Title: Randi lost the ability to give reputation
Post by: Susan on January 09, 2011, 02:33:54 PM
Randi issued a smite for which the reason given was clearly unsupported in the post. I have transferred that smite to her and removed her ability to give reputation in the future.  That smite was against an administrator, but that was not why this action was taken. If you make a smite on an Admin that is justified no penalties will result, and the administrator would most likely get a serious butt chewing from me too... Staff members are held to a higher standard of behavior on the site, and they know it.

Thanks a lot Susan. If you don't want us to use the 'reputation' feature of Your website You should do away with it. Has it done anything positive at all for anybody? You could have sent me an email concerning this but you did not -you put it in the forum posts where lots of folks will think I have done something for which I need to be punished. I do not appreciate this kind of treatment from you or anyone else.

I'm new to this website...or any other website... so please excuse my ignorance, but exactly what is the purpose of having, or giving, reputations in regards to postings? Do other online websites such as this typically do this?

Hi Atheris, Susan explains the reputation system over in the "site rule and TOS" section. Welcome!

You win valuable prizes.  Just last year I won a pink 'Vette for getting more smites than anyone else that year.  Why, yes, it did come with studded tires.  Why do you ask?

I don't understand why you're getting all up in arms about this. If you look at other threads, you'll find that you aren't being called out. If you're banned or have priveleges taken away, you get posted about.

That explains it, thank you! By the way, how many reputation gold stars are required for a breast augmentation? Is the BA performed by a moderator?

Oh, and I really like your car, WOW!!! What would you need to do in order to fill the tank with gas?  Do I get a smite for asking??? Hope not...I'm really a nice girl!

My smite came from a user that I smited in a conversation I wasn't even involved in.   So I won't be smiting anyone again...smite back sucks.

It would be more helpful - or perhaps helpful period - if you could vote yeah or neh by post, that at least would give people some clue, although I don't know to what.  I'd read all the posts anyway.  I like wrong opinions just as much as correct ones.  I like reading what people say.  And that it had a ton of ups or downs wouldn't matter to me in the least,  I guess in that sense what other people think (about what other people write) ain't that big a deal to me I guess.

The Rep system reminds me of an old saying...

When in Rome... Avoid the Romans   Or something like that... Oh, I know what it was...

If sense was so common... everyone would have it

This whole thing started when I gave someone a smite after I got my feelings hurt because of a post she made in the 'unwanted advice' thread. A couple of days later someone else posted an email about it and thinking about it again, I took it back from her. I was told that thread was meant to be a joke-sorry I missed it. What she said was true but it still hurt. Susan said that was not why the smite was given to me. It also hurt my feelings when I saw this post by Susan.
Right now it feels like nobody cares what I feel. I struggle too and life is not a picnic at my house.

I stoped giving smites and apluads a few weeks ago.
The system only serves to cause hurt feelings.

The system only serves to cause hurt feelings.

I pretty much thought that was the main reason for it.

I'm sure it's hurt more people than it's helped.

I feel that the rep system has been grossly misused to the point that it has become rediculous

As I see you tow options: do not read your reputation, or move to to other forums

Or do what I do and ignore it. It is not compulsory. My understanding was that it came with the software upgrade, so it's there.

I wouldn't grieve if the whole reputation system were to vanish overnight. :P

I think it is fine the way it is. For 95% of the people who use and pay attention to it. The smites that are tossed out there are just, if not more, an indication of who the smiter is and where they stand in life. Go and look at some of the reasons people have smited one another. A large enough share is spiteful thinking. It says loads about the level of maturity that was going on at the time. I'm not excluding myself, I made a rash smite that I later was very sorry for giving. I was lucky that I was able to have it removed, as it was uncalled for. Go and have a peek at some of the reasons smites are given out to others.

At the same time, note the applauds and read the reasons why. I find them insightful of who that person is, and at times the level of respect they deserve.

There are a small percentage of smites and applauds that are given out as though they are part of a buddy system, or little clique. So what. you find out how that works with some people here, too.

Overall, it's an indication of how your peers react to anyones given attitude at the time. If you like or object to any you have given or received, you are not restricted from discussing it. If people are using the smite button at a level of just spitefullness it should be brought up, it goes beyond the reasons for the system. Use it like an adult and you will be treated as such 99.9% of the time. use it like a little slap system and it becomes very obvious who you are and the level of maturity your working at.
I find it useful when I wonder enough about where someone is coming from, why they make the statements they do at times. It's a useful tool for deciding if you even care to engage in conversation with someone, or even your response to them. I think that its not used enough at times and at other times you realize that you could be dealing with someone thats just pissed at the world.

It's an indicator of attitude more than anything else. It can show levels of respect as well as levels of disrespect. Use it in an immature way, it shows when you do. Use it in the way it should be used (with respect) and it shows the maturity that this forum should operate at. It's above the bull->-bleeped-<- that is so common when your online at some places. Use it as a tool of revenge, you'll be treated with the respect you deserve. Use it as a tool of honor, thoughtfulness, with a level of respect that shows you are thinking and it becomes another way of realizing the level of maturity that this forum and most who use it, deserve.

This was the reason given for one of my smites. It still makes me smile.

QuotePosting out of their section in a negative piss on you way.

No, both Florida and New York are tekla Free Zones, particularly Florida.  Actually I rarely travel outside the San Francisco Bay Area as the rest of the US has become far too weird.

Still Cindy you have my thumbs up every single day because I think you're a lovely person :)  I've been going through some mental highs and lows since coming to this final acceptance, I had a brief incarnation here on this board and found it really tough mentally, but you were kind to me and supportive, I love your attittude towards life and I really enjoy reading your posts.  That's why you get my thumbs up every single time I read your posts.

Love,
Sophie (formerly Safiya)
