Title: Online games?
Post by: stephanie on August 08, 2005, 12:26:55 AM
Just wondering if anyone played any online RPGs, like Star Wars Galaxies, Matrix Online, World of Warcraft, anything like that.  I have an active SWG account and a temporarily funding-impaired MxO account.

I am currently missing my Saris from Horizons a lot, but not playing currently.

If my CD key worked, I would play Colin McRae Rally 2005 online. For some reason, my CD key doesn't work, so oh well.

I used to play Call of Duty online, and BattleField 1942 Desert Combat, but neither of those games appeal at the moment.

Been playing World of Warcraft since beta myself.  Ex-EQ'er and have dabbled in City of Heroes but that one isn't active at the moment.  :)

My main char is Everquest 2, Toyotomi 46 (of 50 levels) (Bard) Dirge on Innothule server guild leader of Reckless Abandon (181 member average level 36). Any are welcome to meet or even join the guild if active.

I played Everquest 1 , Toyotomi 65 Bard on Luclin server (formerly Veeshan) which is still active but I play seldom.

City of Heroes , Huntress Kendra leve 20 Machine Gun Blaster

Anarchy Online , Spinedead level 112 Meta Physist

played Daoc up to teens, Guildwars, LineageII (love the DE models), and Final Fantasy XI (hated it, so empty and gray, depressing)

Forgot to mention my own characters.

SWG -
Bejin Ni'kr, Architect on Tatooine, Naritus server (used to be main char, now I dabble with all of them)
Safri Sniddle, Entertainer on Naboo, Starsider server
Keedrin Seonit, fledgling cook and tailor on Naboo, Corbantis server

MxO -
Track, Syntax server
Azraelle, also Syntax
S0nar, also also Syntax (love how I can have three characters per server now)

City of Heroes -
Had a character named the Crescent Shadow, level 17 something or other.  Never liked that game because it was nothing but fighting the NPCs over and over and over...

When I was in college we used to play a lot of bookshelf games like Diplomacy or Napoleon at Waterloo and such. No RAM, ROM Accelerator cards or other expensive computer equipment. The games cost maybe 15 bucks and anyone could play who was in the same room with you. Diplomacy was a great game. It consisted of 7 countries each with 2 armys and one navy except for Britain which had 1 army and two navy's and Russia which had two navy's and two army's. The object of the game was to capture 18 supply centers. there were no dice or other chance type objects for making moves. You negotiated with other players to get them to support your army's or navy's to capture other players supply centers. You were free to make any treaties with any or all players if you wished and you could make a deal with a player and then turn around and stab them in the back much as in real life.
You could spy on your opponents as they were making their deals. These were known as diplomacy periods and were supposed to only last 15 minutes, although they rarely did since various palyers would be scattered across various parts of the house and getting everyone back into the same room took some doing as in the journey to the living room players would peel of in a corner to make last minute deals. You wrote down your orders for your troop movements and once everyones orders were written you read them out loud. after the reading whatever conflicts occured would be resolved. You took supply centers through superior force. All countries being equal you had to forge alliances.

We used to play all night. Drink wine smoke cigarettes, laugh. The sun would come up and we would record the positions of the armys and such. Diplomacy could be played in a night but more often took days. Which only meant that you had a rather extended diplomacy session until the next time everyone got together. This would involve wining dining and bribing to various degrees and levels. We took our diplomacy very seriously. ;D

Now everything is on computers. You have to spend thousands of dollars to get the latest greatest whatever. Pay through the nose monthly for an account so you can play others and you never truly see or interact with the people you are palying with. Plus everything is in a constant state of upgrade. The software is upgraded and then the computer has to be upgraded to the software, then some of your other software is not compatible with the upgraded computer requiring upgrading that software only to discover you have to further upgrade the computer to the software and your good until the next generation.

Quite frankly I think the board game is much better more fun involves actual face to face interaction with your friends instead of a glowing CRT and most importantly doesn't require constant upgrade. I don't see how anybody trying to transition even has the money to keep up with some of these online games. But each to their own.

I miss the good old days! :(

Achaea - Dreams of Divine Lands (http://www.achaea.com) = not currently playing, too time consuming.

Maple Story (http://www.mapleglobal.com) = low level Rogue, and a soon-to-be Bowman.  This game is entertaining, even though it's an obvious monster romp.

I'm with you Cassie,

Diplomacy was one of my favourites along with Kingmaker which is based on the War of the Roses in England. I found the interaction amongst the players between moves made the games rather than the use of more cold use of online computers.

Guess we're just showing our age.

