel.  I then promptly forgot about it until later on when my friend asked me if I had a "boy name" and I said "not really...no, wait.  Gabriel, Gabe for short" because it hit me on the head.  The name just seems to fit me, plus I can do a play on sounds and get called "Gabrielle" so I can flip it.

I'm extremely new to this and very far from transitioning but I've already chosen my name, I think. :) When I told my best friend I asked her what I would call my self and then we sat there for a good 15 minutes coming with names. I don't like any female variants  of my birth name, Michael, so we tossed that idea out at the start. I came up with Kimberly. I've always liked the name, so I said it halfheartedly and she liked it and right when I said it I felt some sort of connection to it. So, as of right now that will be my name. I'm not sure what I will change my middle name to, if anything. William is a name I always liked, for a male, but it doesn't really bother me at this point!

Hi girls - and boys, new here, been reading for a while, I'm still choosing, but I like Tali, or Talitha, aramaic, meaning little girl, I chose this name before I knew its meaning,  not sure on the rest but I like Etymology and have come across a few names I like:
Caoihme, pronounced kee-vah, gaelic orig meaning beautiful
Seraphina, from Seraphim, hebrew orig. Meaning fiery ones, was and angel in the old testemant with 6 wings. There is a bible verse in isiaih verse 3 for those that are inclined that i like.
Shafirto, hebrew orig. Literally the word beautiful
Cadence, means balance in musical terms
Estrella de mar, asterie (not sure but I think this is just the word star), means starfish in spanish first and french second, I like starfish because they can change their sex at will or choose a sex.
So far I am thinking
Talitha Shafirto Asterie
Or
Seraphina Caiohme Asterie
Thanks
Tali... For now!

I have to say though, while I honor your commitment to the name and the reason for which you chose it, Demyx isn't really a good choice for a name. It hasn't been established as a name at all, and while it's not overtly a feminine name, it might confuse people who hear it if they don't know it's origins. I would suggest choosing a similar name and using Demyx for a nickname, or maybe a middle name.

Same here. I picked Aimee after my best friend, Aimee. She's the only person outside of you all who knew all I did about this. She passed on a few years ago, and it's my way of keeping her memory alive. I don't have a middle name, though I'm open to suggestions lol.

My screen name here, tuxgrrl, alludes to me being a Linux fangirl. Something that just recently occured to me is that it illustrates the dual me. I hate the male exterior, but it's there for now.

Currently musing with the idea of Daniél. That way on legal documents my name is "right", just missing an accent, and yet the pronounciation suggests feminity as "Danielle" or "Danyelle" are female birth names.

I never had a liking for my birth name but I never actually came up with an alternate name for myself til last year.  I went with Lucian cuz I found I like names ending in -ian and it just felt right, I liked the way it sounded n all.  I also found a site that shows how people rate the names on various scales (classic vs modern, Upperclass vs Common, Strong vs Delicate etc) and found the name to give a fitting impression and description of me, you could say.  And every time someone calls me Lucian I get this big grin on my face, so I seem pretty happy with it.  In addition, it means light, which could be interpreted as a new light coming into me/my life with this decision to be who I am. *shrug*

As for my middle name, I easily converted my original into its masculine partner (although even that could be read as a female name).  But now I'm wondering whether I want it at all.  I think I'd like to have a name that means something to me instead.  I was given a nickname that I hold special, but I'm not sure that I want it as a legal name.  So we'll see.

I wasn't going to explain my name choice because I didn't think it was that interesting a story, but what the heck.

The initials of my birth first and middle name are DA and at first I wanted to keep them and maybe use feminine versions of both. The only names I came up with that were even remotely OK with me were Dennie Artine, but it sounded too dated to me, so I just chose a bunch of names I really liked and then put it to a bunch of people that were "in" on my secret as a poll: Which name sounds most like "me"?

Funny thing is, I ended up not even picking the most popular choice, and went with April Dawne, which coincidentally is my original birth initials in reverse. Now people say that April is perfect for me, lol. I wasn't positive about it, and even considered Kathryn Alexis, but now April Dawne is exactly who I feel I am. I chose it partially also because it was April when I first "discovered" myself, and it was like a new "dawn" for me. As if I was walking out of a nightmare into the morning sun for the first time.

Ok, that sounds totally corny huh? lol. Time to shut up, April! HAHA.

