It is my personal opinion that we need art exchanges around these parts. Art exchanges are amongst my favorite things in the universe. On that note, I've decided I'm going to host one and see if I can get the tradition started here.
For those of you who don't know what an art exchange is:
Basically, it's like a "Secret Santa" event, except with art. People sign up and post references for what they want drawn. You could ask for art of a character of yours, your favorite animal, yourself or a friend/family member/pet, a character they like from a book/movie/game/etc... even a theme ("draw me something involving violins" or "Norse mythology" or "gender dysphoria") Anything, really. Whoever is hosting the event (in this case, me) will secretly match up participants and private message each participant telling who they're drawing for. You then have a certain amount of time (usually around a month is standard) to draw whatever that person wants drawn. Once you finish your picture,
private message it to me so it's kept secret until the big reveal-date. Once everyone has sent in their pictures, I will create a board with everyone's lovely artwork on it so people can collect their art and thank whoever drew for them. (A lot of times people like to play a guessing game to figure out who drew for who.)
Anyone can participate! You don't have to be the world's greatest artist, as long as you put some effort into your part of the exchange. It's about fun and community and gift-giving, not about collecting professional-quality art. Don't feel bad if you aren't the best artist and don't throw a tantrum if the person who drew for you isn't.
On that note, it would be nice for everyone to at least do a
finished picture with coloring (or shading, as the case may be for those who do greyscale) or a background. I know some people have a hard time with backgrounds-- you're not expected to draw full-blown scenery or anything if you don't want to. Just a pattern or something will work, as long as you do something to fill the background to give your picture has a more finished feel to it. That way, we don't have half the participants getting masterpieces and the other half getting tiny headshots and uncolored sketches. Just to be fair.
Sounds like fun, right?
If you want to sign up, just fill out this form and post it on this board:
QuoteYour Name: (self-explanitory)
What you want drawn: (your characters, fandom characters, yourself/friends/pets, favorite animals, specific themes... you name it, just make sure you include any references people might need to draw what you want drawn)
What you can draw: (humans, animals, "anthro" characters... tell me what you draw so I have someone who only draws humans trying to draw someone's pet cat)
Examples of your art: (again, so I can match people more accurately and don't have a a horror artist drawing cute fluffy bunnies... links to a couple representative pieces or to DA/Photobucket/other art site account will do)
The deadline for sign-ups will be
May 9, 2010, so you have about a week to sign up. I'll then sort people and have PMs sent out within a couple days, and you'll have until
June 30, 2010 to finish your art. Does that sound fair?
If anyone has any questions, feel free to ask!
P.s.- I'll be signing up, too, because these things are too fun to resist. I'm going to use a random-number system for matching people, so don't worry about me being biased and matching myself differently than everyone else. Here's my sign-up form:
Your Name: Diane
What you want drawn: I would love something involving m->-bleeped-<-ie(s) (http://identify.whatbird.com/img/4/326/image.aspx)! They're my spirit in animal form, so-to-speak. Extra kudos if include a luna moth (http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_zXz77sj6CFc/SkE8wLe97rI/AAAAAAAAAGY/A4-IFUkfugc/s400/MothLuna.jpg) friend (representative of my best friend) and/or a bull-frog (http://myanimalblog.files.wordpress.com/2008/02/bullfrog.jpg) buddy (representative of my awesome brother), or maybe rainbows or some violets (http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_kZ-NdSRhKmo/SIkBt8XwvKI/AAAAAAAAAJ8/8MRAOM9cBms/s320/Violets.jpg) (the flowers or the leaves). Pretty open-ended-- have fun with it and be as creative and interpretive as you want!
What you can draw: Animals, anthro characters, humans, whatever
Examples of your art: My DeviantArt (http://ninetails390.deviantart.com/)
You know...
f-it...
I'm in!
Your Name: Miniar
What you want drawn: There's a recurring person in my drawings who I "collect" art of. He's half way between an elf and an anthropomorphic cat. Covered in a short coat of fur, mostly gray with little blue highlights and a "hint" of blue tiger-like stripes on his back. Loong catty ears, but a mostly humanid face. Long tail, but plantigrade feet. He is "Miniar".
What you can draw: Anything! As long as I get to put my own spin on it...
Examples of your art: My Current DA Account (http://miniar.deviantart.com/) & My Old DA Account (http://freetha.deviantart.com/)
Huzzah! A participant! 8D (I'm very enthusiastic about this-- I participate in these things all the time, but I've only ever hosted one once before.)
Hey Miniar, do you have any pictures of this character (drawn by you or by anyone else) that you could link to along with your description just to give a clearer concept of what he looks like? I can surmise pretty well just from your description, but I know a lot of artists really appreciate visual references, especially for secretive exchanges like this where they can't just up and ask for clarification from the person they're drawing for.
It's a steady feature in my DA work, more in the old than in the new, but it's in both.
^^
Hey, I want in on this! I've never done anything like it, but it's been a while since I had an art project. :)
Your Name: Farm Boy
