Title: today I somewhat
Post by: Michael Joseph on September 19, 2010, 08:36:04 PM
Came out as trans to my mom. I told her that I wasn't actually a lesbian, but I wanted to be a boy my whole life. She asked me if other people "like me" meaning lesbians I guess, wanted to be boys and i said no its different. She asked me if i'm satisfied living in the body that I am now and I said no. She was really good about it, although I could tell it was hurting her. She was very respectful of everything I had to say. I haven't talked to her about transitoning yet, but this was def a start!

Congrats, dude. Whenever I tell my mom, she definitely won't react the same way. She's very transphobic.  :-\

Congrats! One of the hardest parts--coming out to your parents--is behind you. Let's hope she doesn't pull a complete 180 after it all sinks in.

Well, it's good that she's asking you questions.  She may be hurt and confused but seems to still be trying to understand.

Hope everything goes well for you.

That's exactly what my dad did recently  :-\. I came out to him almost 2 years ago and at the time he was real supportive. But now, he's been ignoring and avoiding it (understandable I guess) and after all this time he decided to tell me "I think you're wrong....".  :o seriously, I was sort of taken aback. So make sure your mum knows of your intentions and is clear about what transitioning really entails.

Congrats! That's a big step.
My mother is one of the most supportive people in the world, but she had a hard time at first. Just adjusting - the name, pronouns, etc, can be hard on even the most wonderful parent. You have to expect some slip-ups with those things in the beginning. I still make sure to express my gratitude with the little things - like when she remembers to use adjectives like "handsome". Just remember to be really appreciative of any bit of acceptance she gives you (even if it comes in the form of awkward questions). It's really amazing to have parent support at all - some people never get any.

I'm glad it went well for you. I was outed to some extent to my parents, since I was scared and living a double life. I still feel like I'm living a double life (family vs. friends), but at least I'm not in the closet anymore. I wish I would have taken the initiative to come out sooner. But anyway...

Congrats
