Before meeting Jade for the first time, I'll admit I was nervous. Having never met a transgender person before (at least not that I knew of), I had no idea what to expect. Would Jade look like the man he physically was, the woman he felt himself to be, or some awkward combination of the two?

I needn't have worried. The person that appeared before me, shaking my hand and smiling, looked for all intent and purpose like a man. Sure, his style was alternative: tattoos, shaggy blonde hair, painted fingernails and a touch of mascara. But it was certainly nothing I hadn't seen before.
