Title: Informed consent
Post by: James42 on September 09, 2010, 05:51:40 AM
I'm going to be scheduling an appt with a qualified gender therapist, explaining that I've already had sessions with another therapist but would like to get assessed to start T, but if that doesn't work out I know there's the option for the informed consent route (which also might be cheaper).

So how do I go about it? Finding out if a doctor does informed consent

That's one thing I have found impossible in the UK, getting any GP to agree to informed consent. It's great the way you can get that in America. Do any other countries offer informed consent as well?

I'm not sure if there is some easy way to find out who does informed consent.  You could start with Howard Brown Health Center (http://www.howardbrown.org/hb_services.asp?id=37) in Chicago and ask them if they know if any sort of list is available.  If that fails you could take a form like the attached to your doctor and see if they will accept it.

Thanks! I guess if I don't find out for sure if a doctor does informed consent, I'll take the form in.

And @JohnR...I have no idea, sorry. Each state here is so different, I can only imagine different countries

I had no difficulty getting my GP to prescribe on an informed consent basis.

Wish I had your GP. Mine won't even do blood tests because I chose to self medicate. Although he would if I was a hard drugs user  ::)

I know in the case of my surgery they wouldn't do informed consent just in case I changed my mind later and decided to sue them for not trying to talk me out of it.

Doctors are supposed to help their patients, not take a personal stand.  You advised your doctor you are self medicating.  That is dangerous without knowing blood levels.  Your doctor should have ordered a blood test just to make sure you aren't harming yourself.

As for the second paragraph, that kind of logic could apply to almost any surgery.  "Hey doc!  That heart surgery you did on me added 20 more years to my life.  I didn't want to live that long.  You shoulda talked me out of it!  Now I'm suing you!"

I'd say a new doctor is in order.
