Chrissie Bates, a transgender woman who lived in downtown Minneapolis, was found murdered in her apartment on Monday in what police are calling a homicide. Police say she appeared to have been stabbed. Details are still sketchy, but CityPages notes that Bates had feared for her safety in her building.

OutFront Minnesota's Anti-Violence Program Director Rebecca Waggoner said they don't have many details at this point but that they are setting up a vigil on Jan. 21 at 6 pm in Bates' neighborhood which is near MCTC. A firm location will be set over the next few days.

I have taken various measures to protect myself. (*AHEM* A legal firearm)  Where I live, by law, you can shoot a person dead if they enter your residence and threaten your life.  However, I wish these precautions weren't needed and one can never truly predict a series of events.  Will this hatred/ignorance ever end?  I doubt it. :'(

It is always even more tragic and disheartening when right after the TDOR more of these cases come rolling in. She like a number of others were murdered in their own apartments. That makes me wonder if they invited the attacker in. Sadly, we often fear the stranger but the psycho could be the one we know and trust. As to protection, I agree. My apartment is rather tactically set up so if I invited someone in and they tried to kill me they would likely get a surprise. Should someone try to break down the door they won't get more than two feet in, trust me. I hope we can get to the bottom of this crime and find out what exactly happened. I'm so sick of this. If trans people aren't already committing suicide, dying from drugs or alcohol, dying from self-medicating and self-surgeries, they are getting murdered. Enough is enough. I am glad that some people (such as the post above mine) are taking steps to protect themselves. We have the right to life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness. We must protect those from others who wish to take them away.

This is sad ... especially since it's in my neck of the woods!

I used to live in rural Iowa and that threat was definitely one of the reasons why I relocated. Thankfully, I am finding support finally down here in Dallas, TX but that threat constantly looms over my thoughts. It truly saddens me that our community is still targeted by hateful people. Someday it would be very nice if we could just choose our path without that fear of death but my hopes are rent asunder with news like this. Chrissie and her friends will be remembered in my mind.  :( :icon_sadblinky: :icon_cry:

My apartment is rather tactically set up...

Odd, mine is set up for entertaining and leisure living...

...I invited someone in and they tried to kill me they would likely get a surprise

... when I invite someone in they tend to get a drink, unless they puff, in which case we head to the deck and catch some rays while we're at it.

Krissy Bates, the first murder victim in Minneapolis this year, was a transgender woman who'd been in town only a few months.

Krissy came from the South. She didn't share much about her past. Some of her neighbors thought she was from Atlanta, others remembered her hometown as New Orleans.

[...]

Three or four times a day, Krissy spoke on the phone with her dear friend Janice Polson, of Closplint, Kentucky. The women had never met--Polson had been introduced to Krissy by her brother, and the women had formed a close bond despite the distance. Until Krissy was murdered, Polson didn't know that her friend had transitioned genders.
