Title: Which gender marker?
Post by: icontact on July 16, 2010, 07:25:43 PM
I've been post-transition for two years, yadada, you know how it goes. I'll be a senior in fall and am currently applying for scholarships. I suppose I have to mark F on the apps?

unless you've legally changed the marker, a big F would probably be the best option. I don't know where you're from, but in the US all financial aid is done under legal terms (name, gender marker, etc.).  Mainly because if you put an M, they have the right to know whether you've registered for selective service (not just governmental funded).

Don't hope for that. Human Rights Campaign is the largest organizer of LGBT rights in the US, and here's a link to their scholarship database. All the scholarships here are aimed a LGBT and allied students.

And they're terrible with trans issues.

So join up with the Tea Baggers, the Republicans or perhaps the Liberty Road Baptist Church.

Of course, it's possible that they only suck on trans issues because trans people are too self-absorbed, or too lazy (let the other person do it, or pay for it), or too afraid to join, work and try to make a difference.

Mark it with an F unless your gender markers on other documents say "M."

With HRC:
I've been doing as much shizznat as possible with trans activism with other LGBT groups. I've been visiting my state's capitol every year pushing for GENDA/transgender rights for the past maybe 6 or 7 years. I've done a lot of work on small scale organizing (it's the best I can do for the moment). I've got my fingers crossed hoping my stories of personal experiences, and other information I've gathered will do some good. Maybe change the thoughts of at least one person with more power.

Or you could be stubborn like me and mark nothing. Then I leave it to whoever's looking over the papers to mark whatever. If they look it over infront of me they usually check M. I don't advise it though. I just can't stand the thought of that letter. Half the time when I talk to places on the phone that I have accounts with, they end up changing my stuff to M without me asking. Lol.  I'm legally male now though, soon as my papers get mailed back.
