Title: My First Dress
Post by: Little Darkling on June 07, 2010, 09:35:39 AM
So.

I had organized to go shopping with a friend of mine from an acting class, but she got called into work due to unforseen circumstances, so I was stuck with some money and a trip into the city. I'm normally deathly afraid of entering clothing shops by myself, and it's nobody's fault but my own. Generally, the fact that the shopkeepers tend to be around my age, either in or just fresh out of highschool, it unnerves me and I find it difficult to keep steady. So I avoid shops unless I have an 'escort' to do the talking for me.

But I had really set my mind on buying a dress...

So I was going through this cycle of randomly entering shops, and leaving soon after, unsure of why I felt so damned sick and out of place. Then, as I was walking along the arcades, pretty much preparing to go home, I saw a group of people that I recognized. They wouldn't have been mean to me or anything, I'm sure, but it was just a conversation I wasn't ready to have. So I ducked into this random store, and found a dress on sale. 80 -> 30 dollars seemed to be a great price that I couldn't argue with, and the dress just seemed to suit me very much so. With a shawl and a belt added, I quite like it.

I wore it to my acting class over the weekend, and it felt great to wear something that was entirely mine; not something that had been picked out for me, or purchased by an over-zealous partner, or hand-me-down'd...and I'm glad I bought it alone, I'd say. Somehow, it makes it feel more like it's mine.

Anyone want to share any of their interesting or scary shopping trips? :p

:)

First time in DSW Shoes trying on girl shoes with my then GF.  I have on guy clothes, and kneehighs under my jeans.  We go over to the women's shoes and I start trying things on.  Over comes one of the sales ladies with the "Can I help you?" question...

I panic and say "No!  No we are just fine!" and my GF looks at me like I had grown another head, and starts laughing and waves the lady away.

They knew exactly what we were doing over there - trying on shoes for me.  It was not such a big deal but it just threw me into a total panic!

I like your dress!  Very flirty!

I was worrying about the sizing but happily it fits well. I want the shoes on the pic to go with it now too hehe. Now I need to get the confidence to use actual shops instead of the net.

Actual shops are really scary, from the few times I've been in them to get clothes. :p

Helps a lot to have an understanding friend come along to sort of make you feel tougher. I don't put any blame on the workers, but when I'm alone in clothing shops I tend to feel just absolutely terrified. The place where I bought my dress from in the end was operated by some rather maternal ladies who were very kind and broke most of my insecurities down. :p

And I love that dress! It's the sort of thing I'd certainly wear, I just wanted something dressy for my first time around I guess!

I know that feeling. You purchased your cloth first time. It's not for women, but of you. The first one should be momorable and beautiful, at least to your eyes. I think the black dress really matches well with you.

As nowadays I purchase all kinds of women's dresses by myself, the thrill is not so much strong. Just interested in price, design and size. I do not care even they know I am a dad. Sometimes I go shopping women's dresses and cosmetics with my little daughter, and she always shouts "dady! dady! dady!".

During my initial phase, my wife helped me pick up a stylish one. I always thought like "those skirts are too long", but later I realized that I tend to want too short ones, which can be excessive to look stylish.

Depending on the culture and society, it could be unusual, but not any kind of crime or shame for men to purchase women's clothes and cosmetics. It is so simple. Oh. And, sometimes, they ask me whether it is for me, and I reply yes.

Most retail stores anymore are operating on such a thin margin that they no longer have the luxury to care about who is buying what, only that they are buying something.
