I actually considered putting this in the health section but then figured 'Polls' was the place to be.
So, just out of curiosity: what substances do you use and how often?
I decided to go for Alcohol, Smoking, Softdrugs and Harddrugs.
I understand some folk might consider smoking a softdrug on its own, but I went for the Dutch a-b-c way on this one.
Personally I smoke often (daily), drink occasionally and every now and then take a hit from a joint (rarely). I haven't used harddrugs for over a year so I went with 'none' on that one.
I'm very boring
I have possibly two or three alcoholic drinks about once month and none of anything else.
My substance abuse, if you can call it that, is all food, particularly chocolate! I'm not bulimic or anything but I do enjoy my nosh and I love trying unusual or unfamiliar dishes.
I have but one vice. I voted, but I'm not mentioning it here!! :P
I removed Hard Drugs from the poll. I do not feel it would be appropriate to admit to using illegal drugs (of any kind) at Susans.
If you have a question about this please talk with either Nero or Susan.

I am a smoker and I do like a drink once in a while. At one time I fell in to a bottle and had a time of it climbing back out.
I have a cocktail just about every evening, Rum, it is so inexpensive here. Rum and tonic with lime.
Also I grow and use cannabis for relaxation and relief from MS symptoms, legalize it.
In my youth I did a lot of psychedelics, no regrets.
Does morphine, Vicodin, or Dilaudid qualify as hard drugs? Because in the last 3 weeks I had a lot of all of those! lol (under doctor's orders of course). But generally I drink rarely, don't smoke anything ever, and don't do any drugs other than my hormones, vitamins, and the occasional ibuprofen.
I smoke cigarettes and take too much ibuprofen and naproxin every single day.... I'll also take a vicodin from time to time...
The first is bad for me, I know... and I really don't care anymore. The other three are prescription, I prefer to avoid the vicodin because it makes me feel all foggy and interferes with my sleep, or causes me to be almost narcoleptic. That seems to be up to a flip of the coin.
I've pretty much given up drinking and I beat the hard drugs a long time ago. I say beat because the craving is totally gone and I don't remember the exact amount of time its been since my last bit.
I don't smoke and I rarely drink. I only drink when I'm with my parents, and I only see them once every 6 months or so. I just don't like to drink alone, it makes me feel depressed. I take Prozac daily, but because it's prescribed--granted I don't think I ever want to go off it because it makes me want to cry if I don't take it.
I haven't smoked since middle school and I haven't really drank more than a glass or two of alcoholic a year since then either (yes, a year, I just don't like it much).
What I am strangely addicted to, is grapefruit juice. I can't stand the taste, but it is like I can't get enough. I think Ocean Spray puts crack or something in their supposedly 100% grapefruit juice! I even feel bad if I don't get enough, and feel great when I have had it.
This addiction if you can call it that, is bad enough to where if I had to choose between 3 things, the first being tea & coffee the second being chocolate and cheesecake and the third being grapefruit juice I'd pick the third even though I know it doesn't taste great. It is really the strangest thing.
Hhaha that is weird! I smoke a pack a day, drink maybe a few times a month and smoke pot every once in a while. I used to be a pothead, but I find it pointless now.
I like many a drink when I can afford one - however in the spending priority it is quite low on the list. If I were rich I'd probably be quite a heavy drinker so it may be a good thing I am not.
Marijuana is LEGAL in many parts of the country, including Cali and the whole 'medical marijuana' (my medical need for a marijuana permit is that going to jail would be hazardous to my health). It looks pretty much like Cali is going to outright legalize it this November on the ballot.

Yet another reason to move there!! :D
Once Cali does it and gets away with it (the tax money that is) at least 10 other states1 will follow suit. Greed is good as Gordon Gekko once said.
As it is it's de facto legal for everyone. You almost have to walk up to a cop and blow in in his/her face, and even then...
Myself, I enjoy our fine local micro brews, Hopmonk Tavern, Russian River Brewery, Lagunitas all make wonderful IPAs, and the RRB has a brew called Pliny the Elder that is just the nectar of the gods.
1. Arizona, Oregon, Alaska, Hawaii, Michigan, Iowa, Colorado, New Mexico, Maine, Rhode Island all pretty much for sure.
To paraphrase Maurice Chevalier, 'Thank heaven for little microbreweries'

And softdrugs that are not illegal in the entire wide world...
Fair enough, each their own feelings.
Well hops grows very well where good wine grapes grow, so long before Sonoma County was famous for wine, we had hops farms and hop kilns all over. So the beer deal here is pretty good. And I failed to mention the Bear Republic Brewery in Healdsburg, home of the awesome Racer 5.
But of course, anyone who is living in Sonoma or Napa and doesn't like wine is pretty much paying to much to live in the wrong place. So me and my GF go off once a month or so and do some wineries. And I can pick up stuff that they sell for $8-15 a bottle on the East Coast or Midwest for like $3-6 a bottle, and you can get a case discount of 15% if you buy 12 (any 12, it does not have to be 12 of the same), on top of the sale winery price, it's pretty good.
Of course, oddly enough (or not) it's also pretty good for growing the green bud too, though the areas north of here in Mendocino and Humboldt are not too shabby either.
I smoke 1 or 2 cloves a day. I can't drink though, I'm allergic to alcohol.
Occasionally drink at get-togethers, which only happens once every few months. I dislike tobacco smoking, but I rather enjoy indulging in a little pot now and then.
I smoke cigarettes. I read that you can't get on HRT if you smoke. Is that true?
In California if you can write the check, you can get someone to prescribe HRT for you.

