Title: Unusual Name Choices
Post by: Ryan on May 25, 2010, 08:10:04 AM
I was watching Jeremy Kyle this morning (British non-faked Jerry Springer is probably a good way to describe it) and there was an FTM on there.
Used to be called Rachel, but is now becoming a boy called Ronaldo. I find this absolutely hilarious. Why would someone with no Portuguese/Spanish heritage call themselves Ronaldo? Honestly, how many British people do you know called Ronaldo?

Another thing that I find with FTMs is that many choose cool and modern names that weren't even around when they were born. Kayden is a good example of that.

What are some of the most unusual names you've heard?

EDIT: Maybe inappropriate/unrealistic were the wrong choice of words. Let's just go with unusual :)

Hell I feel like I'm pushing it with Rowan.

Umm, when you are re-inventing yourself you are allowed to take a new ethnic slant on.
You are in a much better position to do so than when you were born.

Yes, it is a bit of a head-scratcher when people adopt names that are a bit anachronistic.

Still, I wouldn't get too pointed about people's names, most prize them highly.
It seems a bit mean-spirited to single out anybody's name.

Rowan seems to be 2000 onwards. I would have never questioned it though. I assumed it was an older name.

Not that most people would ever think about the age of a person and their name.

EDIT: Not trying to be mean spirited at all. People should choose the name they want rather than worrying about what other people think.
But there's still some corkers out there :P

I don't know if I would call them corkers but I do like the variation of different names beyond what mainstream uses. I think people want something unique. Most of my friends had asked me if my name choice -- Linus -- was because of Linus Torvalds (me being a geek who has a linux background). It wasn't and it makes for an unusual name (I'm actually surprised as to how many people don't know how to pronounce Linus --- Ly-Nus).

I think what is more interesting is the history behind the name chosen and what it means (whether definition or reasoning behind it). While Ronaldo may have Portuguese heritage did they say he wasn't partial Portuguese? Did they ask him why he chose Ronaldo?

I've never heard a name that seemed inappropriate, but there does seem to be a lot of Aiden's, with every spelling variation possible, and names that sound like Aiden, but with another letter in front, Like Kayden, or Jayden.

I've used to know a guy named Kelly, who never changed it, and I have a friend named Bastian, who is constantly explaining that there is no "Sa" in front.  I actually went to elementary school with a Kyle, so I know its appropriate for me and my age.

Jason, Jace, Jase, Jaycen, etc are also very popular amongst transguys.

I know two brothers called Kelly and Ellis. There's also Kelly Slater, the famous surfer, so that's not actually that rare.

I knew a family growing up who had four boys whose actual, legal names were Loki, Doc, and Merlin.  People do choose weird names, and that seems to be somewhat accepted in society (and these guys are in their mid to late 20s now, so it's not a new phenomenon, although it is getting more and more common).  I would never do it, especially since my goal is to blend in as a male and not draw attention to myself.  But that's not everyone's goal and if someone wants to stand out in that way, more power to them!
Title: Re: Unusual Name Choices
Post by: KaleisGood4U on May 25, 2010, 10:28:01 AM
There's a difference between choosing a name that's a little unusual to stand out and being ridiculous and trying to draw attention to yourself...  If you're a little stubby pale British guy who renamed himself Don Juan DeMarco, I don't think you're above being laughed at.  My given name is an androgynous/usually male name I intend to keep.  Post-transition, if someone pointed out there were a lot of teenage cheerleading girls named that in 2000, I'd laugh because it's true, but the name is most commonly associated with the male protagonist of a poem for which I am named.  People need to be a trifle less sensitive.

I grew up with a little boy named Thor. I've met at least two girls named Atilla. I worked with a girl named Sparkle. My friend named their daughter Nova.  (Though I think Nova is actually kinda pretty) My brother's neighbors had a kid named Bane, not Baine, but Bane. (Like the bane of their existence)  Most of the names I've heard people pick for themselves have been pretty normal sounding in comparison.

