Title: Is T covered
Post by: madzam on May 09, 2010, 04:56:10 PM
So if all goes as planned I will be starting T in about 2 months.

I was wondering if it is covered under my insurance, I live in Michigan

depends on the plan, mine as example covers testosterone cypionate (injectable) and T gel but not other forms. the insurance company should on their web site have a list of "formulary" meds covered.

It might have to be coded "funny" to cover it also, in case there are exclusions on gender identity treatment.

Depends on your insurance.  The only way to really know is to call your insurance company and ask.  Or you can check to see if it's included (or outright excluded) in your policy.

My secondary has it written in to exclude all transgender related care, but my primary has it so that if I meet certain requirements I can get some of the costs of surgery (and possible hormones) covered.

Depends on your individual insurance plan, not the state. Mine isn't covered.

How do you know if your insurance covers it?

You can look at the book they give you, search on the net or call them and ask. I have done all three at one time or another.

If you look at their booklet, first cut to the chase and go to the "exclusions" section, usually near the very end. Don't comb through the whole publication to see if it's listed as something that IS covered.
