Title: Clothes
Post by: Jowey on September 14, 2010, 08:14:19 AM
Guys clothes really don't fit me that well - i'm 5'4 and really slim - Size small is waaay too big for me and i hate to think that its going to be like that forever if i transition :/
Whereas girls clothes have this "skinny fit" thing, normally with capped sleeves or something and i just can't wear that .. i completely just feel like a boy in girls clothes, it looks wrong to me
I wear womens jeans because mens are too hard to find in my size which is embarrassing
I need some ideas for clothes - would love to know what everyone else thinks about clothes... the fit on them/womens or mens/where they buy clothes/what they hate ect ect

have you tried shopping in the boys/ young mens department?  I would think you could definitely find jeans in your  size there, and not all boys shirts look like they are for little kids.

My son had the same problem when he was younger...he has since grown...but we also like levi jeans that have length & waste sizes ... however, we did have lots of luck in the youth sizes ... a boys extra large is equal to a man's small.

It sounds like you're about the same size as me. I've never really found too much trouble with clothes though. I have to shop in places that sell XS sizes (XXS pre-T), but once you know which shops fit well, it's fine. Topman do great clothes which go into really small sizes.
If all else fails, I can occasionally shop in the children's section for age 13-15 stuff.
As for jeans, I buy a 28 short leg and then just turn them up at the bottoms.

I'm 5'2" and am very skinny too and I've never had a problem. When I first started wearing guys clothes even smalls seemed big but it's just that they fit differently. I've gotten used to it. Sizes aren't really standard sometimes a small tshirt from one place will be huge and a small from another store will fit perfectly. American eagle shirts run smaller that where I mostly get mine. Also bargain places like kohls and Ross have a lot of good small shirts on clearance sometimes. I actually just walked out of kohls and got a small in mens but also a jacket and some jeans from the boys section. I got a large in the boys. You just have to go to a lot of different stores and try different styles and sizes on until you fond what you feel the most comfortable in.

I have this problem too, although I'm a bit taller so perhaps you won't have the added problem of finding pants that are long enough.  I can find women's jeans that are small enough, but they most often are overly girly.  I have had good luck recently though with looking in the boys' section at Walmart, and they're usually cheaper than men's and women's too.  As far as shirts go, I've worn them too big for years so it's not a big problem for me.  The bagginess helps hide my chest.  You can get shirts from the boys' section though that are smaller than a men's small.  They don't all look like little kid clothes either; you can look in the school/dress section for plain or button-up ones.

I'm tall, so this isn't a problem I've run into. But I'm always browsing around various men's style blogs and forums, and I ran across this: http://shortshrifted.com/ (http://shortshrifted.com/)  which is dedicated to helping shorter/smaller guys find clothing and clothing purveyors. So it may be worth a browse.

This. I have to shop in the boys department usually. You just gotta sift through everything to find age appropriate pieces. A plus is that the clothes are cheaper haha.

I love American Apparel though, they go all the way to size xxsmall. Their xsmall fits me perfect. I have a 31"ish chest with a binder on. Too bad they're on the verge of bankruptcy :(

You may find some helpful stuff there  :). They have store suggestions and even some stores online that sell stuff that are for smaller guys. Happy shopping  ;D.

I don't shop much but in mens plain tees I like Targets Mossimo red brand.  They only go down to small (I'm 5'2 115lbs) but they're 'athletic fit', so they're more snug, so as long as you're not trying to use them as camouflage they're good.  Jeans shopping you're on your own.  I don't think my size is even made in mens, I just get lucky every couple of years and find something that works.  My current pair are boys cherokee, clearanced out before the jeans re-set, and I got them for just under $6.

"Athletic fit" stuff is usually slimmer. I'm going to back what @Revel said on Target's Mossimo shirts. They fit me pretty good and I'm 5'3" 120lbs.

Also for jeans, you could always go with the skinny jeans from some place like Urban Outfitters or Hot topic. The guy jeans in those are pretty small. I couldn't get into the Hot Topic ones in the smallest sizes. In general with skinny jeans I go for a 32" to fit the hips. If you don't have a lot of hips, you're lucky!

For regular shirts, often a small is too big for me too. And I don't notice x-small a whole lot in the men's dept. For button up shirts I've been going in the "young mens" dept or picking through stuff at Ross or TJ Maxx. Have found some good things there that fit me. I found a "distressed" levi's jacket at Ross last week for $30. XS. Still big in the sleeves but I was stoked it fit me otherwise.

Yeah, Hot Topic, PacSun, and other "young alternative" stores sell jeans down to a 26" waist.  Old Navy used to sell 28W28L pants, but they don't anymore.  *sigh*  All my awesome cargo pants from there are wearing out now, but I've been slowly replacing them with shorts from Target's boys' section and Hot Topic's men's section.