My given name is Tim, so I'm currently thinking that Kim would suit me, but I don't know.  The first name I tried was Maggie, which was the name of a childhood dog, and she was a good dog and we loved her a lot.  But, not sure I really felt right being named after a dog, lol.  On the other hand, I realized the other day that my mother's middle name is Margaret, so I could honor her by using Maggie, but at this point I'm not even sure she'd want anything further to do with me if I come out to my parents.  I'm not even sure whether I want to keep my surname or go with something else, because I'm frankly not sure whether my family would support me in this or not.  I guess I'll reserve judgement until and unless the time comes when they're aware, and I see how they react.  Being as I'm 54, there is a LOT of history there, and now suddenly there's going to be Herstory as well.  (sigh)  Anyway, so far I'm not unhappy with Kim, but my surname starts with M as well, and I've always felt it's awkward having the last letter of my first name and first letter of my last name form a bridge between them.  Sheesh, this stuff is hard, and choosing a name is actually one of the EASY parts, theoretically...  ::)

Been thinking about this for a while... I've really got two main possibilities right now. One is using my current middle name, Martin, as my first name, since I really like that name. The other is I'm quite fond of the name Daniel, and I like the sound of Daniel Martin H--------. On the other hand, I don't want to end up getting called Danielle or something of the sort. Opinions? Advice?  ;D

@ Jacky I like the way Daniel Martin sounds. It sounds really smart! :D And if people call you Danielle simply remind them you are Daniel not Danielle and you will not respond to Danielle and then don't respond to it. If they want your attention they'll call you Daniel. :D

Janie Marlena mix up to become Laineyjain. A friend of mine sister's name was Marlena her nickname was Mardi. At the time my nickname was Marty so I took it as my middle name. Janie came from me trying to feminize the name James to go with Marlena. Jamie did not flow well to me so I change the M to an N.

I chose mine because I like it and it is a fairly traditional name that doesn't raise any eyebrows.

Picking a name must be consistent with your age, remember, names are very much a fashion thing. Certain names become popular at different times. For example, one rarely hears of an Elsie being born these days but it was popular 60 or 70 years ago. Likewise if you are 60 years old, selecting a name like Kylie would be inconsistent.

I've only gotten as far as a first name, Kelly.. Why? I went to high school with a girl called Kelly and would have loved to have been her.. The other possibility was Sibella, which is what my mum had planned to call me if I'd been born in a female body. I might use it as a second name..

Kellys are pretty awesome, it's just a fact :P

In my case, Kelly would have been my name if I were born with all the right parts.  When I came out to my mom and told her I was using Kelly as my name she teared up and asked me whether or not I knew that was going to be my name because she didn't remember ever telling me.  I know she told me when I was really young, I don't remember exactly when, but I guess it just stuck in the back of my mind ever since.

My first name, Isabella is just a name I've always loved and people already call me Izzy so I figured why not roll with that hehe :D. I just hope people don't start calling me Bell, I'm love Bella but Bell is kind of annoying lol. My middle name will be Alice, because I love Alice in wonderland and her personality is just like mine but also because of a friend who passed away who has inspired me. I'm going to change my last name too and then hopefully move somewhere across the country or possibly across the world.

My mother was somewhat crestfallen when I had informed her that I had already choosen a name. If I would have known how much she would have wanted to rename me I would have not come out as Cyndi and would have let her hang me with whatever name she choose. But I had already choosen and everyone already knew me as Cynthia so it was too late.

I don't really have an alternate name yet. My current name is very feminine and while I like it I've been advised by several people that I should pick a more masculine name 'just in case'.

I've had a lot of trouble because I want a kind of unique name (like my birth name) but it's difficult to find anything that resonates with me. My partner is Norwegian and since being with them and visiting Norway I've become really taken with the language and Scandinavian names. I especially like 'compound' first names (my partner has one and so do a lot of people they know).

We were talking one night recently and I was musing on a possible male name and they threw a bunch of Norwegian ones at me and Thor-Stein really caught me. It sounds much better on the tongue as it's pronounced Tor-Schtein. The S in Norwegian is often said with an Sch sound, similar to german and some other scandinavian languages.

I chose my name, Kaci, when I was in third grade. See, I played softball for a year, and there were two or three other people who shared my birth name. My birth name is "Kristina", so at first they were just like, "Okay, we'll call you Krissy." Of course, I rejected that without a thought and immediately told them to call me "Kaci".