I remember Kingmaker! That was one of our favorites too. We had one guy whose name was Norville. One of his ancestors was involved in that war. That was a great game. And then of course if you didn't have days to play there was always RISK and of course Stratego if you were tired of chess. You're right though, I guess were just a couple of old fogies. lol  ;D

hugs,

Age has nothing to do with it. The query was online games :P

There are numerous board games (RISK, Aggravation and UNO in no particular order) and P&P games (AD&D2nd edd, GURPS, Shadowrun, Torg, Vampire, Werewolf, etc. also in no particular order) I like. Personally I favor computer games (online or not) because they are there when I want to play. I can't say that about off line games.

Achaea looked quite interesting; I was playing Mystical MUD (http://www.mysticalmud.com/) for a while until Everquest caught my attention.

QuoteThe query was online games.

True enough Kimberley, I got off on a tangent. I do like the online games too. My favorite used to be Space Armada. Great play lots of strategy as well as just plane old bang bang shoot em up without all the graphic blood. I like my graphic violence in the movies better than my games. Unfortunately the game only played in DOS mode and Microsoft took that capability out of the operating system. I think we need another movie sequel, Kill Bill 3. lol

One of these days I'm going to get the newer version that will play on my newer computers.
Mostly these days I play Hoyle casino. Really good graphics. You can design your own player avatar from a wide selection of face shapes, lips, eyes, noses, hair color, style. That's a lot of fun in itself You can select other computer players but their chatter is very annoying so I just turn it off.

Well gallery got busy, gotta cut this short.

How'd I miss the MMO thread? lol

Played EQ(1) for about 5 years on Lanys...  briefly tried guild wars, and city of heros...  Currently I sorta play WoW with Jaycie.... (IE: she plays daily... I log my butt in maybe once every few weeks lol)

Basically I view the monthly fee as our entertainment budget... we don't go to the movies, we don't drink, so $15/month for nightly entertainment is a small price for me...   you can spend $30 per night at a bar lol... or one trip to the movies (with tickets, food, etc) can run you $50....

QuoteAchaea looked quite interesting; I was playing Mystical MUD for a while until Everquest caught my attention.

Achaea is one of the better (read: best) MUD's around.  The main reason I stopped playing was because I didn't have time to play anymore.  The other reason is that there was a big change in the political structure of the game, so things were really hectic.  But it has probably settled down by now.

The class system used to be "owned" by the guilds.  And some of the guildleaders were abusing their power by refusing people class based on the suspicion that these people were ALT accounts who were trying to go rogue and create mass havoc.  But since lots of legitimate players were being denied class, Serapis decided to strip the guilds of their power (he warned them two years previously he would do this in such a scenario).

It's rather unfortunate that had to happen, because the guild system was what made Achaea unique from every other MUD around.  But the current free-class system makes you much less reliant on other guild members (in fact you don't even have to join a guild now).  Although some of the guilds have lost their momentum along with their power, there are a few really good guilds around.  Basically, all the guilds who actually role-play.  And that's where the fun is at.

How did I miss the MMOG thread too!

Since 2000 I have played or beta tested 20+ MMOGs.

For the last four years, up until August of this year, MMOGs have been life, life has been MMOGs, I have spent virtually every waking moment in them playing female characters, avoiding 'real life'.

At the time of posting I am active in...

EQ - E-Marr (dont really play this now though)
EQ2 - Najena
SWG - Farstar
MxO - Syntax
CoH - Triumph and Protector
DAoC - Percival

Send me an IM if you play on any of my servers :)

Stephanie, I will look you up in MxO if your still playing.

In EQ2 I found a GLBT guild on another server, have thought about moving, but they havn't replied to my mails.

Sure thing!  I'm still very active with one of the greatest factions in the game.  Look for either Track or Azraelle on Syntax (my two characters, since we're now allowed a total of three).

I just found a cool game that has everything in it I liked from the old games I played and more things I had never thought. Especially the single player mode. Its a new game , not commercially popular, but has many features far surpassing it's giant Sony /Blizzard and other competitors. I found this browsing through a mmorpg site that listed several games. After being frustrated from some really bad games I demoed, I came across this one and was very very suprised.

