Title: Will Be Late For A Shot... Don't Know What To Do
Post by: xAndrewx on December 30, 2010, 08:20:40 PM
So my mom did my last shot but she's going to be out of town until 2 days after I need my next shot. I'm every two weeks so it'll be 16 days between injections. I wish I were once a week and could just do it tomorrow before she leaves. I'm not ready to do my shots on my own and won't be able to afford a doctors visit just to get a shot. Will 2 days late be alright?

Contact your doctor....tell him/her about your situation and he/she will advise you.  I don't think you will have a problem waiting the 2 days but do discuss this with your doctor.

Probably. Mine are a week apart and I've had to do mine a day late because I forgot to do one. I was totally fine. If you're that worried about it, you could always call your endo.  :)

I AM NOT A MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL, but I've delayed one day so I could do my shot on a different day of the week, and I have never had any problems. I've also done a shot a day early for the same reason. I went to a weekly shot because I was feeling a significant mood drop a couple of days before each biweekly shot.

If you got the shot tomorrow, how many days early would that be? If it's only a couple of days, maybe you can have a shot early and then do the next one in exactly two weeks, as usual. The T in your system starts to decrease before the two weeks are out, you know. Hudson's FTM Guide has reliable info about T levels and troughing--you might look it up. Or just call your doctor and ask.

I know you said that you aren't ready to do the shots on your own but you might be making it scarier than it is?  In the beginning I numbed the area with some ice first for about five minutes.  That might have helped but what really did it was knowing that I wanted it bad enough.

Sounds like you do too, so just grab some thigh and stick it in.  Once you get over the hurdle it's much smoother going.

Thanks for the advice guys. :) I think I'll try to get through to my doctor tomorrow but I think since it'll be new years eve I won't be able to talk to her until Monday at the soonest. If it was every week it'd be alright but I'm worried about troughing.

Squirrel- Yeah, I do make it scarier than it is. I tried to do my first shot on my own but every time I got it to my skin I panicked and pulled away so she did it for me. The goal is to eventually get comfortable enough to do them on my own and have my mom do them until I can.

Arch-  Yeah, It'd be 8 days since my last shot so that is what I was considering. I think I'll be talking to my doc about doing shots every 10 days when I see her again. I know one guy who does that.

I know what you mean--I had a nurse do my first six or eight shots...then I did one or two while she watched...after that, I did my own. We do things in our own time.

Sounds like you're going to have to wait until your mother comes back. It's nice that she does it for you, though.

Does your mood drop at all when you're on the thirteenth or fourteenth day? If not, you might not have a problem with that even after sixteen.

Yeah she's pretty awesome like that :) I'm actually only on my 7th day since starting T so I'm not sure if my mood will drop.  :-\ I guess I'll just have to call my doc and if I can't get through then I'll have to wait and find out.

I agree with Squirrel that it's important to learn to do your shots on your own because there will be times when no one's there to do it for you (like your situation). I understand wanting your mother (or someone) there when you start doing it yourself though- just in case.

Have you tried doing the shot in your butt instead of your thigh? I was skeptical at first but prefer the butt over the thighs now. It might be easier for you. The shots aren't the funnest things in the world but are totally worth it.

Yeah I'm a little nervous about doing it there instead but I think that's what I'm going to try next. Only done thigh so far and it didn't hurt barely at all but I did it in the wrong spot so I'm not sure if it would've hurt more if I had done it in the correct spot. Hopefully soon I'll be able to do it on my own.

Are you fully relaxed, Radar? I love doing my shots, and I'm not a masochist. It's only hurt a couple of times. Once it happened when I was startled by my partner's coming home early when he promised he would call first...I tensed up and injected just as the front door opened.

I used to be self-conscious about doing the shots when he was in the house...::)

Yeah, I relax myself. They usually go good but I have nicked a nerve a few times (ouch). I just don't see shots in general as alot of fun. But, it's what we have to do. I remind myself that some diabetics have to do shots everyday and then I realize I don't have much to complain about. I know their shots aren't IM but you get my point. I also see the shots as less of a hassle then the gel.

Radar, I don't want to tell you your business, and we have nerves everywhere, but is it possible that you're injecting a little too low or something?

Heh. I'm probably just doing the kneejerk thing and thinking, "That can't possibly happen to me, can it? He MUST be in the wrong place." Sorry, I do not want to come across as an obnoxious know-it-all. (Not in this post, anyway.;))

Well, I'm doing it in the area the doctor showed me. I think I just have overactive nerves- I have for a long time.

I agree that you should ask your doctor, but my guess is that since it's your first & second injections, you can inject 2 days late without noticing any real difference in mood or otherwise.

Come on, be a man! Do it yourself! lol..jk I understand. I want to switch to shots but I'm so scared to do them myself! :S

Sean: Yeah, I think it might be more of a mental thing of being upset at the thought of being two days late than anything else. You're right it's only my first and second shot so I'll try to contact my doctor but if not I'll wait

Britney: lol yeah I was scared too but really for the T the only part that hurt this shot was that the T was so thick so it stung a little going in. I don't know much about estrogen but good luck if you decide to do them :)

It also is a good reason to learn how to do it yourself for the future, but it sounds like you plan to.

Even though I had done one injection in front of my doctor, I had to do my first injection by myself when I was in a rush, and it wasn't a great experience. I thiink feeling pressured and stressed to be fast made it harder, because the next time, I took my time and was fine.

So for the "just do it yourself and man up" crowd, I disagree. I wouldn't try it alone when you feel stressed about it.

Aww I was just teasing lol. I wouldn't want him to hurt himself or not do it right etc if he's scared.

And andrew thanks I'm gonna talk to my dr at the end of january.

the girl who pierced my ears made one a little too close to edge so when I got fed up of it I held icecubes against earlobe and then shoved a big darning needle through without any pain.  I was surprised at how tough skin is though.
using ice first should make it easy to do own injections if need be but I must admit I turn my head away when nurses draw blood with those thick needles used for that.

I know this is a little old but i thought i'd weigh in. I do my shot once a week and the day sometimes varies between friday/saturday just depending on my schedule. im not a doc or anything but a day or two late every once in a while wont mess you up

Thanks man I went ahead and decided on late so I'm getting my next shot on Saturday. Decided that I'm gonna talk to the doc about every week or every 10 days next time so I won't have to stress next time.
