Gay rights groups are decrying the assault of Lance Reyna, an activist for gay and transgendered rights, in a Houston Community College bathroom.
Houston GLBT Community Center president Tim Brookover said "The Center condemns this attack against a member of our community."
Their description of the event:
On June 22, at 1:40 p.m., Lance Reyna, a transgender man, was attacked at knifepoint on the campus of Houston Community College. Reyna was attacked in a restroom by a male who said "Hey, queer!" in a falsetto voice and put a knife to his throat. The attacker then told Reyna to hand over his valuables and began beating Reyna. Once Reyna was on the ground, the attacker kicked him in the head.

HOUSTON -- A student says he was attacked in a restroom at a local college and the motive for the attack may have been backlash at his sexuality, KPRC Local 2 reported Wednesday.
Houston Community College officials said a male student was in the restroom when another man walked in and attacked him from behind at about 1:40 p.m. Tuesday.
"He put me in a headlock and then a knife to my throat and called me derogatory homosexual names. He demanded all my belongings then punched me in the head, face and kicked me," said Lance Reyna.
Reyna is a gay transgender and is active in the gay groups and organizations on the campus. He said he thinks he was targeted and that the attack was a hate crime,

A transgender student was attacked at knife-point and beaten at Houston Community College and some are calling it a hate crime.
The true motive is still murky, since the suspect also stole the victim's wallet.
But as a result, Lance Reyna is sorting out stolen credit cards and shaken nerves.
Reyna was born a female but began the gender reassignment process about five years ago.

Lance Reyna, 29, told police he was attacked in a bathroom on the Houston Community College central campus.
A Houston Community College political science student says he was targeted in a knifepoint robbery and beating at the school's midtown fine arts building because of his work as a transgender campus activist.
Sadly I see little coming of this... I don't think Houston has any sort of trans protection laws...

Yeah, other than jail time for assault, battery, and armed robbery.
I like this from the comments section: "Why do Jerry's Kids get millions, and ->-bleeped-<- kids get beaten and killed?" I would have said "trans" instead of "->-bleeped-<-," but "->-bleeped-<-" nicely echoes "Jerry."
That is IF the authorities choose to do anything about it. I live in texas and am sad to say, the state in general has no concern for the health or safety of a trans person, and if you happen to be attacked its generally considered to be your fault.

And people wonder why I wont travel the state or visit them in any other texas city. LoL Atleast I have some protections where I'm at and the state 10min away offers full protections. Makes running if necessary easy.

Federal hate crimes legislation passed last year. Dude from the Department of Justice told me and a bunch of other lawyers recently that they are chomping at the bit to take on these kinds of cases. All they need is for a prosecution to occur so they can intervene. If your local PD is being an ignoramus, they said to call the FBI. Go Go Gadget DoJ!

The illusion is that laws protect. They don't. It is illegal to assault someone, put a knife to their throat, as well as do so in a hate crime. Does that stop that from happening? No. What does stop it is a bullet to the center of mass of the attacker. I've said it for years. Protect yourself at home. Protect yourself in public. It's common sense.
my apologies to anyone who lives in Texas, but it is Texass. What do you except from a state that criminalize sodomy and makes same-sex marriage a felon.
Let them seceded from the union, or give it back to Mexico.
I not surprise, Texas has always be hostlie to the transgender/transsexual,intersex and other gender different community. It is horrible that this happen and I hope they caught this creep. Give him the maxium punishment.