Unfortunately, Kaci didn't last for all those years. I mean, I've always hated my name, but people would refuse to call me by any other. Then last year I switched schools, and they let me introduce myself as the name I chose for myself. So half of the people in my school don't even know my real name. In fact my one friend went on vacation with us, and my mom was all "Kristina lock the door." or whatever. My friend was just like, "Who's Kristina?" XD And she was dead serious. It was amazing. I also had a teacher say, "Kaci's not your real name?" to me. xDD I can't wait to have it changed officially!

And on a random note, Kaci is actually based off of my intials, KC. I thought it was clever in third grade, but now I'm kinda...iffy on it haha. But I'm not changing my name to anything else.

I decided on a unisex name as I felt it would make things easier during transition. I knew that it wouldn't look out of place next to mr or ms while going through the whole name change, which I feel won't be complete for many a year.... no doubt :S
I made a list of names and with my mum we narrowed them down by elimination.
I also felt that it would be easier for people to call me a unisex name while I'm presenting as "inbetween", I feel that I present very much as androgynous while going through transition so to me it seems perfect and easier to deal with both for me and others.
The original idea was as well to change my name again to something more feminine once I was back from SRS but I'm not 100% on that as the name Shannon is growing on me and I could stick with it quite easily. But yeah the idea was to change it again so that when I have to deal with the whole "previous name" thing on certain paper work it would be Shannon instead of my birth name.
Like a stepping stone.
I don't know I guess it will mostly depend on how much my birth name haunts me post-op. :P

I've had Strife as a surname for years, I never liked my original surname and I'm a big nerd and wanted to rob a video characters name :P

LOL!!!   For sooo many years I wanted my name to be Sephiroth!  I even went by the nickname Seph is highschool!  :D  He's still my idol, but I finally figured out it probably wasn't a good idea to take that name.

The name I initially decided to go by (Kael) was from a novel I'm writing. One of the gods in the fantasy world I created is named Ghurrin Ka'el (Ger-inn kah-ell), but in human form he was Kael.
Not too long after I started going by that, I discovered people had a tendency to not hear me correctly, and were trying to call me Kay or Gayle. *shiver* Bit of a step backwards, really.

So...I was reading a fantasy novel in which the character's name was Byren, and it clicked. I was always a fan of Lord Byron, and Byren was an easily recognizable sound, with an uncommon enough spelling to satisfy my need for an unusual name.

So, for now, it's Byren Kael.  I intend to change my last name, too, though not out of any need for separation from the past. It's just a pain in the butt to get people to spell/say it right (it's German) so I have something very easy to say and spell picked out instead.

But than there is also Serenity and Remedii (Remedy)...SO IDK...It'll take some time and tweaking and I don't know yet if I'm going to change my last name...So who knows.

As many of us have, I realized that I was "different" when I was about 6.. What sticks out in my mind is the beginning of first grade. I made two friends very quickly, Lisa and Jessica,  and we hung out at every opportunity. As a result, I was teased mercilessly... called a sissy and a girl. I remember just not understanding at all... I just felt that playing with girls was the natural thing to do. It was Jessica that stands out as being the first person to really show me kindness when everyone else teased me... And that's why I adopted her name.

Well, the first initial of my first name is D. Somewhere along the line early in our relationship, my wife started referring to me as D and everybody else picked up on it. Of course, I have noticed in emails when people would write me, that they didn't realize that it wasn't Dee. I kinda liked that people were referring to me in a name that could be interpreted as female, so I would never correct them. It is only today that I have "come out" and used it to refer to the female me. Funny thing is that today I bought some donuts with my son and the manage called out to the girl behind the register as Megan. For some reason that name struck a bullseye in my brain. It literally sent an "Aha!" shiver down my spine. So I am thinking of demoting Dee to a middle name. Megan was ranked #199 in the baby names list in 1971. Dee was actually much less popular in 1971 and had just about died out in usage. How does Megan Dee sound? Or even just Megan? Too young for a 39 yr old? Curse my teenage girl brain!

