I recently stumbled upon a forum where women were talking about and comparing their shoulder width and I was a bit surprised at some of the posts. On average the women in that thread were around 18" across at the shoulders and all were under 6'. Some were as short as 5' and had 21" shoulders! This came as a huge surprise since I'm 5'10" and my shoulders are a little bit under 16" across. It then made me wonder how wide your average female's hips are because I figure these women probably had the hips to balance out their shoulders. I went looking online for what the average hip width for women is, but all I found were average hip to waist ratios; no actual measurements and no hip to shoulder ratios. I was hoping for a similar type of thread as the one I'd found about shoulder width, but since I couldn't find one I figured I'd just make my own. So, tell me your height, shoulder width, and hip width. Male, female; it doesn't matter, I'm curious about both.
Myself: ≈ 5'10"/16"/14"
Huuuummmm Interesting. 5' 10"/21"/19"
I'm not sure I'm measuring this right, but...
6'0-6'1 / 17" / 18"

Your hips are wider than your shoulders? O_O
...jealous-_-
They're about the same in the mirror, so it might be more like 17" / 17" or 18" / 18" ... I wasn't sure whether to hold the tape straight or measure between endpoints or what.
Edit: Ok, my shoulders are very slightly wider than my hips! I guess I'm more like 17.5" / 17" and probably measured my hips wrong. For some reason this was really bugging me so I even took a picture and drew lines on it! :P http://i762.photobucket.com/albums/xx263/AmySmiles729/Me/hips_shoulders.jpg (http://i762.photobucket.com/albums/xx263/AmySmiles729/Me/hips_shoulders.jpg)
FTM: 5' 5.5" Shoulders 15in, hips 12 in.
Measuring at widest point of hips?
5'4"
19 shoulders
17 hips
I have ridiculously large shoulders for a female my size though, I love them! :)

Yeah, the widest part of the hips is what you measure. Also I thought you might like to know that the attractive hip to shoulder ratio for a male is supposed to be between 0.7 and 0.8. If you measured correctly yours is a 0.8.
You're all making me feel tiny.

Oh, cool.
Jennypenny and I measured each other. Curiously we're opposite measurements. (Makes us fit together better?)
Me: 6'1" 23" shoulder 18" hip (30 size on top, 20-22 on bottom)
Jenn: 5'10" 18" shoulder 23" hip
Me: 179cm (5'11") tall, 21" shoulders, 19" hips. I wasn't sure how to measure, so I just took the measurement around, and halved it. I might try and measure again later, and do a better job. Oh god, I need to lose some upper body mass. I guess it could be worse.

IDK how accurate that is since some people have different sized chests and butts independent of their hip/shoulder sizes.

Very true. As is usually said, all should be taken with a grain salt.

I just lean one shoulder or hip against a wall and start there. Then I try to eyeball the other side the best I can. The only way I could think of to actually get a perfect measurement would be to find 2 straightedges and connect them at one end. Then take the 2 free ends on the sides of your hips/shoulders and do some basic trigonometry to find the distance from one free end to the other. You'd have to also attach some kind of extension to each side of your hips/shoulders and then subtract their length at the end since the straightedges will not likely meet your body at their center and you'll lose some of the width. Too much work in my opinion though:p
5'7" tall
Shoulders: 18"
Hips: 16-17" (harder to tell, because I can't hold the tape flat against my body so I'm eyeballing it)
I am 5 foot 2. No idea how you're coming up with such tiny measurements. D:
Hips: 46 inches
Waist:36
Bust: 45
Shoulders: 15.5 (across)
Inseam: 27
Chest: 34
Neck: 14.5
Arm: 26
Now...who is going to stitch together a lovely outfit? ;D
I thought we were doing width. . .?
Hip circumference: 34 in.
It's pretty hard to get a good shoulder measure on your own so I won't bother. I guess I'm just smaller than I thought I was.
6'3", shoulders 21", hips 20" as best I could judge.
MtoF
Height 5ft 9in
hips 17inch
shoulders 17inch
I've been lucky as hormones have given me very rounded feminine hips
I'm 6'/15/14 :)
