RALEIGH -- Even in prison, Dedric McDaniels could get the relaxer he needs to make his long hair straight and feminine.
Since he was 11, the New Bern native has thought of himself as transgender, a girl trapped in a male body. Now 35, McDaniels would be easy to mistake for a woman, especially when poured into a pair of his skinny jeans.
That made him a target for unwanted attention during the nearly six years he served in North Carolina's prison system for a drug conviction. In prison after prison, McDaniels said, he was harassed and assaulted by other inmates seeking sex.
Would be nice if her preferred name and gender identity were respected. But at least the article's sympathetic and seems to make an effort to be true to her account.
My feelings as well kryil.
The Superintendant and the Sherriff's department acted when presented with the evidence, which is credit to them. If they had been as corrupt as this officer, they could have easily disposed of this evidnce.
But this is yet again, another example of too much power. Without that evidence, Campbel would have denied it all.
Granted, prisoners are notorious for making false claims about officers. The prisoners don't generally, accept their crimes. They are a difficult group to deal with.
Equally, with welfare staff, another, possibly related group, who frequently have too much power, the excuse is the complaient is looking for compensation.
this is something that should not happen to anyone...
McDaniels states that he is homosexual, nowhere does it say transsexual. It does mention the girl in a boys body bit but, when he self identifies as he, you can't blame the author.
"McDaniels, who describes himself as a "flamboyant homosexual."
"Just because I'm a convict, just because I'm a homosexual, doesn't mean I deserve to be assaulted,"
They arn't trans as far as I can see.
