I'd like to suggest we have a topic where we post videos or identify songs that seem like they might be about gender issues, or have a special meaning to someone with gender issues that allows then to relate to to it in an unusual way. I'd like to kick it off with this one. In particular, I wonder if this song has special meaning for FTMs, especially anyone who has ever misplaced his packer.

How about "Hedwig and the Angry Inch"? I haven't seen it yet, but it was recommended to me by a friend. It's a musical. Although... it's about a gay guy who gets hoodwinked into a sex-change operation that gets botched, so how this would be a good movie for a MTF in the beginning stages of transition is beyond me... ??? ;)

I only heard that one for the first time very recently, and I was like, WTF? Here's the vid for it.

I'm a big fan of Hedwig and don't think it's supposed to be about Hedwig as an MTF, as she actually sings about being between genders (hence my inconsistent pronoun use here) and goes through a more complicated transition throughout the film: Hedwig and the Angry Inch- Tear Me Down (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eh-DRxfG5ao#ws) Hedwig begins as an effeminate gay man who gets (a botched) SRS to escape communist East Germany and then struggles with her identity for the rest of the film. Is she defined by her male past, her ambiguous parts, her attractions for men, how other people see her? Meanwhile, her bandmates are all over the gender spectrum and move freely on it: Hedwig and the angry inch - Midnight Radio (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7mnrwmmhkCI#ws) I want to say more, but don't want to reveal the surprises; you can message me if you want the spoilers. This film really helped me when it came to sorting out making the best of what I have body-wise in a compromise with my gender. It's really inspiring when it comes to doing what you have to to make yourself whole.
This is one that someone on this forum recommended a while ago, can't remember who it was though... whoever it was, it's beautiful, thanks.
Dar Williams - When I Was a Boy (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8gIZt0hE1E0#)
I rather like this one too, because of the refrain: "But you treat me like a woman, when I feel like a man!" Don't think it's actually about anything trans, that's just how I like to relate to it.
Hey Dude - Kula Shaker (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KDHd-vxcMDo#)
And this one by Madonna. It's a shame the ending is cut off this, but it's the only video of the good version of it I could find.
Madonna - What It Feels Like For A Girl (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6IelRBgB9JA#)
There is this one song by Hole which may have some slight connections with gender issues. The lyrics go something like "My d*ck's the biggest one you ever saw, yeah, suck my candy flesh". The singer is female, so that's why it could be connected to the topic. I haven't listened to Hole in a while, though, but it's from the Pretty On The Inside album.
I'll revise this post later and add the song, if I can find it.
Here is one of the definitives in my opinion.
Antony and the Johnsons For Today I Am a Boy (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q0EiWlp2gvc#)
... how did I miss that song? I heard a few Anthony and the Johnsons tracks back when Radio 2 played them more, but never that particular one - and it's far more beautiful to me. Thank you, Jenny.
Mulan's "Reflection" always brings me to tears (though only the Lea Salonga version):

11. Electric Six - Boy Or Girl (Señor Smoke) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m0bamb60nu4#)
Something about how being trans makes it hard to find a good job. I guess.
I thought for sure I'd see Lola by The Kinks, and that Rocky Horror song. But instead there's all these songs I've never heard of!
It may not necessarily be about gender issues. But I think it can. :D And of course the guys are really cute.

With the talent and musicians on this site I am surprised that some of the groups haven't started making, performing and distributing their own music. It seems like a rather good way to get others to understand the feelings, emotions and trials of being transgendered. If nothing else they could make it clear.
I don't really know French all that well... but if you watch the video, it's pretty obvious that the song talks about something like gender issues.
Narcys - Toi T'en Reves (Censored version) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HAMAF_zm9wI#)
It's called "Toi T'en Reves" by: Narcys. If anyone is able to translate it, I would certainly appreciate it.
Ooh, speaking of French songs, this is one of my favorites about gender (with a video of the all-male band playing it in dresses): Placebo - burger queen(french) live (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_pStetRoWvc#) Here are the lyrics in English: http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/placebo/burgerqueen.html. (http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/placebo/burgerqueen.html.)
Edit: Also, I just remembered a classic that sort of needs the video. . . Queen - I want to break free (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9hMrY8jysdg#)

There are acts around that do that. In Sydney where I'm from there's Jade Starr and Mechanical Black and probably more. I will never sing about it though.