What you want drawn: I would love for someone to draw a picture of my dog, Dusty. Sort of as a memorial. (She died in a tragic surgery accident.) She was a 20 pound mutt who was known to others as evil, or "demon dog" because she was my guardian and saw the entire world as a threat. :D Here are some reference pictures.
http://i450.photobucket.com (http://i450.photobucket.com)
http://i450.photobucket.com (http://i450.photobucket.com)
What you can draw: Animals are my forte. I can do inanimate objects well enough with a reference photo, but my people are still cringe-worthy. (Work in progress.)
Examples of your art: My DA account (//http://) (Not much here, it's hard to get decent pictures with a camera rather than a scanner.)
Your Name: SilverFang
What you want drawn: Frost dragon. That would be awesome. Or maybe a winged human that looks somewhat possible (as impossible as that may be.)
What you can draw: Human (Slightly-realistic manga style) animals (manga style) could probably do some scenery/inanimate objects but mostly I prefer drawing people. Just don't draw clothes all that well.
Examples of your art: Sorry, don't really have it on the 'net. No DA, don't regularly photograph my pencil sketches and digital art stays on my hard drive unless it is a request.
This is a cool idea...does creative photography count, because I seriously suck at drawing...unless you like goofy stickman cartoon strips.
Oh sod it...I want to improve my drawing skills anyway.
Your name: Rock_Chick
What I want drawn: a giant tentaclular mongoose, fighting it's arch nemesis, the perambulatory land shark....yes, that's a giant mongoose with tentacles instead of feet and a shark with wheels on the tips of it's fins and a huge dorsal sail that can zoom up beaches and eat environmentalists.
what I can draw: just about anything...badly  on a more serious note mixed media work ie photo montage etc
examples of my work: sorry, only photos :(
Oh hey, we're getting a pretty decent turn-out, considering this isn't a predominantly artist-based community! I'm excited~
And Rock-chick, you don't have to be a super-amazing artist to participate. No worries. 83 Also, if you can find a way to incorporate creative photography/photomanipulation/mix of photography and drawing for whoever you get matched to, you're welcome to-- though that miiight prove tricky, since most people are asking for art of not-very-photographable things (i.e. fictional entities, very specific animals, etc.) If you get an idea that incorportaes photography, though, more power to you!
Also, of course, I plan to take people's artistic strengths into consideration while matching. (I'm going to match initially using random numbers, but rearrange as needed in case an animals-only artist gets matched with someone who wants art of an inanimate object or something like that.)
I've changed mine...I haven't done any mixed media stuff for aaaaaaaages, but it lets me play to my strengths.
All the requests cause me to go "oooooh" in one way or another. I have ideas, images in my head for the lot.
I'm actually looking forward to this!
(disclamer, my contribution "may" take a long time.. like.. a month even!.. )
It occurs to me that many of the artists here are not cartoonists, unlike most of the places I frequent, and that a lot of the art styles you all use are a bit more time consuming to work with. Would it perhaps be beneficial if I extended the deadline for finishing, a bit? Does the end of June sound like a good end time, so people who can zoom through pictures in under a week aren't feeling left behind, but people who use more time-consuming styles/media aren't stuck being crunched into an obnoxiously short time frame? That would give people a little over a month and a half, which I imagine should be sufficient even for people who use time consuming art styles or who have limited free time.
What do you guys think? I want to make this as democratic as possible, so if anyone has input, toss it my way~ End of June: Too long? Too short? Just right?
End of june sounds good to me.
I'll be making it up as I go along...it could take hours...it could take weeks
End of June sounds great! Ideally it wouldn't take me more than a week or two to finish a picture, but my free time has gone down and I no longer have a work station. (Sharing a room with 2 siblings doesn't leave any room for a desk!)
Just cause deadline is end of june doesn't mean we can't finish earlier. Just means that if we can't, it's okay.
June is good.
Well I've had some reservations on signing up for this just because I figured people would mostly want character drawings and I don't draw characters or anime and the like. But hey I might as well give it a shot.
Name: Osiris
What I want drawn: A proud albino llama shedding a tear for fallen comrades. It's an image that came to mind tonight when someone mentioned llama burgers so I'd be interested to see how someone else would interpret this.
What I can draw: I will occasionally draw with pen and ink (never with pencil) and tend to have a cartoon style. I don't draw often so I'm kinda rusty. More recently I've worked on CGI art and playing around with making random objects, Example: Key Chain. (http://osiriszoso.deviantart.com/art/Nowhere-to-go-163208691). I've also started playing around with making sort of anthropomorphic characters Example: Cheetah/Woman Portait (http://osiriszoso.deviantart.com/art/Portrait-of-a-Warrior-163264144). I also paint in oils and acrylics Example: Koi Fish (http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/hh125/osiris_zoso/Photography/Fish1NTsm.jpg). Which technique I will use will depend on what subject I get and which one I feel is the best to execute the image.
Examples of my work: For more examples of my work you can visit my deviant art page http://osiriszoso.deviantart.com/ (http://osiriszoso.deviantart.com/)
I humbly submit my request to have Osiris draw me as an anime character in the likeness of Nazumi Hapkiza. Please. I beg of you Osiris-san. Lol.

