The U.S. military is not the only difficult environment for gay and lesbians. A new research study on the experiences of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people on college and university campuses across the country reveals high rates of harassment and a lack of inclusiveness in policies and programs.

*One-third of LGBT (33%) and transgender (38%) students, faculty, and staff have seriously considered leaving their institution due to the challenging climate.

I wonder what the numbers would be if you removed religious beliefs?

*sigh*

I wonder if the world is ever going to change for better.

As Julie said, I've got the feeling that religion has played a HUGE role in the source of hate against us. To make it worse, it's unjustified.

Is religion really significant in this context?

I have always found that the greatest problem is the social pressure for boys to be matcho.

But... why?

Is it maybe because of our evolutionary past?

Some of the problem is what colleges have become today.  Competition for grades, status, progression toward a degree in the colleges is fiercely stressed in both students and faculty.  Some of the harrassment comes from opportunism on finding ANYTHING on ANYONE that will make them weaker than you and therefor less in competitive status in that microcosm of academia.  Its a cheap shot, and there are other "weakneses" that are exploited too, but some of them have "social blessing" that take them out of exploitation in some colleges, and yes religion is ONE of the "social blessings" at many church originated colleges.  Its chldhood bullying grown heavier and taller.  :'(
