Title: Epilation and ingrowing hairs
Post by: Antonia on July 23, 2010, 08:19:45 AM
Hi! gals

Just started to use a braun silk epil epilator, It's really helped to get smooth despite the initial pain! Only problem I have is ingrowing hair on my right leg inner thigh. horrible red bumps, how long before this won't happen any more. completed 2 epilation cycles now on legs, arms, chest, hands, only the right leg giving me problems.
Whats best way to treat these ingrowing hairs?

Antonia,

When I first started epilating and shaving, I had tons of ingrown hairs.  Over time, they number has come down, but I still get them.  Some are more easier to remove digging into them since they are so close to the surface.  Others turn into white gunk that you just want to run away from.  You might want shower first and then epilate.  Once you are done, apply some aftershave lotion (you may want to get something for sensitive skin).  That might help reduce the number.  I have heard that if you have curly hair, your are more prone to getting ingrown hair.  Hope that helps. :)

hi, velinda

thanx for your answer, its what I thought might happen and yes i shower first, I use an moisturising antibacterial handwash, epilate, then use the handwash over the epilated area again as I know there is a chance of infection after removal.

If your hair's curly or wavy that's growing in, baby powder helps with curly hair that grows in.

I don't have any experience with epilators but I did see a new product that really caught my attention.  It is an at home laser hair removal system by Tria.  Seems like a good product and very reasonably priced.  Can find it on ebay for under $500.  It is on my wish list as soon as I have the extra money to spend.

Exfoliation is your friend when it comes to reduction of ingrown hairs.

By removing dead skin cells every time you shower with vigorous (but not "rub yourself raw") scrubbing using a wash cloth, you make it marginally easier for hair to reach the surface with fewer misadventures.

You can also try some exfoliating soaps or scrubs available in stores, but I haven't tried any. My method of chemical exfoliation involves dissolving uncoated aspirin in water, a trick I picked up from a Michelle Phan video.

I use the same brand epilator (the pink one in the series). Only a few have really tried to get properly infected so far, thank heaven.

If you continue to epilate regularly, pretty much every part of epilation will improve within a month or so. Less discomfort, less trouble with the irritation bumps, etc.