Your Name: Drain
What you want drawn: a fighter jet! any style
What you can draw: anything :D! i enjoy drawing cartoony animals, out of practice with people, and i don't draw anime.
examples: (hide)X(clamation).deviantart.com minus the parentheses
I love that a sizeable portion of people who have signed up have made an "I don't draw anime" disclaimer, yet I'm fairly certain no one has asked for anime-anything-- uh, well, except Meghan. x3
Meghan and Janet, you two should join the fun! 8D
Your Name: LordKAT
What you want drawn: image of me as interpreted from my posts
if interesting, I'll use it for an avatar
What you can draw: line drawings mostly, scenic stuff, some animals (been long time tho)
examples: gone in my loss of my past (long story)

Also, tonight is the deadline for sign-ups! Tomorrow morning when I get up, I'll be matching people, so make sure you are signed up by them if you want to participate~

Hey, we're up to 10 participants, now! How exciting is that?! Let's see how many more awesome people we can recruit!
(I'm kind of absurdly delighted that people are actually signing up for this. Look at all the diversity of styles and requests! This is going to be really fun~)
Your Name: Chloe
- What you want drawn: learning to fly
- What you can draw: anything you want, including anime
- Examples of your art:
Here is hoping Chloe gets my name. Love the alluring things she does.
well my surgery date is Summer Solstice (June 21), so it may take me a tiny bit longer :)
Somehow I think it will be well worth the wait.
=)
excited, excited, excited! there's a couple I'd really like to do, but I'll just keep quiet and see what comes my way. ;D
Update: I'm not picky, I'll take any request. But don't expect the best job (I'm probably one of the worse artists here.)