When I was a kid I used to sing man I feel like a man when that song was on ::)
There's also "You Make Me Feel Like A Natural Woman" by Aretha Franklin. Okay, not SPECIFICALLY about gender issues, but I've sort of adopted it. And the first time I was out shopping for female clothes, it came on over the loudspeakers when I was waiting for a fitting room...

Take a walk on the wild side, by Lou Reed.
Lady Godiva, by Velvet Underground.
Candy Says, by Velvet Underground.
Boys, by Bauhaus (could be about a crossdresser or a ->-bleeped-<-, I'm not quite sure).
"Dude Looks Like a Lady," by Aerosmith.
"Somebody Told Me," by The Killers.
And what was that song by The Who that somebody posted a few months ago?
I always thought "A Boy Named Sue" was amusing because it ends with some remark that he's going to name his kid George. The first time I heard that song, Boy George was still pretty popular.

Listening to it again, I'm not sure that this one would go down to well here but I think that if you know The Vandals, they are not the type of group to be transphobic but they do have a very silly sense of humour.

Hokey Pokey by Linda and Richard Thompson ("The boys down the alley with their heels and their make up they know just what to do")

Okay, old-timers (Janet Lynn ... who beat me to the punch on this one!, Rejennyrated, Colleen Ireland), remember these guys?
The kinks lola (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wqdFffh0YVs#)
The Time: About 1977-1978 or thereabouts. The Place: Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, U.S.A. The Event: The Kinks, Live & In Concert.
And, of course, the vignette: My number-one hippie pal and I are cruising about town in yet another cannabis-beclouded phantasmagoria. Out of the clear blue sky, he turns to me and says: "Hey, man, The Kinks are in town. Let's check 'em out!" Of course, I hemmed and hawed and basically begged-off doing that. Wasn't up for concert chaos. He said, "Bull->-bleeped-<-! We're goin' to the concert!" He was driving, so away we went.
Folks, Ray and Dave Davies and the rest of The Kinks came out done-up in their original mid-1960s, short-style haircuts and suits looking for all the world like the squarest nerds you ever saw ... like M.B.A. business geeks, or something. Then, they opened the show with THIS song! Un-f_____g-believable, mind-blowing, knock-out rendition of this song!!!" They jammed the song and it was about 3 times as long as the recorded version. They kicked a___ from here to The Promised Land and back! The freakin' place went WILD! Alllrrriiightttt!!!
One of the best memories of my lifetime! Like, during this song, I'm silently dying a million deaths! You all KNOW why! :D
IMHO, this is the best gender-issues-related song of them all.
@ Colleen Ireland:
The Kinks were not nearly as big-time as The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, but they were big in the same time-frame. It was pretty easy to miss out on them. They did not get as much air-play as they deserved.
IMHO, here's the next-greatest gender-issues-related song of them all:
Aerosmith - Dude (Looks Like A Lady) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nf0oXY4nDxE#)
Boston's own Aerosmith! Back in The Day, we used to call them "The Poor Man's Rolling Stones," but I liked the heck out of them. If you are younger, you may not have heard and/or seen THIS song, but it still gets air-play here in the Great PNW. Check out this video. It's a real hoot! I love it! Man, like, crank ... it ... UP! About a third of the way through, I can't help but jump up and get into some major air-guitar playing and riffing-out with Joe Perry on leads. Hooo-haaa!!!
:D Lacey
I do remember the song, but only in a peripheral way, and never really knew the words. THANKS! We used to jam that song sometimes, but I think the Kinks were pretty much over by the time I was "into" music. When I was young, there was the Beatles, Beach Boys, et al, and when I was older, there was Yes, Cat Stevens, Led Zep et al. Kinda overlooked the Kinks...
@ Maldita:
Mal! That is so cool that you're into Lou Reed and into The Velvet Underground! Alright!
That somebody your age even knows about them, let alone is into them, is way awesome. They were hardly mainstream. Did you like Nico, man? She was hot back in The Day! Ever listen to Robert Fripp and King Crimson? Would not surprise me if you have!
Dude, you know your stuff, man ... ROCK ON! :D
Yeah, LaceyLynne, awesome to meet another Velvet fan! I like Nico, she has a very unique, beautiful voice. She always looked so sad in pictures.
I also like early Pink Floyd. Set the controls for the heart of the sun...
Nico and Siouxsie Sioux have somewhat similar voices, the kind of "deep", slightly "strange" voices. They also look "strange", both very beautiful, ice queens, untouchable ladies.
I got into Bauhaus, Velvet Underground, discovered girls and sex, and started feeling my body was alien at about the same time. Being 12 was craaaaaazy, a crazy time, the bad stuff was awful but the good stuff was great!
I'm going with The Killers....
Mr. Brightside seems like the "he" and "she" in the song are the same person.
Now I'm falling asleep
And she's calling a cab
While he's having a smoke
And she's taking a drag
Now they're going to bed
And my stomach is sick
And it's all in my head
But she's touching his-chest
Now, he takes off her dress
Now, letting me go
I know it's probably not what the song is about but it works for me. There's also Somebody Told Me
Well somebody told me
You had a boyfriend
Who looked like a girlfriend
That I had in February of last year
It's not confidential
I've got potential
Not a lot beats this one for me....

