Title: Multiple Consults
Post by: Kaelleria on November 12, 2010, 03:00:55 PM
So I was all excited about McGinn and wasn't really looking into other surgeons. I contacted her office and sent in the intake form and waited. And waited. And waited. 2 1/2 weeks later I finally heard back and now have a consult with McGinn on February 10th. During the 2 week period of no communication, it go me thinking... What happens if the same thing occurs during aftercare? It'd be kind of scary to not be able to get in touch with Mcginn or her office.

In addition to that, my parents aren't exactly comfortable with me only getting opinions from one doctor. One thing you need to understand about my parents and I is that we have a very good relationship at this point and are very close. After getting past the initial 3 years of hell and misery, they've really come around and are really important to me. They're also both in the medical field, my dad being a doctor and my mom a nurse, so I do actually sort of respect their opinions on this sort of thing, so I don't want to hear any "screw you parents, this is your life" kind of talk in response to this. My mother is going to be traveling with me to any consults I have and to wherever I eventually decide to have surgery at, so I do want her on board with all of this.

With all this in mind, I decided to extend some feelers to Dr. Brassard's staff. He is another doctor I've got high on my list. Within 30 minutes of me sending out my initial email to his office, I had a response and now have an opportunity to meet with him or his staff before making a final decision on a surgeon.

If I look at the pros and cons of either surgeon neither really stands out... Both use similar techniques from what i'm told. Mcginn is trans herself and knows what we've gone through. Brassard has been practicing longer. An IRL friend used Mcginn and is very happy. The after care residence type thing with Brassard seems interesting and I've gotten better response time with his staff than Mcginn's.

Basically at the moment they're almost a dead heat in my mind, with Brassard now pulling slightly ahead due to the whole response time thing, so I'm probably going to end up going to Montreal for a consult with him as well. Not only will it provide my parents with some peace of mind, but it will probably come down to the consults on the final decision. Whoever I'm more comfortable with will probably end up being my choice...

Is this normal? My brain has been going around in circles for like the last week...

Hi, I had my surgery with Brassard in September and am extremely pleased with my results, my stay and the professionalism of the staff.  The aftercare at the residence and at home are excellent.  I've had to contact the staff about some concerns twice and each time I was responded to promptly, like within the hour.  You also have the benefit of calling any time of day as there is always someone on staff at the residence.  After you return home, the staff will contact you each month for up to four months to follow up with your progress.  Also, Dr. Brassard is an extremely kind, caring and very professional surgeon who genuinely cares about his patients.
