Title: I Just Love to Carry a Purse !!!
Post by: erocse on October 25, 2010, 12:01:54 PM
My wife and I had a laugh over this. I have always made fun of her, for carrying such a large purse. I mean she has everything in her purse. OMG her purse in heavy too !! Honestly I don't know how she does it , without putting her back out.

About a month ago I went out presenting female for the first time. I thought I should carry a purse (though I had virtually nothing to put in it). Since then I go out allot.  Gradually my purse has gotten full. Last night at the theater my wife asked me my if I had a toothpick.( for those pesky popcorn kernels) Yes I sure did, in my purse. I also had a bit of trouble getting used to a cute new pair of shoes, and did I have a band-aid, I sure did !!! In my purse. Coming up with exact change  is not a problem anymore, In fact I think I can take myself out to lunch with the change in the bottom of my purse.  Oh and I don't just use it when I go out . It is now my lifeline to everything important to me. E.g. Cell phone, glasses, makeup, etc.

    Hugs, Erocse

Just don't do what I did years ago when I was a newly postop woman and go out late at night closing the self latching door behind you with your keys in your purse and your purse on the counter top in the kitchen!

I had to break into my own house!  and all the time I was doing it I was thinking, this is really going to take some explaining if someone calls the police... Fortunately no one did and I learned very quickly after that never to leave my purse out of my reach.

It's one of those inventions which is so useful that you have to wonder why men don't carry them too!

I have so much crap in my purse, I don't know how I survived as a male for so long.
I need everything I can fit into the thing.
I did forget it recently when we went out and I had just an awful time, everything I want or need is in that thing.

Well, i'm biologically female and i never used a purse in my entire life!
But my boyfriend... He have a bag, a notebook backpack that is almost a woman's purse  XD
His LIFE is in there! I don't know how he can carry all that heavy stuff with him everyday!  x..x
The only difference between his purse and a woman's one is in the contents... He don't carry makeup, but all sort of geek stuf, computer cables, calculator, stapler, ruler, RPG dices, Magic cards [from Magic the Gathering], sunglass, food, water, toothbrush, lot of papers and drawing stuff...
Neither my school's backpack have so many stuffs  x..x

I have a small purse, which has 4 pockets on the outside.  One is makeup, one is for cell phone, one for personal needs and one for whatever I need to carry at the time.

I also have it hang by my door so that I grab it as I am headed out the door.  This girl is never far from her world on her shoulder.  :D

I just don't know how anyone can stand dragging a bag around everywhere. It's always in the way...and if you keep it with you all the time it starts to fill up with so much crap.

But if you like it, more power to you :) I'd rather be able to take off running and climb a fence without getting caught than have a toothpick on demand, but I guess I can see how someone might choose the opposite.

Kyril,

Off the subject. But I have a confession to make. When I first started posting on Susan's . I carelessly mistook you for a mtf. ??? What's funny is I remember thinking, "that person should get a different avatar, cause they don't look the least bit feminine".

Congrats on starting T. You already look good, I can only imagine what T is going to do. 8)

Yes, purses are amazing! I know that from the...single time I was brave enough to be out in public with one. Back when my friends pretended they supported me, but that's aside from the point. I wasn't even trying to pass and nobody even looked at me funny for carrying it around. It was really convenient for that one day. I bought it at our fair with my friends, so that was the time I was carrying it around. We went to a restaurant afterwards and I brought it in with me... With my friend, as well as two people that I wasn't even out to... of who I told the purse was for a girlfriend.  (I actually did have one at the time. lol)

Now I've made myself sad. But seriously, purses are great. I don't know why it's so socially unacceptable for guys to carry them around. Just seems really stupid to me.

Sexy AND smart ... That WAY rocks in my book!

Okay, where's the Star Trek medical technology when you want it?  I'd have Dr. McCoy give this beard of mine to Kyril!  It'll be a hoot to watch your excitement whenever your own starts coming in, man.  Heck, I'd give you this voice too.