Just think of the kids when I finally got to choose my own clothes calling me A-man-duh! Finally in high school I met my ex who asked me a question I hadn't really thought of before... I met someone, who I just clicked with straight away, she seemed to beable to see my feminine side, even though I was at work, (FT Male), before I knew it we were talking away about everything, and though nothing was revealed, it was one of the best days I've had, Sadly she is moving away, but, I think I would like to adopt her name, I don't think she would mind, LOL.
Also, my Aunts name is Anne, and we have always been close...
What do you think, (I;ve just changed my avatar to a picture of me - albeit a morphed one, though I have only have a virtual make over and morphed to an artistic style, no photoshopped changes, the only real noticible change is my nose is smaller and eyes a little larger.

I oddly chose Joseph for a very personal reason and for a very practical reason.  The personal one, being ridiculed and ostracized by my ethnic community so often, yet still feeling the need to protect and fight for them coupled with dreams of success led me to the name Joseph.  The practical, when I first started crossdressing I wanted a very unassuming, bland and forgettable name so I would not stand out in people's memories.  Korean Americans seem to name their male children by cutting out Bible names, putting them into a hat and taking whatever shows up.  Old English is popular too.  At the time I went by Joseph Kim, then because everyone would assume I was Japanese Joseph Takahashi.  I've only recently started to use my given last name.

Hi .

Having back ground that is not so normal & having names to reflect that .

Given names ,

  noel or  no-el , edward , manfried ,Von Reutchthos ,  Loch-head.
sirname is scotish .  meaning head of the Loch,

my forth name is Prussian denoteing my Prussian back ground .
& manfried should have been spelt mannfried as in german .

noel is female  as well,so was going to be noeleen & one of the  r. n s ,  in phuket said no it has to be noeleena*, & the a is stressed as in aaa & so thats my name & my 2nd is edwina last name is the same,
& i belive that my 3 rd & 4 names were all i was going to have till my mum put her foot down & said no , noel will be my first name . i only knew my father for the first 5 years ,

So when you go back 63 years youll know why . because of the 2 nd WW  or the end of it, so having a german name at that time was not so good ,

...noeleena...

The second is Colwyn which is the name of a river in Northern Wales. Ever since I was small, I loved the letter K and the phonetic associated with it. When I wanted a female name a few years ago, I experimented with many names beginning with K.

I decided to go with Kairi after playing a video game called Kingdom Hearts. Its the name of one of the characters in the game. I thought the name sounded cute and fell in love with it instantly. I've been signing my diary with it ever since. It's of Japanese origin.

I think I'm going to go with Lukas Gabriel Charlot.  I've been a fan of the name "Lukas" for quite awhile and I just love the name "Gabriel" and "Charlot" is in honor of my great-grandma who saved my life, it was her last name.  I like how the name goes together really well and it feels pretty good, but we'll see.

I'm still new so working on it. I was thinking of Amber, Bailey or Becky - they are 3 girls in my life that show me how awesome and strong and amazing a woman can be, and thought of it as a homage and a reminder of the woman I can be
But I got away from that mind-set and started thinking of a name for me , and seeing as my last name starts with Z, and I love how unique that letter is, I am almost convinced on Zoe. Cute, simple, feminine. Me :)
and Amber as a middle name I think

It's the name my mom planned to give me if I had been born a biological boy and I like it because I don't feel it's too feminine or too masucline.

I chose Mary, because Maria has always been my favorite female name, but no hispanic blood in me so Maria would seem awkward.  I'm currently think of changing it to Lex.  Luckily I'm new at this so I can still change my name.

I have known I was ftm since I was about 4.  I remember asking my parents what they would have named me if I had been born a boy and they told me Christopher.  Since they named my brother something else I figured my parents knew best so I went with Christopher.  As for my middle name, as a female it was my mom's maiden name, and I wanted to keep her family in my name so I took her dad's first name as my middle  name, Gabriel.

Since my deed poll arrived today, I thought I might spend my two penneth. ^_^

I chose "Gemma" initially because it's the only girl's name I've really liked. There was a Scottish girl at my junior school with that name, but no-one else I've known has been named the same, so it seemed like a safe option.

I faced a problem in that I'm proud of my male name; it's Scottish, as is my Mum and most of my family from there backwards. I could not come up with a nice Scottish name to match, but "Gemma", despite being of middle-eastern descent, is a popular name north of the border. So that did me.

Jesse is a shortened version of my more feminine, rather common name (I bet most can guess which one.)  It's pronounced the same as Jessie of course, though when I was young I had learned to spell it Jesse instead and was rather confused when others 'corrected' my spelling of it in grade school.