This is majorly rare and historic footage. The sound level, of course, tends to be somewhat low, so you may have to turn it up to enjoy the song. Again, this is real footage of the real characters at the real place this song is about.
@ The Moderators:
Gals, bear with me on this, please. Yes, this video is edgy. Yes, this song is edgy. Yes, this is truly historic. Hence, kindly forebear me this "walk on the wild side" by way of my posting this video just this one time.
Thanks!
@ Cruella:
Of course, you love THIS song. I know I do! This IS, arguably, THE greatest gender-related-issues song of them all. That can RIGHTLY be said. Also, please understand that I'm not doing "one-upmanship" by reposting this song here. These are the actual characters in the actual place the song is about. That's the only reason I posted this vid. Some folks might like to actually see them. I agree with you that this song is like no other. It really is. Finally, music is my all-consuming and jihad-like passion!!! Can't get enough!

Postscript: Hon, I'm glad you always knew what your fate would be. I never dreamed this would be me. I always knew something was wrong, way wrong, but never knew what until I underwent gender counseling. Sigh, ... ::) Estrogen makes me feel SOOO good, and ... BREASTS!!!

@ Cruella:
Perfect Day! Oh, my God, hell YES! Agreed that it's totally amazing!
You know, I envy (in a good way) you a thing or two. First, that you are in Britain. Sure, it has it's issues. Every place does; however, I think it's amazing in so many ways. Second, you are an art school grad of the 1970s. We're the same age, moreorless, and I'd SO go to ART school if I had to do it over again. Teachers in junior high and high school were pushing me in that direction. Third, and finally, you've just finished up on your GRS/SRS. >:( ;) :D Envy, envy, envy!!!
A very good friend of mine on here has mentioned how cool it would be to go to England. I must agree. Merry Olde England would have her, but I don't think they'd want me. Well, I can just visit her. My best to you always, Cruella! :D Lacey

Remeber it? Girl, I used to sing along with it whenever it came on the radio in my grade-school days ... all the time! As a benchmark for my time-frame, I turn age 55 in about a week-and-a-half. Beatles or Stones songs? Know and love darned near all of them!
Music is "My Thing!" I bagged college in my senior year there ... to become a small-time disc jockey on the radio ... for 20+ years? Why did I do such a stupid thing? Because, I loved my job! Can't get enough music!!! It's way cool that so many people on this thread know all of these great tunes. This is a way awesome thread ... love it! :D Lacey

