I would like to first say thank you for serving our country :)
Second thing is theirs no such thing as a stupid question... maybe stupid answers , but never stupid question.

To answer to your question I'm not sure if they accept transgenders. For the longest time they discharged or rejected gays.. If I'm not mistaken they have been recently accepted on the Don't ask don't tell act. Unfortunately Transgenders in the eyes of the uneducated are mentally unstable. Yeah they think were nuts with a penis envy.

I fear that it's going to take years... maybe a decade if not more for the community to finally accept transsexuals and transgenders like ourselves.

I bet your ass if our country was in a mandatory draft that we all would be accepted as a whole. For now we are discriminated against by our very own government that were trying to serve.

While it may be that the above is true the critical problems from a military point of view are a) under what standard are they to be judges, as the physical qualifications for men and women are different, and b) pretty much all people who require 'special medication' are excluded because it's too hard to make sure that they get it when they are overseas.

Just wanted to second Mathews thank you for serving our country

I don't think they will allow you to join if they know you are transgender. If you have been on hormones for a while and it is obvious then probably not :( Although after the repealing of don't ask don't tell it might be possible.

I know a guy personally who is on T. He started in August/September. He joined the Army and ships out January 24th. I asked him about the whole T situation and he told me this: I had a friend ask the recruiters for me before and they said as long as you were off before you had to get checked, they'd take you.

Also do note that you'd be going in as female. Unless you were born male, then there is no way around that. You might be rejected as well if you were indeed diagnosed with GID or if you've had GRS and are trying to go in as male. I'm sure you know that they do a medical check and what not. That's about as much insight as I can offer though.

While I had a dream from early childhood to even this day of being a Marine like my father, I know that it'll never happen in the only way that I ever really imagined because I was unfortunately born female. I do not feel as if my dream could really be my dream if I have to suffer through it as a woman.

Not only that they won't even allow people with flat feet.

I know this will sound unpatriotic and I'll get flamed for it but here's my stance on it. If my government won't even nationally protect my rights, shuns me and doesn't care about me because I'm trans then I don't want to serve for it.

I've been told  that the pre-induction physical is about as invasive (as well as pretty public) as any you're ever going to get.

Radar: I hope that was just said jokingly. They do allow people in with flat feet now, but it depends on how pronounced it is and whether the doctors accept it.

Here's a link to the Standards of Fitness: http://www.benning.army.mil/infantry/199th/ISTD/download/R40_501%5B1%5D.pdf (http://www.benning.army.mil/infantry/199th/ISTD/download/R40_501%5B1%5D.pdf)

This is the technical section: AR 40-501: Standards of Medical Fitness, para. 2-10 (b) (4)

It is on page 10 of the PDF, beginning at the bottom of the left column.

Tekla: Yeah, that's what I understand as well. This is why you couldn't get in even stealth wise because there really is no stealth anything to whole ordeal.

OP: Perhaps that link there would also answer any other questions you have. It is quite thorough.

It's hard to be stealth standing around naked with a bunch of other people.

I totally agree with this. They kick out people who are LGBT, so why the hell would I want to go in?

Because you want to protect American Corporate interests, which is really important because as it turns out they don't let their kids do it.

Ah, my mistake. I was going off what someone told me. She was denied going into the military because she had flat feet. That's what they told her anyway. I'm glad they repealed that (unless it's too pronounced).

Well, besides the flat foot issue in http://www.benning.army.mil/infantry/199th/ISTD/download/R40_501%5B1%5D.pdf (http://www.benning.army.mil/infantry/199th/ISTD/download/R40_501%5B1%5D.pdf)

Quote from: Army Standards of Medical Fitness2–33. Psychosexual conditions
The causes for rejection are as follows:
a. Transsexualism and other gender identity disorders.
b. Exhibitionism, transvestism, voyeurism and other paraphilias.

This conversation always reminds me of the bit in Alice's' Restaurantwhere Arlo goes:
"Sargeant, you got a lot a damn gall to ask me if I've rehabilitated myself, I mean, I mean, I mean that just, I'm sittin' here on the bench, I mean I'm sittin here on the Group W bench 'cause you want to know if I'm moral enough join the army, burn women, kids, houses and villages after bein' a litterbug."

Renate, that PDF was very interesting. The military sure does exclude alot of people because of different health/physical issues. The Genitalia section is interesting too.

Blood work is almost always for drugs (illegal) and not much else.

There are waivers for just about everything, including some categories that are considered "automatic waviers" (age is one I know of for sure) becuase of the needs of the military.

The military, because of the nature of the business, is looking not just for good physical specimens, they are looking for the best physical specimens.  They are just trying to make sure your problems don't become their problems, considering the nature of the work, they have enough of their own problems already.

I don't know anyone who was or wanted to be a marine, but I know people who smoked a lot of weed and still got in other branches. So I guess they will turn a blind eye. I guess for the same reasons why my work stopped drug testing, loosing too many people.

I was wondering about the military also. Not all military positions require you to be in extreme physical fitness. There are many positions it would matter what gender you where. For instance the marine band, how does my gender effect my ability to play an instrument. Or if you did mechanics, or became a medical personnel in the military.

I personaly feel this country is extremely intolerant. If this country doesn't what me fine they'll be the ones to miss out. There are several european countries that transexuals can serve and serve openly.

Its antique attitudes about unit cohesiveness.  I mean really, plenty of battle tested vetrans said when it got bad enough they didn't care about anything other then if their foxhole mates could kill the enemy and save their lives.  Yet commanders continue to hid behind unit cohesion as the rational for the ban on anthing but the most heterosexual among us.

Actually the military came out last week and said just the opposite in its own study - not that the 'Pubs are going to listen.

And in the Marine Corp everyone is a Marine first and whatever else second.  So even the flute players in the bands have to be trained for battle.  If you can't make it past that, you don't get in.

Quite true. Every Marine is a rifleman first. I'm sighing dreamily at the thought already. Meh... :/