Same here! I'm excited to see everybody's work! It's been too long since I've been in an art setting...
Alright, I have everyone matched up! Momentarily, you should all be getting a boring, official-looking PM containing details about who you're drawing for and a few reminders about deadlines and such. |D
If you have any questions about who you were matched with, PM me, and if you have questions about the exchange in general, post here. This is my first time hosting one of these, and I'm pretty sure it's the first time most of you have been in one, so I don't want misunderstandings to happen because I assumed something was obvious when it actually wasn't. 8D;
...on a related note: Matching people up is hard! Hopefully everyone is happy with who they get matched with. If you absolutely, positively cannot draw what the person you were assigned is asking for (not "oh, this isn't fun" but "Ahhhh, this is artistically impossible for me!"), please get back to me by the end of today and I'll try my best to rearrange for you. (Due to the possibility of this, I don't recommend anyone actually start their pictures until tomorrow, just in case I need to make a switch for someone. If you want to, you're welcome to, but do so at your own risk.)
P.s.- In case it wasn't obvious, don't tell anyone who you're drawing for, so it's a surprise~
I'm looking forward to seeing what you guys create.
Alright, messages are all sent out! Is everyone happy with who they're drawing for?
Have fun, everyone! (I know I will, for suresies~)
yes I can pull this one off, lol (though reserving the right to add my own bit of artistic interpretation :P)
Somehow I knew I was gonna get the one I got. :P Good thing too I've a been mulling over how to achieve the image. I hope it comes out ok!
I have No idea how I'm gonna pull this off... but I'll figure it out..
Just need to get my head the right way and let it flow...
In a word it's perfect. Now excuse me while I go away to smash some old electronics. hehe
Alrighty, well I'm done. Diane you should have the pic in your PM box. 8)
That was a lot of fun. Now's the hard part where I gotta wait until everything's posted so that people can see it. :D
I'm glad everyone seems to be enjoying their art assignments! I'm still pondering pose/setting ideas for mine, but I'm pretty darn excited~
...and holy crud, I still can't get over how fast Osiris finished. XD
:D
I can crank out pics pretty fast. I settle in to start working on something a few hours later I'm uploading it. 8)
I've got mine AAaaaaaalllll planned out...
Just gotta get my right hand to stop hurting like someone's been stomping on it so I can start doing prelim. sketches.
I think ink pens are the right medium for this...
My request ("learning to fly") should be a fairly easy one, though I would like to see some thought put into it. I have a very specific image in mind how I would do it myself, but it will be interesting to see another interpretation, and if it is at all the same take that I would have on it. ;)
I admit more curiosity on how mine will go. I have ideas for the one I was given now it is a matter of having some time, like more than 1 hour to work on it. Free weekend coming up so that should make a difference.
I am nervous. To the creator of the request (who does not know I have the request) sorry, am not inspired/creative so you'll likely be disappointed.

Up for a little 'monkeying' around with an octopus? Now I don't know what to think.
I have a firm idea for mine...should be fun to do.
I'm interested to see how my request turns out, I have an image, but it'll be fun to see what someone else comes up with.
I'm pretty much finished with mine, but I'm going to hold it for a bit in case I decide to add more detail later.
OH, also, this just occured to me--
The person who's drawing for me (you know who you are), when you send your art in, could you make sure you send it in as a link (not as an image) so I don't see it until the reveal-day like everybody else? 83
Oh whoops I just saw the due date, I probably started on this too early lol. Now I have this drawing I have to keep to myself for like a month and a half :(.

I already sent mine PMed to Diane once I finished it. I'll probably completely forget about the exchange by the time the pic is finally revealed.
I can not believe how quick some of you are!
I have a pretty simplistic style, so that helps :P.

