Title: Mississippi?
Post by: Dee on December 19, 2006, 06:25:45 PM
Ok this is a longshot :P  Does anyone know of any transgendered groups in Mississippi?  I have googled for information, and I saw where there was a group in Bilouxi, MS, but when I went to their page it was only for gay and lesbien.  Any ideas would be appreciated :)

Hi Dee,

Kosciusko, MS 39090
phone (662) 289-3631

Aurora Transgender Support
PO Box 1306
Florance, MS 39073-1306
(601) 845-1328
Support group for transgendered persons

Beta Chi#,
PO Box 31253, Jackson, MS 39286-1253
Phone: (601) 982-7678

I did not see any reference to their websites, so perhaps they do not have one.  I hope this info is useful.  Have a wonderful day and take care. :)

Sorry it took me so long.  It seems like Mississippi has a general lack of resources for TG/TS/CD individuals.  I did find one group in Memphis however.  They're called Perpetual Transition.

Memphis Gay and Lesbian Community Center
892 South Cooper St., Memphis, TN 38104
901-278-6422
PERPETTRANS@YAHOO.COM
http://www.mglcc.org/perpetualtransition (http://www.mglcc.org/perpetualtransition)

Good luck to you.  :)

There is also a support group in the Jackson metro area, which can be found on facebook under the name "Transgender Support Group of Ms"

I can't believe there's another person in Mississippi.

Anyway, there's a group called the Mississippi Rainbow Alliance and the meets take place in Gulfport, MS and Jackson Mississippi.  http://www.msrainbowalliance.com/ (http://www.msrainbowalliance.com/)  It seems to be really good, and I hope it is but I haven't been to a meeting yet.

Several of us in MS apparently, besides those who have posted in this thread there are at least two others here.

Sally, I've been mulling the idea of starting a North MS Group once I get the situation at home settled one way or the other.

I won't be real skilled at first but I like the idea of moving things forward around here.

(that's assuming I don't relocate)

Apologies for necroing the thread, but I too live in MS and wonder what kind of support exists? Most info around the web seems to be old, outdated & broken.  I'm in Starkville.

I'm...a hundred miles or so? ...north of you. PM me if you want to connect on FB or whatever. I can tell you there's is next to no networking in North MS.

Apparently on the drag queens and me admit to being trans (and not all of them are) but i've been crying out for trans connections in the area.

(i think we have a few in the Jackson area including one or two who have posted here, but I haven't been able to keep in regular contact with them)

I'm one of the ones in the Jackson area, and down here we have a loose network with monthly get togethers, a TDOR observance annually, etc. But I don't hear much from up north, I'm afraid.

Still?

I thought you'd moved out west somewhere.

Good to know you are still about. We still need to run together sometimes (if I ever have any $$$!)

It would be cool if there were groups & stuff around here, I've been trying to find resources to start transition, but I have no idea where to start.

the Jackson folks, mentioned upthread, and on the coast is all I know about.  I make a pest of myself on facebook and wherever trying to find out if there's anyone else in North MS. There's me and Cyndi and a couple of girls who work drag. other than that, the 2 or 3 others I've spoken with are deep in the closet and wouldn't participate in a group or anything.

Hmm, well I suppose I might have to wait until I graduate in a year & move.  This area doesn't exactly seem to be the safest place to start transition, without support it might be nigh impossible.

depends on your personality. I did it. and not in a college town. And with a family to deal with. It's not really as bad as the whole "red neck Mississippi" meme would imply.

BUT

in terms of finding a therapist, a knowledgeable doctor? Maybe that would be difficult.

I know there's a doctor in Tupelo that's trans-friendly:

https://glmaimpak.networkats.com/members_online_new/members/dir_provider.asp?action=profile&location_type=Z&address_zip=38663&address_zip_radius=100&ind_id=11644

if it's worth that trip to you, but i don't know about therapists unless the college has a school of psychology - if they do they will see you and for a considerably better cost.

Thanks for the link, Tammy.  Do you know if this doctor prescribes hormones?

I'm in north Mississippi and would LOVE to see an in-person support group started here.  There is an online yahoo group, FTMs of Mississippi (or something like that; also it's open to MTFs as well), but it hasn't been very active in awhile.

I got the link from a web-site, I have no idea what services they provide but I'm strongly inclined to think they do.

Lol maybe we should start a group, have coffee some place, idk.  I know it's not that bad, but trying to figure out what I can do just gets intimidating, especially with almost no support.

connected with another MS girl on FB, 125 miles south of me...then the wife got pissed off when we made plans to meet up.

So I ended up moving to Jackson, is there still any kind of community here?

There's a growing community there. if you are on Facebook, look for the group "Transgender Support Group of MS"

if not, look for the Open Arms Clinic. they give space for monthly meetings and do some good treatment support too.