Perhaps this will change in the future, but for now I rather like the name and it requires minimal fuss.  It's also rather androgynous, which suits me just fine. :)

My name is officially Liam. My two best mates chose it. I liked the name, and it also has significance as it was the name of a teacher whom I looked up to in my school years. Liam means Will (as in the will to survive), Strength and Protection. I also changed my last name, as it held negative connections to my bio Father. My mother chose my middle name, Gabriel.

Wow, this thread has been going a long time!  I enjoyed reading through all the ways folks came up with their names but didn't see anyone with an experience quite like mine, so I'm going to jump on the bandwagon and share my story.

My parents didn't know my biological sex until I was born, and they picked out a gender-neutral, common name without reference to their culture for if I'd had boy parts and a feminine, uncommon name with a strong cultural link for if I'd had girl parts.  When I came out to my mom, she said she should have given me the boy name; my parents didn't know it was gender-neutral at the time, and they had no idea what a surprise my gender would be, nor did they expect me to grow to reject their culture.  I'm likely to use this name because it's the one I always should have had, but it might just be a middle name because I ended up growing attached to having an unusual name, and I feel like choosing a name that's ethnically inconsistent with my heritage would be disingenuous to my personal struggle with it.  For now, I'm primarily going by a masculinization of one of my potential girl names that preserves the cultural implication and uniqueness of my given name.

I'm still in the process of deciding my name.  I generally just use a feminized version of my own birth name (which I haven't decided I want to do since I think I'd like to have something different to mark the difference in persona), or I also like a shortened version of my online persona (Alisse), but I still haven't settled on anything yet. I also have been considering Jessica, Melissa and Andria / Andi.  - I like names ending in vowels that contain "i"'s so I can do a loopy thing with the vowel and also embellish the dot over the 'i' when I sign my name :)

Cheers -

Astarielle was something I kind of came up with out of the blue with my friends, but I found it fit me so easily. The only problem I have is that I have/had a friend who used the name Star online, but I haven't seen her in awhile, so I wonder what happened.

Excellent explanations!

Sorry to be The Village Simpleton here, but I chose my name because it begins with the same first letter as my given name, has the same number of letters in it and just "feels" right.  Lynne?  Alliteration, symmetry and euphony.  Lacey Lynne.  Just love it.  No profound explanation.  Sorry, but that's it!

My soon-to-be-surname came from my work.  It is the surname of an awesome nurse practitioner in New York City who is:  Competent, brilliant and hot!  Love, love, love her surname.  Lastly, it is Italian as is my given surname.  Translated, it means:  Good saint.  I just like the name.

Love all your posts!    :D

My name is kind of a pun. It's hard to explain how I came up with Kyle. I started to just adore the name a couple of months before I changed it. When I started transition I thought I would keep my unisex name, but I was like no..I want to be Kyle. People kept trying to convince me to change it and I would only get dysphoric. It's me, it just is.
My middle name is Kacey. I got it because my parents don't like the name Kyle and my last name starts with c, so they started calling me KC. And I was at first thinking they spelled the name Kasey out not realizing it was my initials. I looked up the spellings the name and saw Kacey which was pronounced the same as my nickname AND had the letters in it. And we kind of just went from there.
My middle name was originally going to be Lee but my mom was like NOOOOOO because of a woman named Lee that she hates, so Kacey was something we could all agree on.

I had one of those hyphenated last names. I had to drop the second one because I associated it too much with the birth name and I wanted to separate myself from her and what better way than to think of us with 2 different last names

Oh my. Choosing a name is such an ordeal... And to tell the truth, I don't really care. So I asked my mother what would've been my name, being born a girl. She knew the answer right on of course and thereby saved me from a lot of useless thinking :) The fun part of this, I asked her in totally male mode, many years ago. I probably have had a bit too much to drink but somehow she didn't seem surprised of the question. hmm :)

My first name was chosen after a really cute girl I knew and had a huge crush on called Kristin. When I went out I used an abbreviated version of Kriss. My then wife had an affair with a guy called Chris and I didnt want to use Kriss as my name any more but as I still liked it I feminised it to Krissy. When deciding to change my name I needed something more formal for my first name so I decided on Krissandra.

My middle name was quite unique as a male name and there was a local girl who was quite a famous model and her surname was my middle name so I adopted her first name Gemma as my middle name (plus the fact I liked Gemma)

My surname stayed the same.