Likewise! I've done concept sketches of the subject and prelim sketches of the detailed areas, but I haven't even started on the actual drawing :-\
Ditto!
'course, I sat at a glbt meeting doing a prelim-draft in my scrap-sketch book, and people were peeking over my shoulder with an "oooo" and "aaaa"... so I feel pretty good about it already :P
I've got to wait till i've got some money to print off some photos before i can even think of starting...I have a rough mental picture of what I want to do though.
I'm waiting on in in the mail myself, should be here monday, and then I can crack my knuckles and really get to work.

no kidding. I just now figured out which models I'm going to use and I still have to make textures lol
I'm still in design concept. oi!
Just cause I'm bored as I finished my pic ages ago I wanna see how everyone else is doing.
Progress report! UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE! :P
But seriously, how are y'all progressing? Is anyone else done?
Going to start taking pictures in the next week...but otherwise no.
Haven't started yet. I've looked up some good reference pictures though, and I think I've got the design worked out. It shouldn't take long, I just have yet to start it!
I can't believe I missed this! >.< Oh well, perhaps there'll be another one at some point... :D Looking forward to see everyone's pictures, anyway!
it will be easy enough once I sit down to do it... just right now got a bit much going on with moving and stuff. I promise I'll have it done by the deadline though!
I have a pose and background idea!
...and absolutely no justifiable reason for why I haven't actually started drawing it. I could say "my life has been crazy," but "crazily uneventful" would be more accurate. In any case, I'm working on getting my life back in some kind of functional order, and should be back in the swing of things soon.
Right!
I haven't done much since the last time (some sketches) but I should have more time this week to work, now that the AWESOME dinner party has turned out f-ing awesome and I no longer have to run around the house going "f! I hope this doesn't fail!.

At long last, I have a sketch done! Now to lineart and color~ I think I'm begining (slowly but surely) to kick this rut I've been in!
How's everybody else doing?
too busy moving at the moment but I haven't forgotten! :)
-.- My hand's been hurting, and I've been in a severely depressed state, and so I haven't done as much as I should have, BUT!!! I am feeling a little creative atm, and will do more preparatory sketches tonight and start forming the end image tomorrow if my hand doesn't flake out on me. :)

YES, it shall be the most mysterious exchange of all!
...speaking of art trades, I rather enjoy art trades, nearly as much as I love art exchanges. Perhaps now that I'm getting back into some kind of art mode, I can do some art trades around here, too? Maybe once I finish some of the art I owe (I have a massive backlog of commissions and art trades from the tail end of the school year/begining of the summer that I need to tackle), I shall open up an art trade board here and see if anyone's up for trading with me.
Update: I finally got around to doing a rough sketch. I thought I knew how I wanted to do it, but I made a last minute change and I like how it turned out. On to the real thing!
Guess what I'm doing Right Now (aside from checking Susan's)...
That's right! I'm working on this.
I'm actually quite happy with what I've gotten done, It's not too big but it's turning out quite good.
I'm running the bleeder pens over it now, doing the pattern and highlight where needed and then a little framework..
After that it's a spot of wine and a little bit of watercolour..
After that it's wait till it's dry, toss on some fixative, and off to the scanner!
So I should be sending my submission to our "host" within the next 48 hours (cause when I start working, I just can't stop 'till I'm done)..
I so need to start mine...if i make enough cash this weekend i'll buy all the bits in need and get started
So it's 9 hours later.
I've taken a short break for eating but mostly I've just sat and worked..
Inking is done, but so is my back.
I'm in so much pain right now I might throw up.
Emotionally though, I'm feeling Really good.
^^ Me and up-side-down-vexing are "pained artists"...
Anyway, one night's sleep and I'm ready to thoroughly abuse my body some more.. where'd I put that little wine bottle...

Oh pssh, you're not causing it, it's self inflicted. I knew I'd hurt and I chose to participate, the responsibility for my suffering is mine.
Wine's an awesome medium, if you go to Deviant Art and look for (I think it is) Pull Down Heaven there's a comic with a tig and a rat that's painted by someone who does a LOT of wine paintings and that person's work is Epic!
UrsulaV level of Epic!

I might say, I'm done! And since the hard part was all in setting up the scene, I will have several views to choose from. I had to claim a teensy bit of artistic freedom concerning the medium in which I work, but I think it depicts what was asked for. Kinda. Sorta. Maybe. I hope... :)

2 hours later it's about 1/3rd done, colours looks super sweet and the concept has come out beautifully.
My hand hurts like hell though; it's literally been about 10 years since I've done a drawing like this and my ligaments aren't used to it!
Residual pain from the three breaks I've suffered in that hand flaring up as well.
*Commiserates with Miniar*
Keep your hand loose when you draw. Your hand should never be too tight when you draw, it should always be lax.
That should reduce or completely get rid of the pain.

