Priscilla Queen of the Desert — which gives its final Toronto performances this weekend before moving to Broadway — has a bewildering number of producers. By my count, there are at least 10, including David Mirvish and Bette Midler. But none is more of a key player than Allan Scott.

About 10 years ago Scott decided he'd like to create a big stage musical. Casting about for material, he remembered the 1994 Australian movie about three eccentric lip-synch performers (two drag queens and a transsexual) who take a long trip through the outback on a converted school bus to a gig in a remote town. The film won an Oscar for its flamboyant costumes.
