C-389, the bill to protect Canadian transpeople from discrimination, proceded through another step Wednesday.  The committee report passed the House of Commons with a standing vote of 143-131.  The timetable is to have third reading in March, two hours of debate, and then a final vote.

Holding a report stage vote is "not normal," but this extra step proved not to be an insurmountable barrier.

The bill adds "gender identity" and "gender expression" to the Canadian Human Rights Act's list of prohibited grounds for discrimination.

That will NEVER happen in the US.  EVER.
I respectfully disagree. We are making progress.

Evidenced by:
1. More and more companies and states have adopted anti-discrimination protections. Go onto the HRC corporate equality index for 2011. In the last 10 years, we've seen the percentage of Fortune 500 companies extending internal anti-discrimination policies to Trans people. The % has gone up from 5% to nearly 50%.
2. Younger people do not have the gender prejudices that the Baby boomer and older generation holds. As more of this older population dies off, the more liberally minded young people will take over as voters. Even if they become more moderate or conservative as they age, we will still capture more of their votes.
3. The image in the media of trans people has been improving. Oprah, Dr. Phil and others have featured respectful pieces about trans children and adults. As the public are seeing young children struggling with gender conformity, they are beginning to understand that this is a real condition and not " a choice".

Sure, it might 10 more or 20 more years. We are, however, on the right side of history. Civil rights will continue to march on....

The West is the Best, get here, and we'll do the rest.  Like everything else from fashion to skateboards to mountain bikes, we invent, everyone else follows in due time.  Hell, half of those 'gray' states have so few people that they don't really matter except that they get two morons to stick into the U.S. Senate.

That was Florida - the Beast of the East (we keep Florida around so Cali don't look so nuts) - that pardoned him, he was never arrested out here.  Both of Jim's busts came on the East Coast for showing people his Lizard King.
