Title: Holy crap!
Post by: meh on September 15, 2010, 11:47:36 AM
I just found out that my insurance covers 90% of certain GID related treatments including hormones, top surgery, and genitalia surgery. But I have to choose a Dr that is in the network, which would be Dr. Medalie which is fine by me. Plus he's only a 4/5 hr drive from where I live and I like his results.

I one happy boy.  ;D

Oh I have UnitedHealthCare by the way. If you have UHC too, call and check because plans differ.

*edit* Not sure about top surgery now. No doctors I've spoken to will take insurance. Will have to check out getting reimbursed instead.

i have that plan too!

um, so how much would your top surgery be with insurance, do you have any idea? I have never thought about how much it would cost with insurance.

I'm thinking somewhere around $600 for top surgery not including travel expenses. Actually it might be completely covered. I have to call and ask again, I was really nervous when I called and they didn't really know much, they had to keep putting me on hold to ask someone about my questions.

*edit* I would call UHC to make sure though, not all UHC plans cover SRS.

Damn I just emailed Dr. Medalie and he says top surgery isn't covered by insurance. He doesn't say why. I'm going to have to call UHC again. Maybe it's just him. I know Garramone doesn't accept insurance either though.

I know my insurance covers SRS it's just finding a decent Dr. that takes insurance for it argh.

Yeah, lots of plastic surgeons won't take insurance. I wish they did.

Sometimes you can pay up front and be reimbursed by insurance.

This is good to know. I had only heard of Aetna being an insurance provider that would cover such things (although it's my understanding that most workplaces specifically remove all GID-related coverage). I'm fine currently with the cost of my hormone therapy but bottom surgery is something I am going to do; preferably in a year or two. It'd be nice to be in a situation where my insurance would help with at least part of it.

The doctors I want to use don't accept insurance ahhh. I'll have to look into getting reimbursed.

Interesting. My UHC plan specifically excludes any GID or closely related care.  I will read it again very
carefully.

Is this something that changes significantly from state to state or company to company?

Depending on what type of insurance you have can make a difference.  Is it through an employer?  Is it one you purchased?  Is it through a school?  Each company or person negotiates what it wants covered and negotiate for prices.  My insurance specifically excludes trans stuff...it's under my wife .. however if I get insurance through my job it will be covered ... so I am switching in Jan.
