Title: Transgender Day of Remembrance ~ What are you doing?
Post by: Miniar on November 20, 2010, 10:57:46 AM
Today is the transgender day of remembrance, and so there are events taking place in many locations 'round the world.
In Reyjavík Iceland, they're right now, down at the city "pond", floating candles and reading the names of those who lost their life to hate and violence just this year.

In a couple of hours, I'll be making my way down to the town center, a circular "square" down in the heart of this town, where I'll be standing with the rest of the local GLBT group and I'll be giving a short "talk" thing, and then we'll take turn reading out all the names, dates, ages, locations, and cause of death, lighting some candles, and so on..
Both these events were set up on FB. The Reykjavík event had 16 attending and 7 maybe attending, and ours has 15 attending and 39 maybe attending, so I'm hoping to see maybe 20 people there.
20 people may not seem like a "lot" but this is a town of just 18.000 people, most of them only 'round for school.

Obviously, I'm having a whole host of nerves over this. I'm not a good speaker, and I'm constantly thinking I've lost it since I started putting myself forward like this.

Anyway... 'nuff 'bout what we're up to..

What are you up to?

I did some reading on the TDoR page and posted the link into my blog and my facebook and tell people about it. Hopefully it will raise awareness.

A city 3 hours from me has having a meeting about it, but I can't attend because it's too far.  I just posted links and let everyone know and that's about all I can do because of school.

Our state held its first ever TDOR vigil today, although it was an hour and a half drive each way, I attended. We all held candles, and tried our best to keep them from blowing out in the wind. Many of us chose to receive a piece of paper and each read the name aloud. Extremely moving! I don't think there was a dry eye by the end.
