The New South Wales Attorney-General says he will raise with his counterparts the issue of legal recognition for ''genderless'' people - who wish to identify as neither male nor female.

John Hatzistergos says the Human Rights Commission recommends that adults should be allowed to have an unspecified sex listed on official documents.

He says a case detailed earlier this year highlighted the difficulties for one Sydney resident - who had gender reassignment surgery and now does not identify as either male or female.

Mr Hatzistergos says it is complex issue that needs to be discussed.