I personally have never liked verb names. But that's just my pet peeve. Dash, Slash, Chase, etc.

I think though, if a name clicks, it clicks. If it's unusual then oh well.

I made sure my name was age appropriate.  If I decided that Jaden or even Justin was my name, it would be odd.  Not many (if any!) men my age named Jaden or Justin.

Much easier for younger guys to have trendy names, because that is very common these past few decades.

Some are a bit out there I guess but whatever if the person likes the name.
Loads of people think mine is unusual, when I first heard of it 5/6 years ago I didn't think it was weird or made up. Then someone told me a woman on Grey's was called Addison which I found weird cause it sounds really masculine to me.

Actually some random guy at work today said my name was cool. A welcome change from the usual baffled looks on peoples faces haha.

Oh & I missed the Jeremy Kyle episode but my mate told me about it and he also found it hilarious that he named himself Ronaldo.

My godchildrens' names are Morgan, Logan, Jordan [all girls] and Orion [boy].
Of course, their mother went to Evergreen State, so it was expected.

I actually have gotten some odd responses to naming my son Keith, as people have told me its not "modern" enough.

I chose Aaron as my male name, because it kept my initials the same [my birth name also begins with A], and it was a strong Jewish name, allowing me to express not only my male identity, but my Jewish identity as well.

The unique or unorthodox names don't faze me nearly as much as the unorthodox spellings do.
Having grown up with an oddly spelled birth name, I know that while it seems unique and fun at the time, it can actually be a pain in the butt when people consistently mispronounce or misspell your name.

I agree that's funny... If I'd run into him I'd probably start speaking in a heavy Spanish (w/e) accent until he shouted he was British in a lovely, posh accent.. And then of course I'd go 'HA!'...

Either way, I ocassionally quirck my brow at some names - usually when someone plays the whole alternate universe spelling game. Sure it's fine to pick a 'cool name' - go for it, but just because a yellow shirt looks freaking awesome doesn't mean it will look good on you... *shrug*

I hear ya, bro.  I went through that same thing.  My mom's name is Lori and for some reason she decided that all her girl's names were going to end in "i" like her name.  Only one of the four of us got her name spelled normally.  The rest of us had the spelling of our very normal-for-the-time names mangled to get the "i" at the end.  It's annoying to have everyone spell my name wrong when it's such an insanely common girl's name for my age.  AND I could never get any of those cool things in gift stores that came with your name printed on them (key chains and snow globes and magnets and little plastic silverware-- so much cool stuff I couldn't have).

Just watched this Jeremy Kyle episode on the itvplayer. It wasn't a particually detailed story, just seemed like they needed something with shock value to fill in the time at the end of the show. Basically a bisexual girl was in a hetro relationship until her boyfriend turned out to be MTF. Then she started a lesbian relationship with a girl she knew until the girlfriend turned out to be FTM.

Yeah the guy did not look like a Ronaldo, and to dissapoint no_id he didn't have a posh accent. Seemed chavvy, like most people who go on The Jeremy Kyle Show.

What do you guys think of the name Edsel? I saw it on this miniseries about Henry Ford...it was his son's name.  He named a car after him after he died and it failed miserably because the grille supposedly looks like a vagina.  I think thats fitting!

My mother decided to misspell a relatively normal (though unused for my age group). Or maybe my dad did it. I don't care. Either way it's getting changed, because there is no way i'm keeping 'gwyndallyn' for too long.  ::)

Edsel's one that, if I didn't know the back story, I'd assume was an older girl's name. It's sort of reminiscent of Ethel. Also, the car was hideous and Ford was a Nazi.

It's up to you, but I wouldn't want it anywhere near my name.

That movie was crazy stuff.  But yeah, thinking out loud, I probably don't want a name with such a dodgy history.  Maybe the older version, Etzel.  And only for an interesting middle name. I don't want anyone to think I'm some sort of neo Nazi.