I'm quite surprised that nobody has mentioned Androgyny by Garbage.
Video: Garbage - Androgyny (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gmfZYY0XlFs#ws)
Some quotes from Garbage's lead singer on the album:
"Everyone has both a female and male part. One rules, but the other can't be canceled. Boys and girls together... an ideal situation."
- Shirley Manson
"I dream a lot about being a boy. I don't know whether it's because our new single is called 'Androgyny,' but for some reason, in the last couple of weeks, I've been dreaming that I'm this weird, freaky-looking guy."
- Shirley Manson
Lyrics:
When everything is going wrong
And you can't see the point in going on
Well nothing in life is set in stone
There's nothing that can't be turned around
Nobody wants to feel alone
And everybody wants to love someone
Out of the tree go pick a plum
Why can't we all just get along?
Boys in the girls room
Girls in the men's room
You free your mind in your androgyny
Boys in the parlor
They're getting harder
I'll free your mind and your androgyny
No sweeter a taste that you could find
Than fruit hanging ripe upon the vine
There's never been an oyster so divine
A river deep that never runs dry
The birds and bees they hum along
Like treasures they twinkle in the sun
Get on board and have some fun
Take what you need to turn you on
Behind closed doors and under stars
It doesn't matter where you are
Collecting jewels that catch your eye
Don't let a soulmate pass you by
That reminded me...
The Replacements - Androgynous (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UBKGYi4Ig1o#)
Lyrics:
Here come Dick, he's wearing a skirt
Here comes Jane, y'know she's sporting a chain
Same hair, revolution
Same build, evolution
Tomorrow who's gonna fuss
And they love each other so
Androgynous
Closer than you know, love each other so
Androgynous
Don't get him wrong and don't get him mad
He might be a father, but he sure ain't a dad
And she don't need advice that'll center her
She's happy with the way she looks
She's happy with her gender
Mirror image, see no damage
See no evil at all
Kewpie dolls and urine stalls
Will be laughed at
The way you're laughed at now
Now, something meets Boy, and something meets Girl
They both look the same
They're overjoyed in this world
Same hair, revolution
Unisex, evolution
Tomorrow who's gonna fuss
And tomorrow Dick is wearing pants
And tomorrow Janie's wearing a dress
Future outcasts and they don't last
And today, the people dress the way that they please
The way they tried to do in the last centuries
@ Rayalisse, JessicaGurl and Nathan:
All of you, thank you so much! You've introduced me to this fantastic music that I didn't even know about! I'm grateful. ;)
Okay, I admit it: I'm way out-of-date. However, I'm always willing to learn new things. I never even knew these songs existed. They're so good. Androgyne by Garbage was especially amazing. What a video. The girl singing the song is hot!
Also, Namoli Brennet's "I'm not the Thorn" really hits home. What this song displays is what I live and feel ... all the time. Granted, I'm older; however, if I were her age, it would still be my experience. :'(
Thanks for turning me on to these new, great tunes.

Garbage - Cherry Lips (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pqaUZkf52fs#)
She gave you everything she had
But she was young and dumb
She'd just turned twenty-one
She didn't care to hang around
So when the ->-bleeped-<- came down
Why she was nowhere to be found
This life can turn a good girl bad
She was the sweetest thing
That you had ever seen
You're such a delicate boy
In the hysterical realm
Of an emotional landslide
In physical terms
With your cherry lips and golden curls
You could make grown men gasp
When you'd go walking past them
In your hot pants and high heels
They could not believe
That such a body was for real
It seemed like rainbows would appear
Whenever you came near the clouds would disappear
Because you looked just like a girl
Your baby blues would flash
And suddenly a spell was cast
You hold a candle in your heart
You shine the light on hidden parts
You make the whole world wanna dance
You bought yourself a second chance
Go Baby Go Go
We're right behind you
Go baby Go Go
Yeah we're looking at you
Go baby Go Go
I always liked this one.

You make a really good girl
As girls go
Still kind of look like a guy
I never thought to wonder why
If I could pull this off
Would I know for certain
The real situation
Behind the curtain
So beautiful
damsel in distress
Not exactly natural
Stunning none the less
What happened to you?
To make you more girl than girls are
Would you ever show or tell
Cause you're so good so far
You make a really good girl
As girls go
As girls go
As girls go
As girls go
As girls go
Let's chronicle
The dark side of the life
Did you ever keep the date
With the steel side of the knife
Doesn't matter to me
Which side of the line
You happen to be
At any given time
You make a really good girl
As girls go
As girls go
As girls go
As girls go
As girls go

Born in the Wrong Body, by Danielle Ate the Sandwich
She's also done a guitar version. :) I love this girl; she's awesome.
Glad someone put this video up, she's very talented, I also think Handsome girl fits this category

Thanks for putting up Handsome Girl! I forgot about that one. :)
I absolutely love Danielle; she's my ukulele idol. I'm learning a lot of her songs right now on my uke.
Yes, thanks, Talitha! I sent links to her songs to a friend who's having a hard time with me right now...
I am a BIG fan of Suzanne Vega
Suzanne Vega - As Girls Go (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ea6CuN59EU#)and The Manic Street Preachers
The Manic Street Preachers - Born a Girl (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uFgkZslPAM0#)Contains the line: 'And I wish I had been born a girl and not this mess of a man'. When I first got that album in 1998 I used to play that song over and over in my room and just cry.