Incidentally, I'm finding "The Bag Trip" to be Awkward City.  Gonna take some time to get used to it.  In guy mode, you can just "run and gun."  Sometimes I get lazy and kind of miss that.  Am I at the lower end of somebody's purse spectrum somewhere?     :P

Total agree on that, You are a bit of a hunk, Kyril :embarrassed:

I have to admit my main handbag is full of everything, it's a Country Road soft leather and I reckon it has more utilities than a Swiss Army knife .

But I also love buying handbags, I really have to stop myself, a new shop opened recently and I reckon there was about 20 bags I wanted.

Put simply, purses > all.

I still have to go out as a guy, yet I feel incomplete without one. I mean, how can you possibly go out and feel safe without pencils, paper, a (whoa wait I need the dictionary for that) nail file, an umbrella, advils, ...

Whenever I can I use one of those reusable grocery bags. Not as fashionable or as practical as a real one, but it sure gets me less stares ~.

Kyril

You would just LOVE my purse contents (well I call it a bag really)

Obviously it has things like phone, keys, money, spare undies, pads (I do sometimes need them), and business cards... BUT it also often holds, two screwdrivers, A pair of pliers, a pair of cutters, a small adjustable wrench, a multimeter, a portable soldering iron, a roll of insulation tape, a connection block, a USB flash drive with a complete linux install on it...

All jolly good GUY stuff! Very handy for fixing your mates car, PC or TV set!

You can get some pretty huge handbags Janet :D ;)

as for Bags...they're amazing, never leave the house without one. My current bag of choice is pretty utilitarian, but then that was kind of the point, because it's glued to my hip even in boy mode. I have to be careful, with laptop, Camera, lotions and potions, bottle of water and other associated crap it can weigh a tonne. Does anyone have any antigravity field generators I could borrow to lighten the load somewhat?

I think the most exotic item in my handbag is a magnessium match. It is a piece of magnessium and flint and a knife to shave the magnesium and strik the flint.

What I always hated about carrying a purse was that it was
1) either on one side so it tended to slide down your shoulders or
2) you wore it cross-wise which looks weird and stresses your boobs.

So I got used to carry military purses (yes, they exist) tainted in black, these were unisex items at that time in my country and at least did not have offensive decoration and stuff on them, or I used neutral backpacks.

Lots of years later, and ladies, please listen here: I stumbled upon a gimmick in a store which you can put on the purse strap and thought it was a great idea. It's made of rubber or something like this and prevents the purse from sliding down your shoulder if you wear it on your shoulder. One of the most practical inventions of the century.

I actually switched down to a smaller bag...because my last one was so huge I couldn't tell whether my asthma meds were on board-those and the antihistamines need to go with me everywhere.
Either I put all my to-go stuff in one place or I won't remember it all.  Besides that, how does one achieve organization without multiple notepads, in their own separate zip-bag?  my ADD-spectrum self would like to know.

My current bag...is sold as an ammunition bag.  It's olive green, and quite practical, although I need to sew some extra c-clips on the top flap, because I cram so much in there....
Anything bought in a military surplus store=not very femme. It stays on my shoulder nicely, but can also be slung cross-body if I need to move fast (guess my boobs are small enough and the sports bra effective enough that the boobie-pinching isn't an issue, I guess.)
Plus, $12 new!

I carry my purse with me everywhere, it is my vade mecum (http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/vade_mecum).

I don't like separate wallets in purses. Every day I see women misplace them.

My purse has credit cards and ID's, notebook and pen, checkbook, handy, two pairs of glasses, a few dollars, a tiny rubber coin purse, house key, lipstick, perfume, a credit card size mirror without frame, a flash drive, headphones and feminine supplies.

