Title: Told My Step-Grandma~
Post by: Crow on June 04, 2010, 12:25:42 PM
A happy post, for once!

I went out to tea with my step-grandma, today. We had a lovely lunch and talked a lot-- I've been open to her for quite a while about my involvement with the LGBT community, so I was talking about my school's LGBT group and she asked very matter-of-factly whether I identify as lesbian or transgender. What a perfect opportunity! So I explained my situation, and she was SO great about it all. 83

I gave her kind of a watered down version of the situation for now, because I'm still in a bit of a decision-making stage and didn't want to cause unnecessary confusion, but I did tell her that I'm planning on talking to a counselor about gender, soon, and that I'm contemplating some kind of physical transition. I also explained that I feel like I'm in between genders, but that I feel more like a feminine boy than a masculine girl (which she not only accepted but agreed with). She's concerned about the prospect of a physical transition, but not because it bothers her-- she's just worried about the health risks and told me to be careful and make sure I'm aware of the risks. She asked me to keep her posted with any updates, which I certainly intend to do~

I'm so glad to have her on my side, now. <3 My family has been, in the grand scheme of families of transpeople, pretty darned accepting... but my mom and brother have been kind of discouraging to deal with, and it's really refreshing to have someone available to me who is encouraging and accepting instead of just begrudgingly tolerant.

Congratulations, that's great! ;D  Perhaps she can become an ally when talking to your parents?

Lee (my step-grandma) is pretty amazing~ She's one of my favorite people in the whole world, so it's really a relief that she's taking the gender thing well. 83 (Not that I expected her not to-- but sometimes these things are hard to predict, so I'm still relieved.)

I was pretty surprised when she brought it up, though! I mean, she knows I've been romantically involved with girls, before, and I've dropped a fair share of gender related hints (mentioning transgender characters/friends/reading material/events, wearing men's shirts and ties, etc.)... but it never occured to me she would guess it. She was astonishingly really knowledgeable about transgender issues-- she knew not all transgender people transition all the way, and knew quite a bit about hormones.

I think the fact that Lee knows and is accepting will make it easier to tell my dad. Maybe. Hopefully? 8D;
