Title: yay new medications!
Post by: Samantha_Marie on August 30, 2010, 01:32:51 PM
Just thought I'd share that today my doctor prescribed me propecia and next week when I come in she'll prescribe progesterone!

So that makes me REALLy happy!!! She also drew some blood, and is going to check my e levels, but said she didn't see a reason to check my t levels. I'm unsure of why she didn't want to or why she saw no reason to, I'd think it would play an important role.

It seems that the doctor I have is VERY curious about the effects of hrt from male to female. She has had several patients before who have transitioned, but she seems to pretty much leave the decisions in our hands to what prescriptions we take, as long as our bodies are coping well... She has a ton of questions from impotence to sexual desire to day to day emotions.

Not sure how I feel about that, I am excited I get to take everything I want to but at the same time it makes me wonder. Oh well I can always stop taking a pill if any adverse effects come along.

I do wonder about progesterone, I hear it can cause depression? I believe I read somewhere that some of you have felt that and I would like to hear first hand about the way you felt on it and while taking it.

Synthetic progestins ( provera ) are more likely to cause negative side effects than progesterone (prometrium) barring any peanut allergies.

Some docs don't or rarely check T levels. It depends on his method of treatment. Your doc is more or less thinking that if your E level is in the normal female range for someone your age, backgorund etc why check the T level. You can always request to have the T level checked since they already have your blood. There maybe an extra expense though depending on your insurance, doc, lab, etc.

Ok I have a real important question. Without discussing the dosage amounts, we all know there are two different sizes for propecia that are available. I won't discuss how many I take per day or the current amount but what I want to know is this.

Will they both have a positive effect for what I'm looking for? Is the larger dosage a better option or does it not make a difference either way. My insurance will pay for one size(the larger) but not the other. I was prescribed the dosage my insurance doesn't pay for so it cost me 74$. My doctor is willing to change my next prescription to the one my insurance will cover if that's what I would like, but isn't sure of the effects it'll have either way since it's a new drug for her in regards to ftm ts patients.

So should I switch to what my insurance will cover and pay $3 a month or is it worth sticking with the smaller dosage?

discuss it with your doctor and then follow their advise.