I usually end up also carrying a big "green bag" (usually yellow!) for books, water, sandwiches, work clothes, umbrella, etc.

my regular bag is shoulder bag, maybe 12 x 8 inches multipatch Italian leather, creams and golds, contains, purse - UK purse is small and for holding coins and notes but mine just has coins and all notes and debit cards are in zipped pocket in case of thieves  - hairbrush, compact, lipstick, perfume, tapemeasure as I'm particular about getting clothes to fit nice, pen, notebook, keys, digicam, phone.
my boss has bigger holdall kind passed on from her daughter who bought on spur of moment and hated when she got home, other boss has the massive carryall with vast amount of stuff in it so when her phone rings she has a struggle to find it.

Feel this. How many of us have a bag that the phone disappears into? My bag explodes in some horrible ring tone that I thought was fun until the second it rings, I now look like an idiot and my phone is somewhere in  the bag telling me I am some sort of sexy bitch and I'm in a business meeting. :embarrassed: :embarrassed:

Was reading the thread because it seemed interesting and had to laugh at your last post Cindy. My mom got a new purse last week and decided on a new ringtone too. I don't know how many of you have heard of Lilly Allen but we were sitting in a quite restaurant & her phone goes off nice and loud with "There's just one thing that's getting in the way When we go up to bed you're just no good Its such a shame..." Took her five minutes to find it in her giant new purse.

Mine is small enough that only pens seem to vanish.  I have a pocket on the outside for my phone.  But I do get some looks when it goes off.  My ringtone is the Imperial Match for Star War.

mobile phones should have holes to thread tie/cords through to make them easy to retrieve but the men who design phones only have to fish them out of an empty pocket and can do so in a split second so don't know of the need for a hole. :D

I don't have a cell phone, so I can't lose it in my purse. Didn't expect to hear that in 2010 from a 19-year-old, huh ?

This is why there are protective cases with clips, lanyard holes, and other fastening options - for people who don't need to worry about the size or weight of their phones because they're just throwing it haphazardly in a big bag :) Also helps protect the phone when it's getting bashed around inside the bag.

Long time ago my wife and I were in Seaworld of Ohio with her parents.  My mother in law turned to me and said, "hold this," and handed me her purse whose weight just about ripped off my arm. Once at the beauty shop the owner needed some change, so she let her clean out the bottom of her purse where they found around $25 in various coins.....

I purposely carry a medium-sized purse – big enough for my journal and everything I need, but not big enough to load up.  (I do usually carry a 6-foot retractable tape measure.  You never know, right?)  When my daughter came to visit she picked up my purse and said: "What have you got in here?  You're going to ruin your back!"  I had a mess of change in the wallet.  Since then I've been better about keeping it pared down.

I try to change my purse daily, just for the discipline of cleaning it out regularly.  (See, it has nothing to do with my love of fancy purses. ::))  And you need a different purse for every outfit, right? ;)

(And BTW, lots of women's outfits have either NO pockets or pockets that are completely useless.)

No, it's because our society expects you to carry so much crap around that if you stuffed it all in your pockets you'd look like some sort of weird lumpy alien. To be a reasonably attractive, functioning woman with feminine gender expression, you need (at a moment's notice):
- money, cards, ID
- keys
- cellphone or address book
- makeup
- hair ties/ornaments
- materials for fixing your hair if it gets windblown or wet
- feminine hygiene products for yourself and others in need
- facial cleansers/makeup remover
- moisturizer
- bandaids/covers for blisters from your evil torture shoes
- sunscreen
- safety pins or fabric glue for when your flimsy clothes rip
- a nail file for when your long nails get chipped or broken
- clear nail polish for stocking runs and nail chips
- extra pair of stockings if applicable
- eyedrops for when your makeup irritates your eyes
- jewelry/accessories for dressing your look up/down through the day (men just remove or loosen articles of clothing)
- blotting towels/stain remover wipes for when you or any male in your vicinity spills something on clothes
- and so on and so forth. You're also often expected, if you're older and married, to carry medication and other necessary items for the man in your life.

