Back in 2002, an article entitled Denny's: A Diversity Success Story: "A Decade Ago, The Restaurant Chain Denny's Was Nearly.... The article began this way:
So began the April 3, 2002 Associated Press article recounting the miraculous turnaround Denny's made after it settled a highly public $54 million class-action lawsuit. After reading this article, of course I was impressed. But I was also curious. How did they do it? What programs did they put in place to effect such rapid change in such a large organization? To answer these questions, I went straight to the mastermind behind the miracle: Ray Hood-Phillips, Chief Diversity Officer at Denny's.
During our conversation, Hood-Phillips outlined the steps Denny's took to transform their embattled company into a model for inclusion. The key, she said, was taking "a holistic approach to diversity" making both cultural and structural changes.
