Title: don't chop up pills
Post by: bella-ts on October 16, 2010, 07:53:12 AM
Hi,  I have some hormone tablets, but they were a bit high-dosage, so I thought, chop one up.
Turned out to be a toughie and I more or less ended up sawing it with the knife, it broke, and lots of dust.  Annoying you might say.  But, worse than that, as I was looking closely at what I was doing (small tablet) and found out what it's like to snort these this stuff.  Not fun cos instant mini-overdose, low blood pressure etc etc.  So, abandoned that room, left the window open for 20 hours or so to clear the dust.  Go back in there three days later, and have a rummage around for stuff and, same again, but not so bad this time.  So, now I need some biohazard gear to detox the room.

So, get lower dosage tablets, it's lot less hassle!

Ouch! Chopping pills is bad indeed...You can take it to almost any pharmacy and ask them to do it for you though. They used to do it to my anti-depressants since they didn't offer the low dose I needed by default.

They make special devices to split pills for under $10.  I use them all the time for other medications I am on (they don't make the strength my doctor wants me to take for my thyroid so he ordered a higher dose and I split them).  My mess, no fuss, done right inside a container.

The little plastic pill choppers are great. My insurance company sent me one, and I use it faithfully for my spiro (except when my pharmacy gives me the ones that snap cleanly down the middle).

Never chop up ANY pill without your doctor's express permission.  Particularly with CR, some pills are designed to let the drug loose over time; by compromising the CR mechanism, you're getting it all at once, and putting yourself at risk.  This particularly applies to things like benzos and narcotics, but they certainly aren't the only cases; I've heard of a lot of people who have OD'd on the new oxy 36 tabs because of this.

I think I'll not ever be trying that again, two days after my post that stuff is still floating around.  Gonna get an industrial dust-mask and then vacuum and wet-wipe the whole place.  Good thing I'm not sharing with anyone :)

I was given the wrong dose when I picked up my E one time (twice what it was suppose to be)

I went to the pharmacy and asked about it... They pointed out that there is a small split line down the middle of the tab and hooked me up with an easy to use pill splitter

My dosage has been adjusted a few times since... But hey, if I ever need it again... I've got a pill splitter up in my cupboard