Easy lol

My name has actually always been a part of me. When I was younger and would write short stories I would often personify myself in these characters that were, for the most, part male; and usually they were named Dylan. I have been going by it for the last few months and it really suits me. As for my middle name, if I could choose it I would like it to be Augusten because I like it and it keeps my birth-name initial "A" in my initials, but since I want my parents to choose my name I am thinking it will be something that leans more to my Hispanic heritage, like my birth-name(Ana). Either way I don't really care since it won't really be the name I'll be called for the rest of my life.  :)

I wanted to keep my girl name as Alex since my biological name is Alexander and most of my friends call me Alex. The reason for this was to stress the fact that, while I may present myself as a girl from time to time that, in the end, it's still me.

However, a problem occurred when I opened up a separate Facebook account for my girl side. I added the same friends on there and, of course, they accepted my request without hesitation... but I started getting complaints.

It appears that some of them wanted to know which side of me, boy or girl, posted certain things on Facebook. Having "Alex" be the name of my boy and girl sides became unacceptable because of this. After many comments, someone suggested changing my girl name to "Lexi" and it was approved unanimously by my close friends. I then changed my full name to "Lexine," with "Lexi" being my nickname, and it somehow matched how I acted as a girl.

I was originally going to officially go with something unisex, and Sam was the only one of those names that I liked. Then after I got a little more comfortable with the idea of changing my name (I don't like it, but it's, y'know, my name. I'm attached to it if only by habit) it was Samuel, because Sam Vimes is cool and probably the reason I like the name so much. My dad wanted Adrian to rhyme with what everyone but my mum calls me, but I didn't like that one much and had made up my mind a while back. Sam still has the 'm' at the end, so it's easy for everyone else and not so obvious if they mess up. I think it's not so much the new name itself that trips up well-meaning people but the muscle memory that spits out the old syllables even as they're thinking in the new ones.

I would have been called Ian Michael if born male, so Ian's a good middle name and also works with my signature. Otherwise I would have masculined the middle name to Lewis and left it at that.

Right now I myself trying to decide between Fie and Sebastian, Bran.
Fie is scottish for "Dark of Peace" while Sebastian is greek for "Venerable" and finally Bran is celtic for "raven" =)
I like how both sound and can't really decide. The name Fie has more connection to me. I was sitting on a bus in Santorini debating the meaning of life (like one does aha)and I got to thinking about names. I'd never heard the name before, and didn't even know it was a name but suddenly my mind went. "Fie. The name is Fie." Because of my beliefs I do believe that it might have been my male spirit giving me this name but I'm not 100% sure. Ever since i've associated with the name Fie. Then the name Sebastian is also another contender simply because I like how the name sounds, it reminds me of the sea (aha Captain Sebastian) and if ever I felt more connected to something than nature it's the ocean. I scuba dive and the most beautiful thing in the world for me is the sound of silence one can hear when they are in the sea, so beautiful. =) Who knows, in the end I might just adapt Sebastian as a middle name x)

I think I posted on this thread a while ago when I was using "Kim", because it's close to my given name (Tim), but I've since decided that doesn't suit me for various reasons, so I've settled on Colleen.  First, because I'm of Irish extraction, so I wanted an Irish name, and second, because it's also used as a word meaning "Girl", which I am.  On here, I use the last name "Ireland", but I'm actually hoping to keep my real last name (begins with McT), because, well, because it's mine.  And I have children also, and it would be a way of honoring them.  But I'm not out to them yet, and they may not wish to be "honored" in that way, and my parents may decide they'd rather not know me anymore, so I'm prepared to use Ireland as my (new) last name if I need to...

I chose Niamh because I liked the sound (say: neev) and general feel of the name. It's from Irish mythology and it's short for niamhrach which is Irish for 'bright' or 'brilliant' as in 'bright light'. I just felt it fitted me perfectly. In Irish legend Niamh was the lover of Oisín, a great warrior-poet and they spent many a happy year in Tír na nÓg, or 'The Land of Youth'.

It has no connection in meaning or sound or origin to my official male name and in that way it's like a clean-break.

The name shares the same root as the name Caoimhin, the Anglicised version of which is Kevin.

My male name is gender specific.. so I decided to keep my same initials.. then I sent an email to my daughters, girlfriend and a couple of close friends with a list of possibilities.. then I took their input and finally chose one of the choices that none of them chose. It was fun!
