Title: WARNING Negative Side Effect From Hormone Replacement Therapy
Post by: erocse on November 19, 2010, 07:55:59 AM
Sorry I don't mean to be so negative, But I just have to vent a little here. Everybody is always talking about all the wonderful results they have had from hrt . No one ever mentions the adverse side effects.

Like most of you I have experienced the typical changes. Breast development, weight redistribution, softening of the skin, etc and an all together better feeling about myself, a feeling of tranquility and happiness. With those changes came some unexpected ones too. I have developed wrinkles on my face. Well not all over just in two particular spots. I now have a deep creases on each side of my mouth. It's odd because with hrt the overall condition of my skin has greatly improved , it is much softer. But to be honest I know that the newly formed creases are not directly related to hrt. It is because hrt does cause me to constantly smile :) and in turn the smile is what's causing the creases on each side of my mouth. I believe some refer to them as "smile lines"  :) So I have two choices here, one discontinue hrt or quite smiling so darn much !!! :)

Hugs and a big smile, Erocse :)

Lets not be overly dramatic here, lines on the side of your mouth are not that big of a deal.

If you want to talk about dangers, talk about clots and things like that, dangers that using a doctor can help watch for.

You may also develop lines around your eyes.  :(

They can be distracting, but I think they are called laugh lines. :D  Which I have found happens a lot more now too.

Well I was developing them abit at first anyway but I have noticed an increase I suppose it's difficult to tell if it was a natural progression or not I unfortunately appear to just age young lol. This isn't even getting onto my gray hair haha.

I refer to the wrinkles as my {( Parentheses )} It's not suprising Estrogen thins the skin it would make wrinkles more likley.

I am no doctor, but perhaps I will investigate the effects of Vitamin C on the skin. C = Collagen, which was a component of the skin if I remember right...Perhaps slightly higher dosages (1000mg/day) may help. Of course, don't take my word for it.

One of the problems of vitimin suppliments is there appears to be two camps. One that dismisses or opposes, the other that preachs the virtue.

Vitimin suppliments can produce beneficial effects, but should never be taken continuously.

I recall a study in the 80s, I believe it was at a Californian university, where it was discovered that the human body tends to become dependant upon large doses of vitimin C, taken for extended periods. The effects of withdrawal were symptoms associated with severe deficiency.

B vitimins can produce some good results, B3 in particular, can have a good effect on some types of mood problems. But for some people, b vitimins can create kidney inflamation.

I'm sorry I can't produce any links. This and other information comes from my days of studying.

If you do try these suppliments, do so for a week, then rest for two. Also, any discomfort in the lower back, or any other parts of your body, stop. Drink a load of water.

Thanks for the "warning", Erocse - I'll be sure to watch for it, lol!  Thing is, I already smile a LOT more just from being Me (dressed), which is WAY too seldom so far.  I get "the letter" week after next...

Besides those serious side-effects of HRT already mentioned, I've found that it is much harder to keep my mouth shut.  This is something not mentioned in the medical literature and can be a problem to be careful of.  Sometimes I think that my friends miss the old, quiet *him* instead of the constantly chatty Kate. ::)

Very funny, Ecrose.  And yes I can definitely relate.

FWIW, the crow's feet around my eyes have been greatly reduced after starting on E.

Stop taking it AT ONCE! The SOC clearly state that you have to be MISERABLE AT ALL TIMES! You're giving trans people everywhere a bad name with this happiness of yours!

After looking it up a little, taking extremely high doses (over the ceiling of 2g [2,000mg] per day) every day for a while can cause a "rebound scurvy" if suddenly stopped. I'd never suggest someone to take more of a vitamin than sources recommend though! 1,000mg a day supplementation is my absolute max!

Anywho, yes, try them for a week and if you notice something weird...Stop and drink some quality H2O.

Sutara.

I understand the reports.

However, my point is that treating these with common sense and some precaution is more likely to produce beneficial results and less likely to cause possible harm

I never, personally, get flu, but I do get colds every winter. After the initial cold has gone, I treat the remaining symproms with high dose of Vitamin C each night for about 5 days, Take a break for a week then another daily high dose for 5 days. Clears it up better than any cough medicine.

I suggest it it a mistake to put yourself onto routine doses of any medicine. Far better to look at your diet, lifestyle and the amount of fresh air you get.

It can also cause you to develop strange tastes in clothing.

Honestly!  You'll start to wear clothes that are cleaned and pressed!  Also colors will become almost impossible to mix inappropriately, no more fall with summer colors.  Hell, you'll even learn what that means!!!  And say goodbye to that flannel shirt...

I have had fashion meltdowns getting dressed in the morning for work and be as much as a half an hour late because I'll look at myself in the mirror and strip it all off and start pulling clothes from the closet.

Honestly!  No one ever told me either!

Yeah, and the smile lines came with the territory too...

We "women of a certain age" can, and do, develop individual side-effects and propensities from HRT.  Mine is a touch of cellulite ... a heretofore unthinkable condition before HRT.  Darn!  Of course, I've been junking out WAAY more than I did in guy mode ...  ;) ... hee hee!

Get it while you can, baby!