(And also, I hope you feel better soon, Miniar. D8)
Almost good again, and back to work.. just a "little bit more" left...
Considering painting the other two things that need "colour" in coffee & tea...
^^
My piece is f-ing elegant..
(course, I'm spotting things wrong with it now... an chewing myself up pretty bad,.. if I had more time I'd toss it out and go all perfectionist on it for 6 weeks before I'd toss it out completely and draw something unrelated... but... )
lol Miniar you sound like me... I've ended up with 5 model files because I kept adding little details and if I had more time I'd add even more. As it is I have 5 hi-res jpg's at a total file size of 1.24 mb.
Crow, is it okay to winzip these all together and send you a link to the file?

I'm not sure I have unzipping software-- last time someone sent me a zip file, it seriously took me like three days to figure out how to open it, and I don't actually recall how I managed to do so in the end. XD Is it possible for you to just upload them as seperate images and send me five links? (If not, you're welcome to try winzipping it... I just don't guarantee I in my infinite technological glory will be able to figure out how to open it.)
no problem, I can just send you the links to 5 separate images. ;)
...of course now I'm rendering the main one over again because I tweaked a bunch of stuff while I was sitting here lol
Guess Who's Finished!!
Scanning, tidying off post scan, and sending the image to our Art-Trade-Manager!
I'm not the last to turn in am I?
Cause that's a clear win for me!
Also, Who's left?
Huzzah! Miniar's has been recieved~
So far Osiris, Jen, me, and Miniar are officially done-- and it sounds like Chloe will be in very short order. Pretty good turn-out so far, considering we still have approximately half a month before the deadline. |D

Me, no worries, I'll probably barely make it and thus, be last.
Hey everyone, I just wanted to rather gleefully announce that six out of eleven participants have now sent in their art-- that's more than half! You're all doing a great job. I can't wait to see the rest!
Awesome ;D
I'm getting really excited to see what people came up with...
and to see what I "get"...
And to see what X thinks of my piece! even if it's far from my best work.. -.-
Will be buying the bits I need next week and will be done next weekend. hehe.
I had never heard of an art exchange before. I can't wait to see the result of this! I'm totally joining the next one. I haven't drawn anything more than a classroom doodle in AGES!
Edit: Oh poop! I just created a deviant art account as coppelia before I realized my brother is on DA all the time and knows my drawings very well.
I've finished drawing mine! Alas, my colored pencils have gone MIA, so coloring it in will be delayed... If worst comes to worst I'll just go buy some more. Can't ever have too many. :P
I'm really excited to see everybody's work!
I haven't drawn in a bit, but whenever the next one happens, I'll be in!
only a few more days now.. ;D
Okay, so... slight delimma. It appears I'm going to be on vacation from June 28 through July 5. You can thank my dad for that one.
In any case, we have two options: If everyone has finished their parts and sent them in to me by June 27 (sunday), I can just post them early. If you don't, that's fine-- you'll just have a slightly extended deadline to finish up your parts, and I will reveal the artwork promptly when I return to internet-land (the evening of July 5 or the morning of July 6, depending on how late I get home). Either way works. 83
Sorry about the inconvenience. D8 When I set up the deadline, I hadn't a clue my dad was going to schedule vacation time for that week-- he usually plans it for the end of July!
Sounds good to me, hope everyone "tries" to get sorted before the vacation, if not, D: I guess we'll have to wait!

