Title: how old were you when you started to transition?
Post by: gilligan on July 12, 2010, 10:09:37 PM
my question is: how old were you when you started to transition?

my answer: i just recently started to mainly because my parents are against it and i live with them. I was 19 at the time.

I guess I started about a month before I turned 16, but that was just a haircut and some baggy hoodies. :P

I finally got a binder a little after I turned 16.

I should have my name and gender changed on my birth certificate and have my letter for T written (and hopefully I'll get to the endocrinologist) in August, about a month before I turn 17.

Good luck with your transition and your parents; hopefully they'll come around.  :-\

I started when I was about 16 and a half (cut my hair, came out to family & friends, started going to therapy, refused to be considered female, blah blah), and got my first legit binder a couple of months ago when I turned 17 (instead of my pain-in-the-ass ace bandages...LOL).

Actually did something about my appearance maybe 15-16. Came out 16, going to start hormones soon I think.

18. It would have been earlier if I had know what FTM was.

I realized i was trans when i was 16. Came out a couple weeks after my 17th birthday. Started binding right after that. Got my name legally changed about 4 months later.
Started T when i was 17.

I only started about this time last year, so 23.  Like some of the others, I would have started sooner if I knew what an FtM was.  But I feel I had to experiment with everything else to have any certainty about this at all.  I wouldn't give up those years of experimentation I don't think.

I was 18, finally cut my hair, nothing but guy clothes, binder. But like most, boys clothes were my preference ever since I was little, just slightly "girlier" at times. I'm 19 now

I find it interesting that every one of you have started transition at an early age, yet the trans men I consider my friends and I know IRL all started their transition late in life. Guess they don't tend to frequent these types of forums as often.

Yeah, knowing that trans works the other way would have been VERY helpful.

i would've started sooner if I had accepted that i was trans. I feel so much more comfortable with myself now that i don't hide under the title of "butch lesbian" (i don't even like girls). I still have a lot of dysphoria, but i am so much more comfortable dressing/acting/etc as a guy. I had heard about trans people, but never really considered that i may be one. but when i think about it. I even wore an athletic cup playing hockey without considering myself FTM (i don't know how i managed to miss that signal). I have always dressed more masculine than femme (except in high school, when this one girl referred to me as 'it').

But when I finally came out to myself I was 19, I immediately started being who i want to be, not what society thinks i should.

I cut my hair and started binding (with an ace wrap) at 16, but I didn't know what being FtM was.. I still considered myself lesbian- just masculine- and did that for about a year and a half. I came out to my friends and mom when I was about 18 and got my first legit binder. Started T at 19 and I'll be turning 20 soon.
I'm looking forward to getting my name and gender marker changed eventually, but top surgery is my main focus for transition right now.

Cool hat! My real hope is to get onto T before I'm 40 - that seems a good milestone to aim for. Not sure how my poor old body will cope...not quite so twangy as my younger friends on here...but it's still a great feeling to finally work myself out. Even if I was the slowest learner ever!

I started once when I was 19 and failed then I officially started at 21 again after some exploration and on and off time on HRT.  Glad it worked out as did though.

16. I'm 20 next month.

If we're getting technical, I officially started living full time at 16. Before then I knew I was a boy inside, just didn't know that that was even a possibility or that i could transition. I've passed for male since a very young age when I got to choose my own clothes. i passed alot around the age of 13 cause that's when I got my first male haircut.

Oh jeez dude, I remember when I came out to people and someone kept trying to argue to me that I was really a butch lesbian, when I'm actually a gay ftm (LOL). She had been telling people I was a lesbian the whole year, too, even though I made it pretty obvious that I had no sexual interest in women. Oh, society...

I've fought against girl clothes since I was able to, after puberty messed me over I attempted on and off to strap my chest down, and around age 14 I tried my hand at packing with socks.  This all just made me think I was a freakish tomboy.  I learned about transition last year, and now I'm in therapy and trying to get something done about it.  I'm 20.  And as other guys have said, knowing what FtM or gender dysphoria was earlier on would have helped me out loads.

I started coming out to family about a year ago, and started socially transitioning 10 months ago (had to wait until after my boyfriend broke up with me knew about it)

Well I didn't really consider being transgendered until a week or so before my 18th birthday. A week after that I got my first binder. And then I got a sort of emoish haircut which progressively got shorter to what it is today.

So I began at 18. I'll be 19 in October.

First thought about it at 18, before deciding I was too short to bother.  Actually started at 26. Oh, the wasted time! My life between 18 and 24 was terrible and I still needed a couple of years to recover and get back on track.

Dressing since 12-13, haircut and full passing at 15.

Wanted to be a boy since born, kept on telling everyone that I was a boy. 6th grade( around 12 years old) cut hair off and dressed as a guy. Although I was told I was a dyke. (Had NO interest in girls) so I let my hair grow out.

Officially learned what a FTM was at 16, and learned that I'm a FTM & Gay, currently 16, came out to mother & friends, and getting first binder :D

I was about 13, and I'm 15 now. Once I get more information on things and my mom gets a job, I'll probably be able to start HRT, so I'm happy about that. :]

Hmm, tough question.  Really depends on what you consider starting.

When I was 6 or 7 I would try to convince the boys to let me be on their team in boys verses girls games, but I wasn't trying (not conciously anyway) to be a boy.

I was 17 or 18 the first time I bought a pair of mens jeans.
21 when friends starting saying I looked and acted like a 15 year old boy.
23 the first time I wore a binder and tried to pass as a boy and accepted for myself that I'm trans.
24 - 25 when I came out to some friends and started living as a guy, and also had my first partner who referred to me as her boyfriend.
Now I'm 26, moved to a new city and back into the closet except for a few close friends.  I'm working now on getting back on my feet, moving out of my moms house and trying to support myself again so I can try again and get into therapy and on T.   Hopefully I'll be able to start medically transitioning before I'm 30.

I've been dressing masculine ever since I was able to pick out what kind of clothes I like, so pretty young! But I only came out to my mother a little over a year ago in a bad way, and am struggling to take it any further. But within the same year time frame I have been dressing more masculine, the way I've always wanted to dress, cut my hair short, and have fully identified with being a man with no doubts at all.

Started seriously working the gender stuff out when I was 19, joined susans when I was 20 just as I was moving from identifying as androgyne to ftm. Started T when I was 21, currently 23. I will be exactly 2 years on T in one months time :D

When I was 6 or 7 I asked my mom if there was "an operation that could make me a boy." She laughed and said no and it wasn't talked about after that.

I cut my hair when I was 13. I had always worn boys' clothes since I was a kid. I thought about hormones starting at around age 18 when an ex of mine began his transition but I was adamantly against it for a while, I think as sort of a defense mechanism, and now I really regret not starting T back then.

At age 22 I told my therapist that I wanted to take hormones, she was supportive and she called the local LGBT health center and talked to the person who deals with TG issues. Interestingly, this person told my therapist that I did not "fit the description" of a transsexual because I did not absolutely loathe my body. Thinking back, that really ticks me off!

When I was 24 I got a new therapist who specialized in TG issues. Several months into seeing her I told her that I wanted to start T and she wrote me a letter. I began T in June 2008 at age 25. I'm now 27.

Like I said, if I could do it all over again I would definitely have started T much younger, but I was afraid. For one, my hips didn't fully stop growing until I was 22 or 23 so if I had been on T that would have likely been prevented.

Learned what FTM was, knew that was me, started trying to pass and came out to my friends a few months ago.

I came out to my mum today.

I'm nearly 15.