I speak French.
Toi t'en rêves, toi t'en rêves, de leur montrer qui tu es,
Et t'en crèves, et t'en crèves, de n'pas pouvoir exister
Dans tes rêves, dans tes rêves, tu ne veux qu'être aimer !
Et t'en crèves, et t'en crèves, t'as mal à en crier !You dream, you dream, of showing them who you are,
And you die, you die, from not being able to exist
In your dreams, in your dreams, you just want to be loved!
And you die, you die, it hurts you to scream!
Quand il s'prenait pour un cow-boy, toi tu recoiffais ta poupée,
Et tu passais les heures à te demander si ça s'faisait,
Tu regardais ta mère toujours si calme, toujours si douce,
Tu regardais ton père et tes yeux tombaient sur tes pieds...When he played a cowboy, you you restylled your doll's hair,
And you spent hours asking yourself if it was complete,
You watched your mother always so calm, always so soft,
You watched your dad and your eyes fell to your feet...
Maintenant il joue avec les filles, toi tu restes au fond d'la cours...
Si sûr de lui, comme tu l'envie ! mais ton coeur brûle d'amour...
T'écris des lettres que t'envoie pas, il les lirais même pas,
Il penserait même pas que c'est toi puisqu'il ne te voit pas ...Now he plays with the girls, you you stay in the back of the class...
So sure of himself, as you desire! but your heart burns from love...
You write letters which you don't send, he wouldn't read them anyway,
He wouldn't evn think that it is you as he doesn't see you...
How about "Rebel, Rebel"? I think it only has the one line, though.
Bob Seger's trans:
Quote
Well you walk into a restaurant,
Strung out from the road,
And you feel the eyes upon you
As you're shakin' off the cold.
You pretend it doesn't bother you,
But you just want to explode.
Most times you can't hear 'em talk,
Other times you can,
All the same old cliches,
"Is that a woman or a man?"
And you always seem outnumbered,
You don't dare make a stand.
Forgot to add this earlier

Arch, are you talking about David Bowie's "Rebel, Rebel?" If so, man, that's such a great song!
one of my personal faves - "young james dean" by the band girlyman (if you're interested in gender-folk/gender-pop with country undertones and beautiful harmonies, girlyman is your band!)
the music video! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ue_ia7Dikq0#ws)
I guess I'll feel less than real all my life
With these feathers I made
Under me lifting me up
But I was a young James Dean
With a way with ladies
All the real boys in their black jeans called me crazy
someone already posted my fav 'im a boy' by the who ^ ^
but that line in Rebel, rebel, Arch, is "You've got your mother in a whirl, she's not sure if you're a boy or a girl"
oh but, heres a song that i think is more so ->-bleeped-<-, but could be a transgender song too ;P
pink floyd arnold layne (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EQTFRq1hjtM#)
about a guy that goes around stealing womans clothes from clothesline and wears them around
This thread is too fun for me not to revive it.
My contribution doesn't deal specifically with gender identity I guess, but it always struck a chord with me on that front:

How about "Josephine" by Terrorvision?
I had a friend called Joe,
When friends were hard to find,
He had a restless soul,
And something on his mind,
One day I went away,
and then returned to the scene,
Not to find restless Joe no,
But to find Josephine,
I asked her what her game was,
She said Joe had left the scene,
I asked her what her name was,
And she said.......They call me Josephine.
It took a while to click,
But then I got the gist,
The girl by my side,
Was the guy I'd missed,
I took her for a beer,
To talk about old times,
Just to find that beer,
Was now a sweet white wine,
I asked her what her game was,
She said Joe had left the scene,
I asked her what her name was,
And she said.......They call me Josephine.
So we talked all night,
And I just can't pretend,
Although I lost old Joe,
I got a new girlfriend,
I asked her what her game was,
She said Joe had left the scene,
I asked her what her name was,
And she said.......They call me Josephine.
I asked her what her game was,
She said Joe had left the scene,
I asked her what her name was,
And she said.......They call me Josephine.
TERRORVISION - JOSEPHINE (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AECWwR3tosM#)
"Billy Jones" by the Waifs. I can't find a good version of it on Youtube though.
When I listen to "When I Was a Boy" by Dar Williams, I feel like both the girl who says "when I was a boy" and the boy who says "when I was a girl." Is that weird?
Against Me! - Thrash Unreal (Video) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rzJ21OpFnZ0#)
the lead singer actually revealed being transgender.