Yeah, count me in too! It'd be awesome!
Sorry guys, I'll probably hold you back. I am simply idea-less. So, well, my art isn't going to be very well-done. Apology in advance.
I'm finished! All that's left for me to do is scan it and send it in. That'll be done by tonight.
Damn...I'm such a lazy cow...If I'd seen this two days ago I could have had mine finished...arse.
oh, hello topic, i remember you >_>;;;
i'm done! but i didn't know about the extension xD sooo.....dang.
iFail >:(
creative block coupled with a major attack of the apathies has meant even when I did sit down and try and start something I gave up and deleted the file because I didn't like it.\\
sorry.
I return from vacation-land!
As soon as the last two people turn their entries in, I'll post the board with handouts.
While we're waiting on the last two entries, anyone care to brainstorm ideas for a follow-up exchange? Do we want to do the same thing, or do we want to have a theme, and if so, what kind of theme (usually themes are optional and very open-to-interpretation, just fun guidelines to break up monotony)? If you have any ideas for ways to change things up that would be open-ended enough not to exclude people, feel free to voice your ideas!
A theme would be cool but it might be difficult for some (creative block can be a bitch).

Well, either way, people will have to draw whatever the person they're drawing for requests. Creative block will interfere with that, theme or no theme.
Also, in most exchanges, if there is a theme, it's optional. People wouldn't have to ask for something related to the theme (but they can if they want to), nor are they required to draw something related to the theme. It would be more of a "Hey, if you need ideas, here's a theme!" thing. Mostly to keep people who routinely participate in exchanges from getting bored. 83
A theme might be nice, it would make it a little easier for me to draw.

Hurry up peeps! You've had over a month!
LOL!!! This is why I like you ƃuıxǝʌ
Seriously though... hurry up! :)
I'm curious about all the art.
Oh, if we do themes I suggest the first be "dragons" because dragons are awesome.
I second dragons.
Can't wait to see the finished products!
Dragons! That's pretty much all I drew when I was younger :P I fear I might have lost my touch a bit though :(
Anyway, theme or no theme I'm looking forward to this
Dragons might be a bit specific for a theme-- maybe something more open-ended like "Fantasy"? That could be interpreted in a lot of different ways, and would therefore work nicely as an exchange theme for such a diverse group of artists!
A point you have. It wouldn't be all that interesting in the end if everyone drew a dragon anyway.
Fantasy would be good, leaves it nice and open for interpretation. Perhaps it can be fantasy creatures, it could be dragons or a creature you come up with. Now that'd be fun. :P
Ooh, I second a fantasy/mythical creatures theme! That would be awesome!
Well I figured it could be a little specific since themes aren't required, only provided as free inspiration/ideas/whatever.
True, but we still want it to be a theme that appeals and applies to the majority of participants, since what fun is a theme when only a quarter of the participants are participating in it?
I'm game for "fantasy" as that means I can ask for the same thing again :P!
I'm up for "fantasy" as well. But, be warned, you ask for a dragon and you might get something that resembles an Archaeopteryx. :P
Does anybody know if the people that haven't finished yet, plan to?

Edit: Nevermind, thought it was done.

One has contacted me and I'm fairly certain is working on it.
The other I'm not sure about? (I should probably send a reminder note to make sure...)

I vote for dragons too! And geez I finished mine and had surgery already, I was hoping to see the results by now! If the person doing my request isn't finished it's okay, I did one of those too lol :P
Same, if the person doing mine isn't finished it's okay.
Update time:
Person-number-one has informed me that they're aiming to have theirs done by Sunday and apologizes for the wait. 83
Still waiting on a reply from person-number-two, but I did send them a reminder note this morning. Hopefully I'll hear back soon. (If we haven't heard from them by the time person-number-one finishes, I'll go looking for a substitute artist. I would simply volunteer myself, but the subject matter they were assigned to draw is something that I'm flat-out incapable of drawing.)
could we just post the ones done and then worry about the substitute piece later? I think people are excited to see what's done and many have said they don't mind if it's their piece that's waiting, they just want to see what's done.
Just post the darned artworks already!!! Your all driving me nutsos talking about it all ready :P

