I've been growing my hair from scratch for four months and only have 2 inches of hair and my goal is 23 inches , how long did it take for your hair to reach its goal?
Hair takes a long time to grow, but I heard someone on this forum suggest a herb that's supposed to help. Been meaning to try it out :) I've been growing mine out for about 2 1/2 years or longer. It's past the shoulders and when it's straightened it's even longer :)
Mine is going on about 2.5 years and sits on my shoulders, but when straightened it hits a little past the top 1/4 of my back.
Hair varies person to person.
I am almost to my shoulders in 8 months.

This was taken in 2008, and I started growing my hair in 2003. So, it took about 4 years to reach at this length.
But, I had my hair cut short in 2009, as a hair dresser warned that my long hair may precipitate hair loss.

If you find out let me know.
I was shaving my head up until 6 months ago, so that sounds about the same as mine.
It varies... both person by person, and by age.
When I was younger I grew my hair out several time. From crew cut to half way down my back took just 18 months. These days the same thing would probably take at least two years.
my damn hair is taking it's sweet time as well. I don't want it long though...but it still seems to be taking ages!
I've had long hair since I was 15 And I did grow it out to feel like a girl XD it worked too if only I'd tried to transition then I would have gotten away with it. :(
although awhile ago I can share some things.
what you've described sounds about right most pepole it grows at a rate of half an inch a month although it speeds up during pregnancy and slows down with age soo 23 inches (Which is actually even longer than mine at 18 inches ribcage length) and mine is pretty much at it's terminal length because I abuse it sometimes when I get bored with it XD
would take 46months for you assuming no trims or breakage more realistically 55 Assuming your hair can even go that long. If it dose then congrats you can be one of the girls I envy. :)
There are many things you can do to avoid it stopping growth at certain spots, First reason why it dosen't grow to a certain length is breakage, Which is my stopping hurdle, Hair drying it, Hair Dye, Brushing it when wet, heat treatments all damage it. My Hair sin as it were would be the dye.
What can I say? when I was younger it was a nice Raven black now it's just dreary brown. Anyway don't do those things towel dry which I know can be a pain if your in a rush and find a good conditioner that prevents breakage.
At longer lengths your more likely to encounter some problems washing it mostly in my case the hair ends up slightly more greasy at the roots and dry at the tips, So try to get a "mixed mood" hair shampoo if a similar thing happens to you avoid over-conditioning the roots.
If you have an unusual reaction to HRT or just aren't on it be aware you will have to wash it alot most likley T covers ->-bleeped-<- in grease it's so gross ¬_¬ but I know some girls just have greasy hair anyway without T. And that's fine but if you should avoid unnessercily washing it because washing away from of those useful oils that prevent oxidative stress from the environment and make it brittle and also be Aware HRT can totally change the personality of your hair... It did with me and there was an acclimatisation period of figuring out what it needed.
There's a final thing diet. I've never needed it but girls I know with longer hair than me swear by certain diets to get it there. These dies vary but usually they have in common is they are rich in Vitamin D, Fish oil, And foilic Acid.
judging by how quickly my dark roots show up under the longer honey blonde I'd say it basically grows 1/8 inch per week but as it grows and then rests it may take years to get much total length...I got mine to grow down onto my shoulder a couple of years ago but didn't like it so I settle on a shortish bob about one inch above jawline and let it grow down about and inch below jawline before cutting it.
I would love to have a thick curly head of hair like my sister but no chance.
I could sit on mine. Somewhere on these boards I was told to cut it so I cut off 2 feet worth. I have regrown about 1 foot of it so it hits my waist again. It is oilier on top but you only wash the top anyway. Hair oil treatments for the rest. Don't use blow dryers, dyes or perms and it will grow about 1/2 inch per month on average.

3 years and still not happy with the length (hair started out as an army cut).
Wow. Considering the fullness of your hair, I think that's pretty fast!
A little over a year has only gotten me an average 4 inches or so I think. It's hard for me to gauge since the hair on the crown of my head grows much more slowly than everything else. I'll just be happy when the hair rooted there is long enough to rest on top of everything rooted below it.
Mine grows really quickly and I have to have it cut every six weeks to keep it the length that I have now (recent avatar pic) Its also naturally curly but I have never tried to straighten it as I like it the way it is. When wet I just comb it through and let it dry, no hair dryer or it goes like a frizzy mass.
Its took about a year to grow from a short crew cut to what I have now, but I just keep it this length as I'm happy with it.

I recall, once being told by a lecturer in hairdressing that hair length is genetic. This was in the early 70s when it was really fashionable to have your hair really long.
It seems that for some people, growing their hair longer than the back of the neck is impossible.
It seems that genetic women tend to be able to grow their hair longer than others. Also, if your hair is naturally straight, another genetic trait, that it tends to grow longer than if it is naturally wavy.
Mine is very wavy. Even if I stretched it, it would never grow longer than the back of my neck. Seems this is the reason.
My sister, incidently also could not grow her hair very long, though she reached a couple more inches than me.
Personally, I think women with short hair look really good.
Mine's been growing since August of 09. Definitely not fast enough. I make do with the short hair styles though for now =)
Mine goes from short to slightly past waist length in three years. No matter what it doesn't get more than a few inches past my waist. My hair is slightly wavy, I have noticed that my brother's hair which is a bit thicker than mine grows slower and has a shorter terminal length.
Interestingly enough I have noticed that both my fingernails and hair grow quicker and stonger when I eat fresh fish regularly. Nothing else seems to make much of an impact on my hair growth as far as diet is concerned, though starving myself does slow it down a bit.
I just recently read that it's very rare for someones terminal length to be any shorter than shoulder length regardless of race or hair texture.
I just cut mine off again, heh. I grow it out in the winter months (which in Wa state is October - June lol). It takes me ten months to grow mine to the top of my shoulder blades.

How short do you cut it?
My hair is slowing down. 2 years ago had I left my hair alone for about a year it would probably reach my shoulders. Haven't cut it in almost 6 months now and it's barely not even passed my ears. (awkward unmanageable middle length)
Also my hair is thinning on the top and my hairline is receding! I'm only 20! I blame my dad >:( That baldy.
The point is it's a combination of genetics, hygiene (too much washing is bad for hair as well), and general health. Low metabolism = slow hair growth.

if you're transitioning it might also be stress and hormones.
better start saving for transplants.
At 5 inches! After 3 hair cuts in 7 months, since being completely buzzed cut... I have decided to grow it out, and believe me, it is long. Really love it so far, and if I style it, it is 'passable' hair wise.
My hair goes a little past the bottom of my armpit and when I straighten it, it goes down further. I've been growing it for 2 years now and it seems to grow really fast when I cut it but after it grows for a while...It seems to slow down.

In agreement with LordKAT.
My hair has grown from the beloved "boot camp" military cut, down to my collar bones in approximately 2 years. Though that's not record speed I imagine, I trim my hair just to keep it even and cut split ends about every four months. Normally use shampoo and conditioner twice a week.
Another thing I have started to do in the past year is avoid the shampoo/condition/blow-dry at the salon/hairstylist. But that's just me.
Best wishes with your hair care!

My hair grows quickly in every dimension except down. I end up looking like a loo brush in about a month :P ??? :'(
My elder sister always wanted curly hair, I always wanted straight. Guess what happened ::)
Cindy
Funny how that works, most people I know want the opposite hair of what they got when it comes to curls.
I try scalp massages and was hoping the summer whether would speed up the process but, as of yet nothing dramatic has happened.
