Title: how long does the puffy face stage last?
Post by: Elijah3291 on November 29, 2010, 11:06:33 PM
I'm on T and my face is starting to 'retain water' just kinda puffy and ive got a gross double chin too lol (not huge, but still)

how long does this part last? and is there anyway to make it finish faster?

I'm not sure as I never went through it.  However a good rule to reduce water retention is to reduce your sodium intake.  Most pre-packaged convenience foods have a very high sodium content.  Just dropping those and eating fresh fruits and vegetables can make a big difference.

Also try drinking as much water as possible to lose excess water.  It will encourage your body to stop retaining if it knows there is a study supply coming.

Mine was around 5 months on T and it only really lasted a month or so. I think I was quite lucky :)

Half a year for me.

It started going away around my 6 month mark.
I also gained about 20 pounds at the beginning of my medical transition. I didn't really notice it at first, but the weight started to add up. I'm sure that made my face look extra puffy. I started putting a concentrated effort into losing the weight around my 4 month mark. I lost the 20s by 8 months!

I think it went away at around 6/7 months, but I only had it for a couple of months overall.

My puffy face started at about month 4 and went away at about 1 year/13 months or so. I think I was one of the unlucky ones!

I wonder if the length of the puffy face stage on T can be predicted by whether or not you got a puffy face during your first (F) puberty and, if so, how long it lasted.

Honestly, the puffy face stage is something that scares me about T.  My F puberty gave me a puffy face that lasted about 5 years.  I fear it could be worse or last longer with T.

I'm not sure when puffy face "started" officially because I was a little over weight when I started T. Since starting I have lost nearly 30 pounds. However, I'm 9 months on T and I think my face looks fatter or puffier than it did when I started. Hopefully soon my face will catch up and I can shake this double chin... it's driving me crazy

Mine started probably about 3-4 months on T and went away a few months later but it was pretty gradual.

It won't last as long. I was the same during my first puberty, and this lasted for much less time. T will eat up the adipose layering of fat in your face. Once you stop retaining water so much, the puffiness will reduce drastically, leaving your face thinner than it was before.

To illustrate my point because OH JESUS MY FACE WAS HUGE.

I lied, AndroGel 7 Months (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gLV4Ae2nkOI#)

@ 7 mos. vs

19 mo. AndroGel Update (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dWBcHJN_S9U#)

19 mos.

You can just see from the still shots the difference.

@Elijah: I spent a lot of my childhood in England and Europe, and learned English from my extended family, most of whom learned their English somewhere in the UK. So I sound funny.

Glad you found them useful. Your face really will change so much.

I didn't even know that was a possible side effect.

Me neither, and I know quite a few FTMs IRL. I really have to get out more.

I'm 10 months in and at about 8 or 9 months it started to calm down. Now my face looks as puffy as it was before T... which is not  very much at all!

if it's due to water retention...best to drink more water than usual and diuretics (e.g. coffee, tea).

It's not something you can avoid. If it happens, it's genetics, and you just wait it out. Drinking excessive amounts of tea and coffee put a strain on your kidneys. Considering that T already puts a strain on your liver and kidneys, this is not very sound advice.