Meaning if you can pay, they don't care?
Exactly, what in this state does that NOT apply to?
I'm not sure haha. But good to know!

You can get HRT if you smoke, but be ready for the "You are need to quit, seeing you are take Estrogen" speech every time you see your doctor. Hell you hear it every time even if you are not on HRT. ;D
You're young, andthenwekisss, try to quit. You don't want to be 56 and still smoke. I have been smoking since I was 13, and it costs me in my health.
I've only been smoking 6 or 7 months, and I think I'll probably quit between now and whenever I start HRT. I do enjoy it and maybe I'll have one every now and then but it's not something I can't live without lol. I just like it. I wish it wasn't bad lol.

That's the basic take for most drugs. We were talking about this the other night at work when we were all discussing our last acid trip and how much of a bummer it is that we no longer have the day and a half/two days needed to recover from that anymore.
Every now and then, hubby and I will splurge on a bottle or two, or three, or a whole box, of wine.
We choose a wine we can enjoy, and for the first two glasses, we discuss the wine.
Then sometimes.. we get good and silly and don't care 'bout it anymore.
I also enjoy a pipe now and then. Sunday's Finest or Sweet Dublin being the tobacco I tend to put in it.
If it wasn't for the law I'd put something else in my pipe and smoke it, but...
Occationally, I'll roll cigarettes from the pipe tobacco, usually when it's become a bit more dry than when it's "new".
Sweet Dublin rolled cigarettes are incredibly smooth and gentle.

Wow Miniar, you sound like a tobaco commercial :)
I started smoking at the age of 15 and I started drinking when I was 20.
I've tried to quit smoking 4 times, always cold turkey. The longest period I've survived without cigarettes when trying to quit was 1 full year. Such a shame I fell back after such an achievement. I smoke about 15 cigarettes per day. Sometimes more. My drinking habit consists of a glass of red wine every weekend.
Everybody picks their own poison. :)
I smoke the herb multiple times a day. It makes my mood better, helps me sleep, takes away pain in my joints, why is this illegal again?
As for cigarettes and booze, I can take or leave 'em.
Maybe I sound pathetic but my only drug is caffeine. I have a serious soda problem that has me spending about $50 a week on soda. Though lately I've been working on changing that and saving the cash to go towards insurance so that I can get on T. Tried cigarettes and hated them.
I don't smoke at all and occasionally drink.
I had a horrible experience once, i was tipsy and the people in the room i was in started smoking weed. I went NUTS, starting punching myself in the face and tried to strangle myself. Was like i was just a passenger and wasn't in control. My mind was screaming at me to stop hurting myself but i couldn't make my fists stop, i honestly got scared at one point that i would kill myself. Was scary, i'm not going anywhere near that stuff ever.
I dont know why that happened :-\
All of my substance abuse I don't consider abuse, some of it yes. I think all the acid I took actually helped me to see beyond myself, melt my ego and expand my comprehension (consiousness). Doing peyote or mushrooms with the right person can really take a relationship to another place. Music becomes magic.
Facing insanity builds character.
I drink (beer) heavily just about every day, and I smoke cigs when I drink, but only about 2-3 packs a weeks. I'd like to quit but I enjoy the buzz and I have nothing else to do with my time.
i went with alcohol :occasionally , smoking and/or softdrugs:very rarely
although like 18~20 months ago i would go like, smoking: a lot (as in terms of type of plants (tobacco or other )inside and in terms of ' a lot more often') , alcohol :drinking myself into a coma whenever i can
i like to experiment , so trying out some hard-drugs once or twice may or may not have happened :P
heh I go through at least half a pack of cigarettes a day, drink beer once or twice a month, but very very rarely will I smoke pot heh
Don't like the stuff and don't use it period.
Give me a clean fresh air and a Pepsi/Coke any day.

So fizzy, sugary caffeine then :)
That right Pica Pica.
I prefer another type of poison.

Smoking often, I'm a daily smoker. Alcohol rarely, I'll drink maybe 2-3 times a month, never was a huge fan of drinking. I feel the same about weed, all my roommates are potheads and always offer it to me and I'll accept very occasionally. I occasionally use other psychedelic drugs or MDMA, by occasionally I mean like 6-7 times a year. Had a coke problem before and I'm so glad I ran out of money and quit.
I prefer another type of poison.
You'd be hard pressed to drink anything worse than coke/pepsi.

Off topic but what the hell is coke? i drink it daily, bit worrying.
I dont see why people like drinking so much, i used to drink for the buzz but that lasted about an hour and then i'd fall asleep. Next day i'd feel rough and have no money, not worth it.
The only current vice I have going is coffee.

Mmhmm...
The addiction is as bad a cigarettes.
It's the right amount of sugar added/released when one drinks/absorbes the caffeine from the cola drink that creates the addiction. It's reaction could be compared to fast crack and as invigorating as cigarettes. Much of what happens goes unnoticed until the synapses reconfigure or remodel the addiction/diet. This leads to the headache that does not go away until you drink more.
Took me forever to finally quit pepsi. Then I mainly drank water and juices. Had clear pee all the time! Ironic, you get marked automatically as positive for whatever drug if you piss is too clear. They assume you took a cleanser the night before. Ugh! Drank pepsi again just to pass the pee test. Stupid.. dumb... dumber... arrgh! The headache...