My point exactly. :P 8)
Haha I second that. But in reality, I just want to part take in the next one :P
Experience with exchanges on other sites indicates that posting exchange pictures before everything is done rarely ends well. Otherwise I would totally agree to that. D8
However, I can probably set up sign-ups for the next round while we're waiting, so we can get a head-start on that? I can probably have that up sometime tomorrow, if that sounds like a good plan~ Are we in agreement that Fantasy sounds like a good theme?
ALSO, if the pictures for this exchange aren't done by Sunday, I'm calling in substitutes, because it doesn't seem fair to make people wait TOO much longer. Hopefully we won't have to resort to that, but just in case... anyone who's interested in being an in-case-of-emergency substitute, contact me via PM between now and sunday?
But I don't see how substitutes will make the wait shorter. The first peeps got over a month to work on theirs', how long would the substitutes get?
I'll also say if one of the left over pics happen to be mine feel free to post the rest even if that's not finished yet. Nothing says that their work can't be posted later. Honestly I don't think anyone would be like OMGZ I WAS TOTALLY LATE FOR THE DEADLINE AND YOU POSTED WITHOUT ME HOW COULD YOU?!!!
Seriously, they knew how long they had. If they go over why should everyone else have to wait for them to get their butts in gear or have someone else pick up the piece the should have done? If you post the ones finished now it takes the pressure off everyone else who has to finish before everyone gets tired of waiting.
But that's just my thoughts on it. I've not done any art exchanges before, maybe in the serious art circles you HAVE to wait for every piece to be done. *shrugs*
But taking the pressure off of people who need to finish is kind of a recipie for the people who need to finish relaxing and forgetting to do their art at all, and the people they were supposed to draw for not getting anything.
I frequently get called in to substitute for art exchanges on the otehr forum I frequent (mostly because I have no objections to being informed "quick, you have 24 hours to draw a picture, gogogo DRAW!"), and would be glad to volunteer in this case, too, except that I'm fairly certain my rendition of the request in question would look a bit like a 10-year-old drew it. OTL I mean, I could try if no one else has time/energy/desire, but I do not guarantee pretty results.
In any case, since I already informed our last two participants that they have until sunday to finish, it only seems fair to stick with that declaration and deal with it from there. Being the first exchange ever run here, there are sure to be some flaws in the system the first time around.
Next exchange, I'll be sure to plan in advance for this and put some kind of a system in place to prevent long waits from happening again. Right now it's 3:15am and my brain is a bit too groggy to solidify a plan, but I'll work on coming up with something tomorrow-- Suggestions are welcome if you happen to have any!
Well, what's the request? I'm not too good but I can try.
So, what's the latest word? Was a replacement artist needed? I'll also volunteer myself if the request is within my capabilities.
I'm pretty sure we found a replacement artist for the one request that wasn't finished. 83 Hopefully it'll be done, soon~
Sorry I've been so slow about getting the other exchange set up, by the way... I'm still trying to develop a plan for making sure this going-past-the-deadline situation doesn't happen again next time.
Once the contest is set, list all the names and assignments in the first post of the thread and check people off as they finish. Peer pressure is powerful.
Just an idea...
Set 2 deadlines. The deadline for work to be received and the deadline when the work will be posted, perhaps a week apart. If work is not received by first deadline it will automatically be forfeit to sub artist who will have to finish the work by second deadline.
Also, I suggest, for ease, to start a new thread with the new Art Exchange and number it. That way it'll be easier to keep track as time passes
(Art Exchange! 2 for example)

Oh, that's an idea! I think I shall utelize this. Also, I'll probably send out reminder PMs a week or two before the deadline to people who haven't finished, yet.
Also, Jen-- the peer pressure dea would work nicely, except that there's supposed to be a surprise! element to the exchange. However, I could probably
just list names without saying who they were assigned to draw for.
(And yup, that's the plan, Miniar! I agree-- all on the same board would get chaotic. XD)
Okay-- I should have the new exchange board posted as soon as I prepare a revised informative first post~
Thanks for the suggestions, everybody!

I think that would work just as well :). The other suggestions that were made were very good.
Anyone who doesn't finish by the reasonable deadline may not participate in the next exchange. The person it is being done for, if they finish, may continue to the next one but the person not finished still has to finish the first one before doing any more.
