Title: Books for parents of transgendered children
Post by: Robert F. on October 25, 2010, 02:54:11 PM
I had a talk with my mom today about therapists, hormones, and hormone blockers. She said I really don't need to see a therapist right now, because I'm not depressed or acting out or anything like that. She said we can see a therapist next summer about starting me on hormone blockers, and talking about starting T (even though I'd prefer to start T sooner, just in case it actually can help me grow a bit more). She said that she'd like for me to find her some books, though, so she can read up on the "protocol" for children. Are there any really good books on transgendered children, specifically for parents of transgendered teens?

I'm reading a book right now called Transparent: Love, Family and Living the T with Transgendered Teenagers.  It tells the stories of some students from a school for trans kids, most of them coming there after getting kicked out of their homes.  It's mostly about MTFs but there's some FTM stuff in it too.

Another one I recommend is Becoming a Visible Man, an autobiography by a post op transman.  It's not as much about raising trans children, but your mom could still learn a lot from it.

True Selves is usually highly recommended.  I just put in a request for it at the local library.

By far the best book I could recommend for a parent or anyone for that matter.
This book really helped my mom a lot.

I would also say this is the best book I could recomend. Many people in my family read this book and I noticed a big difference/better understanding from them afterwards.

My dad read 3 books that helped him out more than I could even explain. They were the transgender child, as nature made him, & true selves.
