Title: Underactive thyroid
Post by: Dan on May 27, 2010, 01:42:54 PM
Hi guys - sorry if this has been asked before by someone else but my blood test results today have come back with my thyroid being underactive. I'm due to start T on the 23rd June and am worrying in case this interferes in any way. Does anyone know?

Cheers, Dan

I have been dx'd with hypothyroidism and taken meds for it for a little over a year so far. I take synthroid for it, and my thyroid levels are fine now.

When I first saw my T doc...I wrote down all the meds I take. He asked if I had hypothyroidism, I said yeah, and that was pretty much the end of the conversation. Afaik...hypothyroidism has no effect on your T dose. T might change your metabolism, and if it does, your doc will test that on bloodwork and change your thyroid meds accordingly. I take other meds in addition to T and thyroid stuff...trust me, there's guys who have alot worse medical probs and still take T.

After a bit of a Google I've found this:
"testosterone can increase thyroid binging globulin....perhaps then leading to symptoms of hypothyroidism"

Maybe something to look into.

My blood tests have shown my thyroid slightly low on some days and on the low end of normal other days. My doc decided to treat that and I just started the synthetic thyroid hormone today. He says there should be no problem, and so does my own research. It's just another hormone being replaced to give you a normal hormone level. I am curious if mine will give me more energy for exercise, and thus help me build muscle and strip off estrogenic fat deposits faster. (I've been on T for six months and my shoulders have broadened very noticably and I'm growing a pretty good beard, but I still have a girl-butt, dammit.)

On thyroid meds for being hypo, you might lose weight initially. I did, then it leveled out. I didn't notice more energy, but I wasn't too lackluster to begin with.

Thanks for the replies. I'm relieved it shouldn't affect my starting T next month. I'm actually quite relieved it has come up on the blood tests that my thyroid is underactive as the last year and a bit I have struggled with my weight and had no energy with some days going straight to bed after work. I thought I was just getting old!!!! Will be good to get my energy back as I enjoy cycling but just haven't been able to manage it lately.

I don't think it matters.  I have had an underactive thyroid since birth and have to take thyroxine daily and although I havent started T yet, my Doctor didn't say that would be a problem.  You have to have blood tests to watch your thyroid levels and T levels so its all monitored anyway.