Contrast with what men are generally expected to carry:
- money, cards, etc
- keys
- phone
- pen
- maybe pocket knife or lighter
and yet men's clothes are looser and have more room for pockets.

You always get me to smile, Kyril.

When living as a guy, as I got older my pants got bigger as well as my pockets. I always carried a screwdriver or two, a small adjustable wrench, a pocket knife, sometimes unspent ammo, then there was the hardware most of the time I had a couple of nuts, ¼ x 20 and a bolt or two, a couple of drywall screws and a couple of sheet metal screws. As well as the pen, phone, wallet,  keys (god my key ring was huge) :o I was ready for most anything. It was funny when I had to go through an airport check-in terminal or into a courtroom. Though that came in handy sometimes, my wife did not appreciate it if I left those things in my pockets on laundry day.

Oh and BTW if you do end up at the courthouse security with a knife and unspent ammo you can't just give it to them, even if you are already late and are going to miss your appointment.

Plus a hankie, comb, pens, a journal, and cough drops.  Sometimes a little camera (about cellphone size) and a tape measure.  Like most women where I live, I'm not a big makeup user.  It's more than I carried when presenting male, but not by much. :)

One reason I don't want to carry a large purse is because nature abhors a vacuum and the d*** thing would fill up.  Plus, then some guy would think it's OK for me to carry his stuff. >:(

I think it says more what kind of things you're expected to carry, than how much. women just aren't expected to have many functional things, and men aren't expected have many aesthetic or symbolic things.

Always wonder what to put in a clutch bag/purse. I've a really cute black suede with gold (real of course ) trimming. I reckon I could get a sanitary pad, a condom (ex boy scout) and my lippy. And that's it. I suppose if you are going to a do where you need a clutch you expect your partner to carry the rest, car keys, money, phone.

My wife doesn't carry a purse, ergo I conveniently get to pay because she neither has money or her credit cards with her, although her license is in the pocket of her coat or jeans.

Years ago I quit carrying a wallet in my back pocket which is a temptation to pick pockets.  The ever increasing numbers of cards I had to carry made it too bulky and caused back pain.

Nowadays when I go out I carry a kit for diabetic purposes in case I need to eat.  Other than my wallet I only carry my keys.  I once had a spare 9 volt battery in my pocket which got hot and could have exploded.  A gold plated key from Chrysler had connected the two posts giving a new meaning to hot pockets!

I carried a "man=purse" for years before I started to identify as trans-fem. Wallets cause sciatic nerve pain. I carried wallet, check-book, keys, cell-phone, meds, phone book/lists, kleenex, eye-drops, change, hand-lotion and so on. Very practical. No one hassled me. Well, I did get called "mam" once, but they apologized. I would like to say men can carry a purse, but maybe I am not a good example, since I have realized I am not really a man inside, my body notwithstanding.

I do not love my purse, and have had several near-disasters leaving it places, but I cannot live without it - even when I am dressed and acting male.

I don't go anywhere without my man-bag.  It's an extra small timbuk2 messenger bag.  It holds an ultrasonic nebulizer (for asthma), calendar, clip-on sunglasses, book, tissues, checkbook, and wallet.  Nobody questions why I carry it.

I don't like carrying a bag.  I find bags to be awkward, cumbersome, and inconvenient.  I prefer pockets.

I just love that choice of phrasing - "ex boy scout". Could mean a couple of things on this board.

Well I was just meaning, 'always be prepared', which has the same meaning

Hmmm all this talk of be prepared and boy scouts is making me think of a comic song from Tom Lehrer.

Oh and yes I too carry a condom - bizarrely in self defense because if I am ever raped I don't want any risk of nasty diseases.

But back to Tom Lehrer - with apologies for the slight derail - after Cindy I couldn't resist

Thanks Jenny,
I was thinking of that song and had no idea of how to find it.   :-*
I'm not too sure how you convince a rapist to put a condom on but it sounds like an interesting defense technique.

