Just wondering what everyones thoughts are on autotune?
imho I really like it, I think it makes a different sound for music and it can work really well for RnB music witch I love!
The one thing I don't like is that people think anybody can use autotune and make it sound good, as in you need no singing talent to use it. I sing and if you can't hold a note it will sound terrible!!!
It can make a bad singer sound ok, but can make a great singer sound amazing!!!
Your Thoughts???
I find it makes me nauseous ...well except when people use it in humorous ways such as:
Smoking Lettuce: Auto Tune the News #5 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1dqTrUpmwPg#)
lols.
Personally I think it has been overused to the point where it is unimaginative, repetitious and boring.

Yeah, I don't listen to the kind of music where they use it noticeably but when I hear it on the radio it irritates me. Sick of hearing it, it does not sound good.
Simple answer: No. Make me nauseous and gives me a headache.
only if it's this

*edit* when I preview there's videos, but when I post it turns into links, that's weird.
I don't mind autotune if it is inconspicuous and not "in your face" - like if a solo artist uses autotune to create the backing vocals - I think Kenny Rogers used to do that to create harmonies where he was singing the melody with his voice looped back through autotuned to create a harmony or chorus track / backing vocal track, thus allowing him to sing a multi-part harmony, live without pre-recording a backing track or requiring backup singers.
Sometimes its just a fun gimmick (like Black Eyed Peas "I Gotta Feeling" - although I even wonder on that track if the the autotune is being used to cover up crappy / lazy vocal skills (see Ke$ha for multiple examples as well), or if you want to sound like you're a singing robot I guess autotune can help you get that sound...
Anyway, I think autotune has legitimate uses but has unfortunately recently seen its "killer app" in fixing mediocre vocal skills.
Being someone that put allot of time and effort into developing a decent singing voice I'm not sure if I like it or not
It depends on how and how much it is used... I get a kick out of some of the comedy stuff but that robotic sound kinda grates on my nerves after awhile
It's a tool at the end of the day, that's it. Trust me it will be used on pretty much every commercially produced track out there and has been for years as a corrective tool (sometimes you just don't have time for things in the studio and it's a handy little shortcut if a singer is having an off day). This kind of use is a lot different to using it as an effect, pushing vocals so that they take on that robotic edge...which is cool, but very overdone.
I produce electronic music and i know things like this can be used in very imaginative ways, you can effectively 'tune' any sound to a required pitch...it doesn't have to be used on vocals. They key is thinking outside the small cardboard rectangular thing.
Like Zero Punctuation would put it,..
Short answer; No.
Long answer; NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Exactly. Like most sound production tools this can be used in many different ways, and is overdone in some ways and completely inconspicuous in others. I agree with you Helena (also as an artist and producer) that some applications of this tool are overdone as well. I hate it to be obviously masking crappy vocals but it can really make a talented artist shine and you never know it to listen to it. Also the other uses for pushing other sounds (besides vocal tracks) through it are fun and useful as well. At the end of the day its just another brush to use on your audio canvas.

This is the one that floats my boat..... :D
OBAMA SINGS KICK ASS SONG?!?! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yghFBt-fXmw#ws)
you know, that one was just "good" until we got to the "list of experts" and that put it in the "best of all time!" category...and i'm not even a big Obama fan.
As a comedy device, I LOVE it (though i assume, like LOL Cats and Rick-rolled, it will lose some shine after a while)
As a device for actually attempting to produce serious music, frankly, I'm too unfamiliar with the results to comment.
Cindy bravely faces her computer. Checks if there are any eight year old boys next door to program my new television, No! Oh Goddess. What do I do :o
What's autotune? she asks while placing a brown paper bag over her face.
I'll sit here and pretend the last ten years have not happened. Someone 'twitted' me yesterday, I went to the Dr to see if it gave infections. No, she said, it's a bit like facebook. My blank expression raised the possibility of dementia. You do use Facebook? Why I responded? To meet people you don't know. "Why I responded?" So you have friends to share explicit details about you life with, when you have never met them. " That sounds good, as I strip to my garter belt and thong to do an on line random Skype. Hi I'm Cindy, I don't want to meet you, talk to you or even know you, but you can put pictures of my genitals on your face book page and twitter about them.
Within minutes Cindy realizes she has thousands of new friends who deeply wish to explore her psych. Seemingly most of her psych is focused in her lingerie.
Strange; she thinks. Must be the twitter germ.
Sorry people
Just having fun
Cindy.
And don't T or F or S me.
But what is autotune?

When used as an effect, particularly in electronic based music it is OK. Various vocal effects boxes have been used over the years.
I don't like the Simon Cowell type use of the technology. It has lead to a lot of minor talents squeezing out real talent. Why learn to sing properly when it can all be fixed on a computer?
It leads either to disappointment for fans at concerts or miming.
Generally not a big fan of of it, seems to be way overused IMO, however I enjoyed this

Good one Z
It does remind me of when I was doing stuff with bands and we used our good ol' rack mount effects stuff as tools and/or toys ::)
There was one that you could change the pitch of your voice with and we would entertain friends that came over by telling stories and changing the pitch to make the voices of the various characters in the story ;D

Fun w electronics! I used to make weird underwater sounds with flangers ;D
I've always liked Laurie Anderson's use of pitch modulation on voice.

hahaha that was awesome :D (but now the bed intruder song is stuck in my head)
I hate it.
It has lead to a lot of minor talents squeezing out real talent.
Talent is the least of what it takes to be a star.
It's like, you give a man a Les Paul guitar and he becomes Eric Clapton, and of course that's not true. And if you give a man an amplifier and a synthesizer, he doesn't become, you know, whoever; he doesn't become us.
Roger Waters
Autotune in hilarious. Best comedy gag music has played on us since American Idol.
The joke in American Idol though is almost always on the 'winner'. Of all the people who've gone through that how many real 'stars' did we get? One?
I'll put this in IT terms first. I know a lot of people who can write code, some of them can write perfect code, a few of them even make it to elegant code. Yet they are total failures in most IT jobs. Because they get hosed on the fact that the company does not only want it prefect, they don't only want it elegant - they also want it Tuesday. That pressure folds a lot of them like a house of cards.
So, being able to do one killer song to what amounts to an audience of four does not translate into doing 90 minutes to 2,000 people. Yeah, almost everyone knows some kid who can sit on the bed and shred like a MoFo. But playing some riff on your bed - no matter how good it is - is not being able to stand and deliver for 90 minutes on demand, every night.
So like old Rodger was trying to say, I could put you in the EMI Abbey Road studios, with all the Pink Floyd instruments, electronics and toys - but the odds of you walking out with the next DSotM are pretty slim. Nah, they are absolutely non-existent unless you're as good as Rodger, and are walking in with Dave, Nick and Rich, right?
Same thing with auto-tune. Yeah, it worked for Cher, killer effect in that song. But that's all it was, an effect. Cher (who has spent more time in a recording studio than a lot of people have in bed) is pretty much pitch perfect, and so you're starting with gold, not trying to end there.

I really like autotune. I thought I was the only one.
Initially pretty cool, now pretty redundant.
It's okay, I don't mind it if I like the song.