Minions of Mirth
*has online (play one character with others)and single player mode (single player mode you play a group of characters on your own server)
*has great armor and loot even at lower levels
*when you complete some quests it opens monsters you can play as a character in the monster realm
*single player mode you can set up all 6 characters to  cast spells and fight simultaneous just by hitting the number keys
*while graphically you only see one character (which you pick of the 6), you have all the other 5 characters there  really fighting and casting spells.
*has a good side , evil side, and monster side each side you can have up to 24 characters per side (most games have like 8) and in single player mode, you can select which characters are in the party, and even switch out in game by going to the inn, without logging out.
*has permanent stat raising potions that drop from any monsters killed, also has a skill point  system that raises each level,  that lets you buy advanced skills, and even some scrolls drop from monsters killed that if you read gives you some skill points (called scrolls of learning).
*allows multiclassing up to 3 classes, by buying into a class. So lets say your a warrior and for 30 gold you can also learn thief. You then get another experience bar with a slider, and you can set how much experience goes into each class. You can have 3 classes per character.
*I havent tried the crafting system yet, but it also has one.
*quest info isnt as easy to find as other game, but it has a ingame encyclopedia showing all class skills, spells, quests, monster info in the game (other games you have to go to other sites and print it out).
*You can play the good side, all but 2 races free (3players in party max in free version single player mode), but paying the ubgrade fee you get all the good and in addition a evil side with just as many races.
*There is NO monthly playing fee.

If you like to solo play, this is the best game I have ever played (the single player mode).

Try the free version out (has windows and Mac versions)

I don't really play MMRPG, nor have any interest, but one I found based on somebody's discussion in the chatroom is call Flash Flash Revolution at flashflashrevolution.com and is basically like Dance Dance Revolution except you use the keyboard.  It really helps you with rhythm.  When I get the money (soon), I'm going to get the stuff to play DDR at home for exercise, but first I need a bed.

Melissa, I could only play DDR by myself inside a room with no windows. ;D

The MMORPGs sound incredible, but there's a few problems: 1. I've got a Mac   2. It's a high-end multimedia workstation, not really meant to be used for games anyways.

My PS2 will do until I can get my hands on a PS3 and FF12 & Silent Hill 5. Then no one will hear from me ever again. ;D

EDIT: Oops, just noticed the game you mentioned was Mac compatible, Kendra. Must....resist... game...

Not so much online really.

But over the last two months I have found I really LOVE racing games on the XBox 360
Specifically:
Project Gotham Racing
Test Drive Unlimited

The only problem is I really tend to loose my cool and get REALLY frustrated and angry.
It's like, all that anger and frustration that sits right below the surface just comes out.

It just makes me realize all that much more that I REALLY shouldn't have testosterone flowing through me.

I'm addicted to Forza. There are a couple threads where I mention that driving is a semi-erotic, passionate, sensual experience for me - and Forza is the only game I've played which can recreate those sensations at times. Take an NSX around the Nürburgring Ring... get it into a rythym... and oh my... lol...

But I only have the original Xbox. Pout.

That's what Halo(2) is for! Whenever I start getting *really* frustrated with all this... it's time to go huntin' Covenant. Or better yet... my friends ;)

Hmmm, curiously though, I haven't touched Halo in months. Forza, yes... but the kill-everything-that-moves games.. not so much ;)

I've never really liked those genre of games personally.

I've never liked Doom or Half-Life and whatnot, but Halo is different. I'd NEVER played a modern console game before Halo, so the mystery of the story, the tease of trying to get to the next level to see what happens next (and the cut scenes)... was addicting. The scenery and environments are also amazing to explore. I never had any interest in these games before, but my friend convinced my wife to get it for me for my birthday. I hooked it up on a thursday night, played until 4am, muddled through work on friday... and didn't sleep or eat until sunday, I was just so LOST in it. I actually cried when I finally got to the ending cut-scene, just in appreciation for how *amazing* the whole thing is, the pride and workmanship and creativity that went into creating it.

Truth be told, there's a certain artistry in trying to perfect the technique of getting past the enemy. Curiously, after spending hours and dozens of lives trying to fight my way through them, I often find I can just run PAST them, no fighting, no shots fired.

There's a metaphor in there somewhere, lol...

Oh my gosh, I totally used to be that way.  The HRT helped with that so much.  I hated getting so angry.  It made everyone around me miserable and nothing good came from it.  I still like racing games though. :)

Does anyone play "Second Life"?  I realize it's not technically a game but I just got into it and it pretty neat.

Basically you create your personal avatar and live a second life virtually in a new world.  You can shop virtually or for real and lots cool stuff.  The learning curve for all the basic stuff is a bit technical for me but even I'm figuring it out LOL.  It's free to play unless you buy a premium membership which comes with being able to buy land and build a house and some other features I'm not really into.  I just like the idea of mingling with people from all over the Earth in this cyber world.

Anyone interested in just do a search on "Second Life" and you will find thier site....

Yes Brandi, I have a SL account, but I have logged on once in almost a year.  I used to really enjoy it though.  In the last 6-9 months SL has really gone downhill.  Constant Grid outages, very bad server-side lag, texture delays, etc...

I'll try and log on tonight and say hi.

My name is Jessica Robertson there.