OK bad joke, Fill in the friends name to insult,  I hear XXX cuts the top of his condoms so he can use them more than once.

What was the Girl Guides Motto?

People, I know I can Google but it's more personal this way, and Hey that is what life is about. Friendship.

I was never in the guides as by that age everyone was sadly too gender conscious to let me go on bending the rules to THAT extent, despite the fact that I still did it in every other way possible.

But I do know the Brownies motto which was "Lend a hand" No s->-bleeped-<-ing at the back please.

All the sixes had mottos too. The only one of those I can still recite is the one for the sprites.

"Here we come the sprightly sprites
brave and bold just like the knights..."

etc - and please don't ask how I got to be a sprout sprite...  ;D It's a long story.

My Indian ammo bag has:
approximately 3-5  antihistamines at any given time...real pseudoephedrine, 3 antidepressants (as in TYPE) two different kinds of asthma inhalers, one asthma pill type, two mast cell stabilizers(one script, one an OTC supplement), a decongestant , vitamins, three notepads-each with a different purpose, an adjustable wrench, I.D.'s,  a bunch of discount shopping cards under made up names and fake addresses, cash, change, pens, a headlamp(GREATportable light!!!) one pair of unused latex gloves (for auto wrecks-I drive home late from work...and well, there's been at least once since I started my new job when a full first-aid kit would have come in handy...) my cellphone and charger thereof, a little mirror, tube of lipgloss and brown eyeliner pencil.  Those last three may come out as I hardly ever use them.
I have all that stuff inside zip-bags/card wallet that go inside the purse, so that it's all organized and can be easily checked for on-boardness before going to work.
And I want a leatherman-style tool to go in.

Scrunchies need to be cleaned out-I got the short haircut, which works for me nicely, and looks...androgyne enough to not make me feel emasculated, but still not fully male, and can be made to look girlier if I want/need.

My wife was a boy scout.  We camp when time-money-health allow...but gods forbid we actually have to pack all the stuff she brings camping to a hike-in site!  NOOO!  There will be no five-mile lug of an ice-filled Igloo cooler by yours truly!
I could live for a day on raw fruit, granola bars, tortillas, and rehydrated TVP, heated in a tiny pan over a tiny cookfire, or even crunched up uncooked...but somebody just has to burn herself scorched pancakes for breakfast, from scratch...on a coleman stove...
(I do love her, you know...really :))

Coming from the other direction, I am now the proud new owner of mens pants that actually fit my freakishly large hips, and oh my god the pockets!  Not only can I fit my hand into the pocket, I can do so with my keys, wallet, phone, and whatever else I want in there as well.  I feel like I have Batman's utility belt.  Also, there's a much smaller chance of forgetting my pants somewhere.  ;)

a tape measure

Sorry for the double post, but I'm completely lost on this one.  Would someone please explain to me why you'd need to carry around a tape measure?

*Pull out measuring tape*

My wife always carries a tape measure or two. And it's a good thing. We always have a laugh over it. She has a hard time judging size and space. It's so cute, when she sees a 10 foot wide entertainment center and suggests it could go on a wall that is no more than 5 feet.  :)

  Hugs, Roxy

My wife is the same way (sorry Patsy). thank God for measuring tapes or I'd be cutting holes in the wall.
Hugs as always.

My SO is the exact opposite, I am usually on key when I see something that I like, and I know where I would like it to live in our house. He always argues up, down, and sideways that there is NO way it will ever fit anywhere in our house. So, I force him to buy it under the condition that if it doesn't fit it can go back to the store. We never take anything back.  :P

I do (usually) accept my victory quietly and graciously. Sometimes I will poke fun though, as we are going to sleep I will say, "Babe, doesn't that new dresser look [g]great[/i] against that wall?" He usually just grunts and rolls over. Hahahahaha