I think I'm weird in that I really really like odd names... And odd spellings. I keep a notebook filled with odd names that people I encounter have...
For me, my mother decided to go for my name with a European spelling and pronunciation. ...After a while I liked being able to correct people. It annoyed them and I found it quite amusing.
...Which is ironic since my male name (James) is insanely common but it fits me. Even though my mother likes harassing me that it's 'too common!'. ::)
I still went with odd middle names (two middle names for the win) though... Mihael Kai. Maybe I just can't make up my mind about whether I'm odd.

My Mum chose rather unusual names too. My older sister's name (she's 25 this year) is our grandmothers nickname 'Lylie' and mine (Kestin) well she chose it out of a baby name book. I have forever been mistaken for Kirsten, even when I say it very clearly, people still get it wrong.

Thankfully since passing as a guy it happens less as people don't assume its the common female name when they hear it.

My father was going to name me Zoltan, because it's a family name and it was supposed to be his, although his father had a last moment change of heart and decided on Jeffrey.  We have Hungarian heritage, though, so it isn't entirely nonsense.  I guess that's a little different of a situation, though; it's a family name, and it was going to be mine had I been born male.  I'm not sure if I'll go with that one, though.

If I took a letter off my birthname I would have had a male name.
I honestly find that hearing my birthname fills me with disgust. I dunno why, I just hate it. So I really had to go with something completely different.

I had a really nice birthname so I don't mind hearing it as long as its not associated with me. It was unisex too but I still needed to change it because it didn't feel like me.

I chose Kohitsu (most people just call me Koh) because it is Japanese, and I'm sick and tired of old average joe male names. Kohitsu is an ancient art form of calligraphy that dates back to the 15th century. How's that for an unusual name? lol

I'll just come right out and say my birth name cause I don't have a problem with any of you knowing.  My birth name was Brittni.  I had no problem with it until I was middle school and it became associated with Brittney Spears and every time I said my birth name and STILL every time I say it (because I still present as female most of the time) people say "oh Brittney Spears" and I just hate being associated with that slut.  Even when I was in Germany people who barely spoke English would call me Brittney Spears.  I hated it.  Not to mention all the Brittany/Brittni/Brittany/whatevers I've known have all been fat (me included) so part of me associated it with a slut and the other part associates it with being fat and unpopular.  So I just don't like it.  I've told my mom I wished she would have named me Devin even as a girl because it can be both, although I haven't asked anyone to call me it yet.  The past few days I've been contemplating putting it out there, though.  I'm considering just changing my facebook name to Devin and putting it out there that way, but I don't know if that would be too abrupt or not.

My name's Konnor Joseph. I kept my same initials and basically the same middle name. I don't hate my girl first name, but it's not me. My name now gets mis-spelled a lot, people usually spell it Conner, but I've dealt with having an unususal first name my whole life so I don't really care anymore. I'm just glad to be called something masculine now.

I guess I chose an unusual name but it was because my birth name starts with "v" and "v.insertsurname" is my signature, so I thought it'll be easier for me lol ;D I also like my initials xD But people always go cool name when I introduce myself, so I'm not too fussed :3

Do most people choose middle names? I never really thought of choosing one since mine's not in English though it is on my birth certificate.

I did... but it was more of a shift than anything else.
[and it keeps my name neutral enough to not make people go "WTF" when they see my legal sex and full name]

I've never heard a name that seemed inappropriate, but there does seem to be a lot of Aiden's, with every spelling variation possible, and names that sound like Aiden, but with another letter in front, Like Kayden, or Jayden.

Anything but Maiden, I suspect.

There was a girl in my class called Lee, and she had an older brother called Kim. I thought at the time it was unusual, obviously their parents liked unisex names.

There was a rash of "Kim" for boys after Kipling published his book by the same name. It went on for a long time. I don't know why it started to become more of a girls' name. But I guess that happens a lot.

