Title: Stopping HRT for FFS
Post by: jennajane on November 16, 2010, 12:56:06 PM
I am wondering what is the general consensus these days about stopping HRT for FFS.  I have heard several accounts recently of girls that didn't stop for surgery and the risks are possibly greater by stopping than by not.  I am having a chat tomorrow with Dr. Z and was going to see what his thoughts are on the matter, and was hoping some others have some experience with this or have some solid research into the benefits of stopping or not stopping.

Thanks,
Jenna

I've had seven surgeries in last 2.5 years and the recommendations are always to stop HRT a few weeks before but for my last three surgeries I only stopped the couple of days before and on day of surgery and noticed no ill effects.
studying the awful physical condition of lots of people who get various surgeries I have to say that any reasonaly fit and healthy person doesn't really need to stop HRT for more than a couple of days before surgery.
Last night on telly was a program about cosmetic surgery on both ordinary men and women and they got the awful face swellings and bruisings so basically FFS is pretty tough but the risks of HRT may be so rare as to be ignored.

When I asked that question to Dr Ousterhout, he answered that stopping hormones was not necessary. I went through FFS without stopping, had my injections normally during early recovery in Cocoon House, without absolutely no issue whatsoever.

When you think about it, why wouldn't be ok ? Do genetic girls remove their ovaries before a surgery ?  ;D

Though I was given an anti-coagulant when I had my labaiaplasty in Aug.... so not sure maself at the double-speak outcome...

I think this issue will remain controversial, with many Dr's saying stop and some saying no worries...?

Though all the medics I've had work with have requested stops of all meds... unless critical for well-being...  ???

Just a quick update.  I did follow my surgeons recommendations and stopped my HRT a week before surgery and 5 days after.  This question generated a lot of discussion on the yahoo ffs-support group too.  I had a forehead reduction, rhinoplasty and lip lift last tuesday and everything has turned out great.  I am past the major swelling stages and have started the ultra painful "massages" to keep the swelling away from the center of my face.

happy holidays,
Jenna

I've considered staying on until the last week before but I know my surgeon does blood tests etc so he might notice and might cancel surgery for it. Sucks I'm not looking forward to stopping.. just taking my hormones a little bit late has me with the shakes and feeling ->-bleeped-<-ty :-/
