Title: Standing
Post by: A on October 28, 2010, 08:13:51 PM
I've always wondered what to do with my hands while standing. For example, when I wait for the bus or when I discuss with someone.

It's not a problem if I have something with me (purse, ring binder, bag...) as I can just hold onto it, but otherwise I'm always confused, and it's getting annoying. If I let them hang down, I look like a baboon (even when I'm trying to extend my arms, my elbow is still folded quite a bit) and it's uncomfortable AND masculine-looking. If I force them to be somewhat straight, I look stressed and angry. If I cross them, I look angry (and I don't like doing this much). If I put them in my pockets, I feel too masculine (it's a fact that men put their hands in their pockets more). If I make my elbows touch my waist and let the rest hang down, it's kinda comfortable but it doesn't look natural and looks like I'm forcing myself to look like a princess or whatever.

I know it appears to be a ridiculous problem, but it really, really annoys me. Any tips ?

I have the same concerns. I have been watching Genetic female and males. Males have only a few different positions whereas female have numerous. It's like there hands and arms are weightless they can hold then in any position and  they still look so comfortable . Males have to find a place to stick their long arms and large hands. And you right unless you are a great looking sporty girl, keep your hand out of your pockets.

I should observe people more... But it's hard to do so without feeling like (or looking like) a pervert or someone who sticks her nose in everything...

I have a tendency to hook my thumbs in my belt-loops if I don't have something to hold onto.  Crossing your arms loosely, clasping  your hands in front of you or behind you, resting your hands on your hips, etc. also happen.

It also depends on what you wear.  If you wear a skirt, loosely holding it (if it's a fabric skirt) in your fingers might be fine, too--I've done it because my fingers naturally want to curl around things.

Resting your hand on your hips is good, just remember thumbs forward.

There is not a better way to show off broad shoulder then to clasp your hands behind your back.

And hands clasp in front , if you have big hand your lumping them together in a bigger mass and showing them off.

Haha, thank you for assuming I could actually wear a skirt (ew, I want to so much) ; made me feel good.

And what do you mean by "resting your hands on your hips" ? I'm not sure I get it.

Lukas : You're a guy, so I feel I should ask : are you trying to tell me what to do, or what not to do ? I'm not sure (absolutely no insult meant).

I'm just giving tips of what you can do. =)

Like, when I rest my hands lightly on my hips (in girl mode) I sort of crook the elbows and my palms are generally on my hips just resting there.

@ Erocse:  I think clasping the hands in front (loosely twining the fingers together and relaxing) makes hands look dainty and gentle, but that might just be me.

I failed to get the picture in my head of any of those positions. Can you try to describe it using simple verbs, or draw me something ?

I can try, lol.  I bend my elbows slightly and rest my palms on my hips, thumbs a little bit forward.

If that doesn't work, I'll try and take a picture in the morning.

I don't think I quite get it. I look like I'm trying to push my genitals forward doing this.

Stand straight up , feet spread apart, chest out. Now open your hands place each one on your waist resting on the top of your hip bone, fingers forward. Now you look like Superman.

Now put your feet together , slightly push your pelvis forward place your hands in the same place except thumbs forward. Now your a cutie.

I'll take a picture, then.  (And that is the oddest mental image ever, lol.)

Or what Erocse said.

Erocse: Hm, doesn't feel very natural. I don't know about the look since my co-tenant is currently too near to the mirror (need to come out to her this weekend ; I'll need to at some point even if I don't trust her all that much).

This time I feel like I'm trying to push my back forward, or posing for a magazine. Maybe I just don't get it.

Lukas : I laughed too.

Think about where your elbows are while this is happening. Also keep in mind if your shoulders are tense or relaxed. Guys in general will have their elbows out away from the body and upper body is tense. Girls will have the elbows in close to the body and upper body is relaxed. This will dictate where your hands are located. I keep my hands together and clasped when I am standing most of the time. Or I will hook a thumb in my pockets and not worry about it.
It's kind of the same with the knees and legs. Guys keep the knees out away from the center and girls keep them together. Guys will try to take up lots of space and girls will try to take up less space.

Go to a busy mall with a friend, sit at a table in the food court (preferably with food or a drink) and watch people standing in line for food. If you glance around and don't stare, you probably won't look out of place.

My wife and I liked to find a bench at Disneyland and people-watch. Most people are so busy going about their business they don't notice, or don't care. Just don't point and make comments! ;-)

Hm. And what if I have no friends ?

-Make some.

And if I've trouble making friends ?

I'm not trying to make you feel bad here, but I feel doing this alone would enhance the perverted feeling/look.

I'm not really sure how to answer this, as it's not something I give a great deal of conscious thought to. So I'll just explain some of the things I do. I'll sometimes grasp a wrist  with the opposite hand, or move the hand down slightly and lay one hand over the other with just the finger tips curled around to grasp the hand underneath. I do also stand with my arms crossed, the trick I find is to ensure my arms are relaxed - this prevents the 'angry look' you describe. Another thing I do is stand with my hands behind me with just one finger grasped in the other hand.

A first of all you're female so of course you are allowed to stare at everyone to check out their looks/clothes/body/desirability!   :D

for standing without a bag or anything just bring right hand under left elbow and use left hand to twiddle your earrings/necklace/hair/top button etc - or do opposite hands. do this while putting all weight on one foot and moving other slightly out to the side and you'll score 100% female.
we used to have a very glamorous secretary who always struck this pose while talking to one of the male managers and everyone was convinced they were having an affair.

It just goes to show how little I think about this, in reading this I realised that I do this sometimes too.

I see women doing this alot. Like, playing with an earring or a lock of hair, with their other hand lightly touching their elbow. Good for when you're having a conversation and it's your turn to listen.

Other than that, I dunno :x