I've been trying to think of a new name for myself. My English name can be made male by dropping a letter, but I get worried that people will think I just made a typo if I do that. My Chinese name sounds horribly like "failing" (lol), so that's got to go.

Can I claim Slartibartfast?  >:-)

My birth name is Jasmine...but I can see a lot of jokes coming out of that name already, one being Jas-man, emphasizing on the whole man part of it.

I chose to be called Harlee  8) dunno why actually. I always liked the name Harley but whenever people said "heeeeey harleeeyyyyy" on MSN, I always thought the "y's" looked gross. So I changed it to just double "e"...so it now looks like "heeeeeey harleeeeee" much better! Not much of an excuse but Im a letter freak tho. I hate using exclamation marks after "t's" and "l's", and if just one word has to use a line all of its own, ill completely format the entire paragraph to make it perfect ;D

I think person with the most unusual name I've ever encountered was an old man named Eliezer Krumbein.  I thought that was just great!   :D

I also went to school with a Zoltan.  The name always made me think of Voltron:Defender of the Universe.  But he was a pudgy, timid little boy who carried his teddy bear everywhere he went.

Of course, mine's pretty unusual, too: Jamison Hadley.  Very Fake-British.  :D  But then, my birth name was very unusual, as well, yet similar enough to some common names that I was forever having to correct people.  ::)

I knew a kid named Tynner (pronounced with a long "i") when I was young. I think the name is Norwegian and actually translates to "paint thinner" in English, but I've seen it as a first and a last name on the Web.

I've never met a trans guy with that name. :D

Yess! It was indeed a catholic school. Though I only met Kai in High school, and he was so cool, he had long, bright red/ginger hair and it was awesome, haha.

Pff, I actually have a character called Gabe, because I'm still unsure whether or not to call him the full version. But I've never made a character who was me in boyfrom, though some of them have my traits. 0:

I have no idea what my parents would of called me had I been born male. By my dad wanted to call be Tabitha, and my mum wanted to call me Tula. But she decided on my name now which is almost identical to my sister's name.

I actually kind of like my birthname, Miranda, because its not very common, but its sooo feminine.   I think its more common as a last name though.   My grandfather was very persistent about trying to get my parents to name me Mellibaya for a while.  Kind of pretty I guess, but definitely a head scratcher.

I have a cousin who was named Brynn, and she legally changed it to Brynley because she got tired of people thinking it was a guys name.

I chose Kyle from my middle name, Kate.  Just switched some letters around.

I used to go by Adan and now go by Cassidy or Sid for short. My brother and his fiancée Vincent helped me pick out a name. They're my pack/family so I figured it made sense to have them help me find a name that truly suited me. I like that it's unusual and that it's technically a unisex name. I also like the fact that it's actually got several different varieties of nicknames I never had that with the name my parents gave me it was the most common most feminine uncreative name ever and then there's *cringe* my middle names. Which were different, but sounded terrible together. I'm going for Cassidy Michael (Insert absurdly Irish last name here.)

We actually just decided on the name last night thus the reason this wasn't posted sooner.

I like Bastian too, its an awesome name. I changed my name 2 years before i even thought about transitioning to Kade, it just popped into my head one day, and i  loved it, its only recently i discovered it was a boys name. Funny though, before transitioning people mistook it for kate, now they often mistake it for kane.
I kinda wish i hadnt changed my name then, because now after being on T for nearly a year and feeling very male, i just wanna be called Ben. I cant really put my family and friends thru another name change though, lol. So Kade it is.

In response to the OP: I thought of doing a simmilar thing because I have been using Alessandro, the Italian for Alexander, as an internet name for ages.  I have chosen to go with the English though, but of course if I did move to Italy Alexander Micheal can naturally become Alessandro Marcello and I still get to introduce myself as Alessandro over there.  So it works out.  I think "Ronaldo" might be a stretch though!  (Cos it makes me think instantly that he was a footy fanboy and just named himself after two great footballers! ;D)
