Title: hair loss on head
Post by: missyzanta on October 01, 2010, 06:00:45 AM
Had my surgery in may and now I am losing all of my hair on my head.  Has this happened to anyone else and did it come back and if it did what did anyone do?

No but I do know that hormonal disruptions, such as after childbirth, do sometimes cause this. Often it is temporary, although sometimes not so. It really depends on why - which you need to find out from a doctor who specialises in such things.

In addition when your T level falls your existing hair does tend to become a lot finer in quality and that can make it look thinner even though it is still all present.

My hair was coming out a lot more the first few months after surgery, but I wouldn't call it losing all my hair. It definitely slowed back to normal amounts now, but it was a lot at first. There was hair everywhere it seemed.

My hair has been thinning a lot over the last year!!!! :( Ive been on all my hormones and anti andro's and never really miss any dose's  It was bothering me so much so that i couldn't take it any more and got my orchie in Feb thinking that it would help but it hasn't, not much. I take hair skin & nail vitamins, Flax seed oil. I'm even using 5% minoxidil.

I would say from my experience the BEST place to start is go see your endocrinologist.  Your endo can determine if its something like a iron deficiency or hormonal changes..etc  If all looks good there he'll refer you to a dermatologist. After that, last resort, a hair clinic. I have my apt on tuesday :( :(

I still have hair but i wanna make sure i do everything i can to keep what i have and possibly fix some of the thinning.

Im all about having nice hair!!!!

Yes, this is common after a surgery, not just GRS.  I don't know if it's related having anesthesia, or the stress of the surgery itself.  But, it should come back.  Also, as mentioned, your hormones could be out of whack because you stopped for a while before the surgery and now you need to find a new balance post-op.

I noticed something different today than just thinning hair... maybe we are wrong?

The hair has silkened all over. I no longer have thick heavy strands of hair. This change would have been more noticeable, yet my hair went dry and very light. The silkiness was obvious... yet the hair thinning was of concern also. Gobs of hair for years.

Lately, I been very careful with my hair. I don't like to use ties, bands or such anymore unless its just stuck there for a bit. I do have a wooden beaded one that is one, yet the other knot the hair and it breaks too easily even when trying to be careful. Luckily, I gotten into the habit to hold onto my hair before I pull. When it was heavy and thick, it didn't matter as anything could be done to it... even drag me by the hair, and it wouldn't break.

I needed a remedy today beside any drug. Oil. Choose your flavor. Just make sure it is a moisturizer.

After I applied the oil lightly all over, then I notice my hair didn't look thin anymore. Some of the hair had that "pantene" look, so the dryness hid that. Also, weight.. the dry silky hair stood up before it flowed back and down the back of the head. That created lots of space inbetween hair near the scalp. There was enough space to easily see the scalp all over. I looked and looked and there was no bald spot that started. After the oil, the hair laid flat off my head and couldn't see the scalp.

I'm an organic omnivore for more than a decade. I know that is cryptic, yet lets say I was vegan at one point and found that it was a luxury to be vegan. We can still narrow down to vegetarianism and follow vegan values. To buy vegan, however... well... rather buy bulk or farmers market. Hope this helps.

One I haven't made enough use out of is the spray in conditioners. They're mainly meant to spray on the ends on into the brush.

I spoke with my endocrinologist and he said it is probably from the anaesthesia.  I told him it just happened overnight and i had my surgery at the first of may.   He said it SHOULD come back, but it is so noticeable that i bought a wig but after wearing it for any hr, my hair started thinning more, so i CANT go the manufactured hair route if it might come back because false hair damages what ever is there naturally.

I would agree that coming off hormones twice this year has caused more hair-loss than usual...

But its not critical yet, but bl##dy annoying for sure.....

As I've only been back on Hormones a few days or so I've yet to see if it all goes back to normal....

But life for us TG chix ain't ever easy.....lol

Believe it or not the anti dandruff shampoo Nizoral actually helps re hair loss. As a bodybuilder I know a lot of women who use this in the sport and get good results.....
